Letter from the Editor:

Welcome back for the fall 2022 semester! The Margaret Sloss Center for Women's and Gender Equity is space that uses educational tools and community aid to be a resource for students, faculty, and staff on campus.

My name is Madison Mason (shey/they) and I am a senior majoring in Women's and Gender Studies and Speech and Communications with a minor in Journalism and Mass Communication. I'm going to be the PR and Communications intern for the Sloss Center this semester.

In this bi-weekly newsletter you will get information about events and programs that involve these concepts at Iowa State.

I'm someone who finds importance in resources and community aid. So throughout this semester, I would like this newsletter to be deemed a resource, and the Sloss House to be used as a form of community aid.

I want this newsletter to be a guide to folx in the Iowa State community to stay up to date with diversity, equity, and inclusion on and off campus.

Throughout the course of the Fall 2022 semester, I will keep y'all up to date with all the opportunities, resources, guides, and community aid that is available to students, faculty, and staff in order to provide support for everyone.

Any additional information can be found on our
website

If any individuals have any questions about events and programs, feel free to reach out to me: mamason@iastate.edu

We can't wait to continue to encourage and create a safe and brave environment for people on campus, and we hope you will cultivate it with us.

In community,

Madison Mason (she/they)
PR and Communications intern.

OUT Exhibition

OUT extends an invitation to connect to the LGBTQIA+ community with authenticity. Each artwork was chosen because they bring forward key elements of community building like creation and maintenance or people and locations.

The artwork featured in OUT presents communities in a way that contains abundance, masses, and movements that are neither monolithic nor are they stagnant. A few of the artworks invite you to share specifically in the LGBTQIA+ community in hopes that you will understand and see what we know and hold dear. Other artworks invite you to see the more difficult parts of community: the loneliness, the effort, the isolation, and the need to escape.

By actively engaging in OUT, you are actively engaging in the many levels of community in and around the exhibition. You are building a community with the artwork, with the artist, with the people and places the artist calls community, with the Octagon Art Center, with Ames, and with me. Welcome.

-AJ Castle, Out exhibition juror
