Kamloops Pride Parade 2022

It’s here!!! Pride Week 2022 in Kamloops is underway, and the parade is this Sunday, August 28.

Kamloops United Church is registered to participate as marchers and to host a booth in Riverside Park following the parade. Please come out and support KUC and its Affirming Ministry!

KUC is in group B which will muster on St. Paul Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave on the Stuart Wood side of the street.

Marching begins at 11 am so those KUC folks who are marching should aim to meet at 10 am at KUC to get organized with banners and treat bags etc. I'll bring buttons and boas for you to wear with your own colourful clothing! We can walk together over to the mustering area at 10:30.

I am feeling the challenge of engaging with folks after a long time in the pandemic desert, so I hope that many of you will be able to participate on August 28. Bring your family and invite your KUC friends!
In the six years that I have been involved with KUC's Affirming efforts, one of the things I have come to appreciate is the importance and value of "the church" being visibly and audibly public, intentional and explicit about being 2S & LGBTQIA+ Affirming, and celebrating diversity. I've been told and I've overheard many comments about how much it means for folks to see our church supporting and affirming the Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ community.

On behalf of the KUC Affirming Ministry, thanks for supporting Pride!!

Sharing and Caring, Sunday August 28th
at 7:00 PM

Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 7 pm via Zoom

ZOOM LINK

password (if required) is gratitude

Sharing & Caring is loosely based on the UK’s The Listening Café
(thelisteningcafe.co.uk)

During this listening hour, participants will be paired off randomly into Zoom breakout rooms. For the first five minutes, one participant will be “sharing” (even silence is welcomed) while the other “caring” participant will mute themselves and listen without judgment and without offering solutions or trying to fix anything.

At the end of the five-minute mark, the “caring” (listening) party will simply state, “I heard you” and then the roles will reverse for another five minutes. Afterward, we will regroup, assess, and repeat.

“Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25b

A shopper at our BIG SUMMER BLOWOUT SALE had this to say...
Ethan's Artwork for the week
Hello there, my name is Ethan Renfrew. I have been given the honor of exploring Climate Change this summer and showing my thoughts to you through art. Every week or two, you will be presented with an art piece, as well as a portion of research findings as I explore Climate Change and learn more about it. This can be in the form of a fact about Climate change, or a way you can help protect your community or environment from its effects.

This is being done to both bring awareness as well as share some insight into the topic in a way that is both enjoyable and beautiful. I will be asking questions along the way in the eNews about your thoughts, and I hope you will engage with me, as I am excited to learn what you think throughout the Summer.

Artist Statement:
Even though I have already covered the impact climate change has on earth, I wanted to do a piece that reflected how it has an effect on people specifically and why we should show concern. Through the art, I wanted to illustrate the idea that what we do now can affect the future, and that what we do now is important. For the art piece, I wanted to have a visible but somewhat fluid transition between the industrial and sustainable aspects of the picture. For this reason, I chose both charcoal pencils and coloured pencils, as they show a visible difference but have similarities in texture and blend more neatly together.

Research:
The largest concern with regard to climate change has to be how it could change our way of life in the future. First, there is extreme weather caused by climate change which ranges between forest fires, flooding, large storms, and more. These dangerous weather events impact both the existing environment and the places where people live; damaging homes and agricultural crops, reducing food supply, thus creating an impact on people's physical and mental health. Changes in weather or temperature can also change the rate at which diseases and their pathogens (bacteria) spread. The pollution in the air can also have a dangerous effect, as it can lead to respiratory illness in some people. It is sometimes easy to think that climate change is an issue for the future and not to consider what consequences our decisions may have. Nonetheless, these decisions can bring change to the earth for better or for worse. It is important to be mindful of how our choices in the present will affect what happens to future generations.

Fact:
Since 1880 average global temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius.

What is your greatest concern in terms of climate change and its effects?

Update from Camp Grafton
Another successful camping season has wrapped up at Camp Grafton! After a two summer hiatus, kids were back and enjoying this outdoor ministry once again. During the years where we were unable to run programming, the Camp Grafton Society kept busy, working on a number of critical capital projects. Through the generosity of donors and the hard work of our volunteers, we now have a brand new septic field and a washhouse! That's right, Camp Grafton now has showers and flush toilets! But don't worry, the biffies are still there and very much in use, giving campers old and new, that 'real camp experience'! Next up on the agenda is a new kitchen. It is an ambitious project that the Society will be fundraising for intensively. To learn more about camping ministry and what happens at Camp Grafton, join us for a camping themed service on September 18. To get involved or for more information, you can contact Alix, chair of the Camp Grafton Board of Directors, at alix.dolson@gmail.com

What are you reading this week?
Continuing from last week, I am still reading Stanley Tucci's Taste: My life through Food.

But this week I wanted to talk about one of my favorite books, Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl. I read this book during the summer in 8th grade. I found myself getting lost in Anne's world, as she describes her days, and started praying that hopefully, she will be safe after the war. That did not happen, as we know from history.

But I continue to find myself connected to Anne. I was just getting into my teenage years when I read the book and she was about the same age when Anne wrote her diary, which eventually became this popular book. All I would like to say to Anne today is, "Anne, you will always be special to me."
