Miller Beach Arts & Creative District

Putting Art in the Heart of Lake Street
Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts!

Become one of the Miller 500! It’s an exciting time to live in the Miller Beach community of Gary, Indiana. In 2022 we saw new signage at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts (MJG), public art sculpture, Quilts, ISH, the launch of Miller Community Theatre and soon an extraordinary exhibit by David Lee Csicsko. In October look for the expanded Painters Printing exhibition and the events surrounding that fascinating process. And then a new and exciting Community Show to close out the season. We rely on grant monies and donations to keep our doors open.

Right now, we are dangerously close to shutting the doors to the MJG for good. Fundraising has been difficult and most of the monies raised in the past year have gone to fixing our basement, cleaning our air, lighting up our signs, and installing energy efficient lamps in our gallery. Ideally, we would like to have 40 people write a check for $500 or more. Most people cannot make that size donation. But you can sign up for Miller 500 -- and donate $10 (or more) per month, automatically.

If 500 people out of a community of 11,000 donate $10 per month, we can cover our costs. Your contribution would not be insignificant – when fully realized Miller 500 will provide more than $5,000 per month to cover our hard costs of running a burgeoning 501c3 dedicated to the redevelopment of Lake Street in Gary, Indiana.

As one of the Miller 500 you help pay for gas & electricity, repairs, office supplies, insurance, advertising, staff, and office expenses. Sign up here: Miller500.

We are the masters of our own fate. If any major funder came to our organization and offered to grant us $5,000 per month to cover our operating costs – we’d be over the moon!!! Be part of that major funder – the Community of Miller Beach, Gary Indiana. Please join the Miller500 today!

Get ready for The Csicsko Kid – An Affection for the Calumet Region and the City of Chicago! MBACD is thrilled to announce its next exhibit with internationally known artist David Lee Csicsko. Opening Reception will take place on Friday, September 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. You’ll have a chance to meet David on Friday, October 7 for a special Artist Talk from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Chicago artist David Lee Csicsko grew up in Hammond, Indiana. David spent summers at Miller Beach, West Beach, Wells Street Beach and the Indiana Dunes. He attended Morton Senior High School in Hammond and The Cleveland Institute of Art. After graduating from art school, he started to make small cut out drawings that became illustrations in Chicago Magazine, The Chicago Tribune and ads for Marshall Fields.

The exhibit celebrates David’s affection for the Calumet Region and the City of Chicago, covering early work from the 1980s, including posters, illustrations, personal art, shopping bags, banners and photos of stained-glass windows, and David’s graphics for the Miller Beach Water Safety initiative.

David’s connection to the Miller Beach community includes his cousin Paula Rooney and her husband Tom, who are members of the Miller Beach Water Safety Society. David's artwork is featured on yard signs strategically placed throughout Miller Beach to deliver key messages out about water safety.

Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Sunday 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The show will run through Friday, October 14.

TEDX Gary is Back! Join us Sunday, September 11 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. TEDxGary 2022 is about exploring how failure is an introduction of a successful, winning philosophy in all areas of life. If we take fear of failing out of the equation of contemplation, we strive towards our goals knowing that "do overs" and "try again(s)" are all a part of achievement. Tickets are $20 and cash bar will be available. Purchase your tickets at Eventbrite.com.

Come out for a day of fun and help raise dollars for MBACD at our 7th Annual Golf Outing taking place Monday, September 19 at Innsbrook Country Club.  Sign up for a foursome as an individual; sponsorships are needed as well. If you’re not a golfer that’s OK; join us for dinner and enjoy the musical stylings of Angelo Cicco!  For more information sign up on our WEBSITE or at Eventbrite.com

Miller Garden Club

Before you put away those seersucker suits and sundresses, join the Miller Garden Club for its 1st Annual Classical Chrysanthemum Concerto on Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 pm at the Aquatorium.

This lovely day of live classical performances, food, and of course…flowers will feature Kimberly Jones, Cornelius Johnson and Paul Dykstra, all of Chicago and Miller’s own Linda Murphy and Akilia McCain. Anita Blanton, morning anchor of Fox’s Good Day Chicago, will emcee the event.

Tickets are $30 each and include refreshments and a complimentary glass of wine or beer. This fund-raiser for the Garden Club will help tell the history of Gary’s love affair with the brilliant fall bloom – the Chrysanthemum. Did you know the Gary Parks greenhouse was the site of a major propagation of the colorful plant in years past? Learn all about it and enjoy seeing friends and neighbors at the Aquatorium.

Buy your tickets today at https://bit.ly/223CTickets.

Next Meeting: Annual Election of Board Members takes place at the next regular meeting of the club on Saturday September 17 at 10:00 am at the Aquatorium. We’ll be busy prior to the meeting cleaning up for the Chrysanthemum Concerto, but we will break at 10:00 am to elect new board members (and keep some of the old!) followed by an interesting speaker: Karl Ackerman from Wild Ones, the national group dedicated to native plants. Karl’s garden was featured on the Munster garden walk earlier this summer. He will tell us how to bring native plants into our gardens for health and happiness!

Brats, Bulbs & Beer; Beer, Brats & Bulbs; Brats, Beer & Bulbs: the order doesn’t matter!! Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education

Temporary Closure of Douglas Center Continues

Unfortunately the bridge connecting the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education to its parking lot is still under construction and the crosswalk on Lake Street has not been completed. In addition, preparation for interior renovation of the Douglas Center has required a dumpster to be placed in the small four-car gravel parking lot on the west side of Lake Street, limiting public parking even more. Renovations should be completed by the end of October or sooner.

The Miller Woods Hiking Trail remains open but, as mentioned, parking is very limited..

For more information, please contact the park’s information line at 219-395-1882.
The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located at 100 North Lake Street. Follow them on Facebook or online at DouglasCenter.

Miller Beach Water Safety Social Group

The Miller Beach Water Safety Social Group is asking for your participation in a survey created by Indiana University - Bloomington. The results of the survey have the potential to help scientists answer important questions that might change or improve the way we do things in the future.

The results of this survey will impact our local water safety messaging and spending. Attendants at parking lots at Marquette Park, Lake Street and Wells Street are handing out Water Safety cards to visitors. We want to make sure locals also have an opportunity to participate.

Below is the link to the survey. Please participate. It is important the Miller Beach Water Safety Social Group. We are grateful that IU Bloomington is interested in what is happening here in Gary!
Thank you!

STAY DILIGENT IN WATER SAFETY PRACTICES! Most will continue to go to the beach and swim through September. Bring and wear life jackets! Learn more from Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium and Great Lakes Surf Rescue Projects.  Both organizations have been very helpful to our community!
