While Fall Quarter hasn't started quite yet, this is the first edition of Tuesday Tips that will reach many of our new faculty members, instructors, and graduate students.
For all of the new folks, welcome to the College of Letters and Science! We're happy to have you here! We publish this newsletter, usually every two weeks, to provide updates on new and changed IT services that are available to you.
Please don't hesitate to reach out via any of the contact methods listed at the bottom of this newsletter for any IT questions!
The start of Fall Quarter is the busiest time of year for many of our clients (you!) and for us. Here are a few quick reminders to help things go smoothly:
If you ordered a computer or other equipment but have not yet picked it up from the service desk or arranged an installation appointment, please do so as soon as possible. Our available appointments before the start of the quarter are filling fast.
While the situation has improved, we are still seeing supply chain delays from our vendors on computers, printers, docking stations, and other computer equipment. With two weeks before the start of instruction, orders placed now are unlikely to arrive before classes start.
Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology (SITT)
The Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology (SITT) returns for 2022 on September 8 and 9, and we would love for you and your faculty colleagues to join us! We meet via Zoom on the mornings of September 8 and 9 for live presentations by UC Davis faculty. You are invited now to browse the on-demand faculty talks and interviews on the SITT website.
To join live SITT events, please register for each Zoom session on the live talks portion of the SITT 2022 website where you will find an agenda of the planned speakers and topics.

DataLab has two intro computing workshop series coming up and there are a few spots still available! Graduate students and postdocs have priority registration, but staff can attend space permitting:
LS IT bids a fond farewell to Kevin Vellanoweth, who has been a member of the LS IT team since 2019. Among Kevin's many accomplishments during his time with LS IT was setting up our systems for managing Macs, which have revolutionized our ability to support the Apple ecosystem both within LS IT and across UC Davis. Kevin is moving to a position in the School of Veterinary Medicine. We are currently recruiting to fill Kevin's position.
Network4 Upgrade Process
As covered in a previous edition, the campus is upgrading the connections between individual campus buildings and the core campus network. The cutover for each building happens from 5PM to 2AM on the scheduled day to minimize disruption, and the goal is to complete all cutovers before the start of fall courses. Here is the schedule for the remaining LS buildings:
We continue to experience the effects of global supply chain delays on monitors, printers, some computers, and other equipment. In many cases, items we order today are not shipping for several weeks—and sometimes longer. Even when vendors provide an estimated ship date, we are frequently seeing those dates slip by weeks or months. Please plan ahead by ordering as soon as possible, and please be patient. Orders placed now will likely not be received by the start of Fall Quarter.
