Last Chance to View the Summer Exhibits

Our summer exhibitions will be closing at the end of day on Sunday, September 4th. The museum will be closed on Monday, September 5th as usual for Labor Day

Our exhibitions this season examine and explore our relationship with the environment, and how we can make a difference. Learn more about our flagship exhibitions below.

Environmental Impact II
Environmental Impact II, seeks to heighten public attention and concern about environmental degradation as well as the unintended consequences of human interaction with nature and neglect. From global warming and its impact on the planet, to extreme weather cycles resulting in intense hurricanes, drought and wildfires, Environmental Impact II asks viewers to think about the actions they can take to sustain, support, and protect our globally connected world.
The Lure of Niagara
It is believed that more prints were made of Niagara Falls before the twentieth century than of any other specific place, and The Charles Rand Penney Collection of Historical Niagara Falls Prints is the largest collection of this genre. Viewing so many images of one subject together, we can gain new insights not only about the location itself, but also about the manner in which the scene has been depicted, emerging with a deeper understanding of the history of Niagara Falls.

Dennos Receives Multiple Grant Awards

Thanks to the work of director Craig Hadley, DMC has been awarded a total of over $80,000 of grant awards for upgrades to the lighting in the galleries and for collections care.

According to a 2010 General Conservation Assessment—along with the museum's first Museum Assessment Program report in 2020—the DMC was strongly encouraged to expand storage for care and access to our collections.

New equipment will enable the DMC to alleviate overcrowding, and provide dedicated space for critical collections management tasks.

The collection directly supports teaching and programming initiatives at Northwestern Michigan College, along with exhibitions and programs for over 62,000 general visitors each year. More information about each grant award can be found below.

National Endowment of the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant
Grant monies will fund new flat file storage at DMC. This year, the NEH Preservation Assistance Grants will help 65 small and mid-sized museums, libraries, historical societies, and archival repositories improve their ability to care for significant humanities collections.

FY2022 Inspire! Grants for Small Museums
DMC was awarded money from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to purchase five new compact shelving units for object storage. The units will help staff reorganize storage space to optimize collections care for approximately 165 objects from Michigan and the Midwest.

Frankenthaler Climate Initiative of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation
DMC is honored to have been selected to receive an award the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative, a grant-making program established by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners and RMI to catalyze climate change action in the visual arts. Funds will be used to purchase of 111 new LSI model 2044 LED track lighting fixtures. These units will replace the original track lighting fixtures from 1991 which were not designed for LED conversion. This project will result in an electrical savings of 3,163.5 kWh per year along with an anticipated emissions savings of 2,689 pounds of CO2 per year.
