Environmental Action

Public Consultations
These last few months GEAI have been busy making public submissions. GEAI’s participation in public consultations is important for all national policies. The responses we will publish are as follows:

Developing a Hydrogen Strategy for Ireland

In July, a hydrogen strategy for Ireland was launched. The Government made clear statements on the promotion of Green Hydrogen, which GEAI strongly supports.
Our Research and Policy team answered questions on Energy Security and Energy research. To read them please click here.

Energy Poverty Strategy

The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications invited stakeholders to answer some questions about the Strategy to Combat Energy Poverty.
The consultation aimed to overcome new challenges that have emerged since the publication of the strategy and to ensure at-risk households are prepared for winter. To see our responses please click here.

Biodiversity Loss

The Citizens Assembly were consulted to find ways to improve biodiversity loss and make a proposal for its improvement. GEAI as a member of the Assembly focused on prioritising soil biodiversity, as it is the base of life on earth, as well as being essential to food security. To see the rest of the questions and answers please click here

Climate Action Plan 2023

In August, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications called for evidence  on the changes required to achieve the targets set for 2030 and 2050. The consultation overlooks measures for all fields of activity.
The research done by the GEAI team puts particular focus on Just Transition, Energy Poverty, Transport, as well as Waste and the Circular Economy. To see the rest of the questions and answers please click here

Small-Scale Generation Support Scheme

The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications is developing a support scheme for Small-Scale Generation (SSG) that contributes to meeting the targets on renewable electricity set out in the Climate Action Plan 2021, helping to deliver the target of 5.5 GW of solar energy by 2023.
GEAI is focused not only on helping develop the solar power sector in Ireland but also on highlighting the difficulties and specific barriers impacting Community projects in rural areas.  It will soon be available through the following Link

Community News

Youth Exchange in Greece

Orfeas and Good Energies Alliance Ireland organised their first Youth Exchange! Five young students from Lough Allen college, in Drumkeeran travelled to Xylochastro in Greece to be part of “Build ecotopia”. It is an international environmental project where they have the opportunity to learn how to protect the sustainability of the planet and become more environmentally aware.

Drumshanbo Sunflower Summer Camp

Carina, Daniela, Julie, and Mariangela, and a local facilitator, Lorraine McHugh, brought the Sunflower Summer Camp funded Leitrim Childcare Community by to local Ukrainian kids in Drumbshanbo.
A space was created with different tables, which allowed the kids to explore many activities: reading corner, creative tables, lego station, messy play with playdough and finger-painting, as well as care for the Environment.  The Summer Camp’s goal was to provide tools that will help smooth out the transition into the upcoming school year. Both GEAI and Lorraine could not be happier by the amazing reaction from everyone! To read more please click here.
Ballinaglera Digital Hub

The Ballinaglera Community Hall is now also a digital hub with everything you need to focus on doing your best work.  It offers high-speed stable fibre connection and access to other facilities (e.g., printer and fax) and complementary services in the Hall that help improve the quality of your working life.
More than providing digital tools, the hub is also a space to bring people together and build a sense of community. We are looking forward to joining us. To know more about our digital hub, click here.

What's new in the GEAI team?

Two new GEAI volunteers

GEAI welcomed two volunteers, Alessandro and Hector! These two young volunteers come from sunny places and bring with them the energy and desire to take part in climate action projects. Alessandro is from Módena in Italy, he oversees the Ballinaglera Digital Hub and he is conducting research on data centres all around Ireland. To know more about him and his journey to Ireland click here.
Héctor is Spanish and comes from Santa Coloma, a city close to Barcelona, he is part of both the Communications and the Recruitment teams. To learn more about his journey from Spain click here

GloRe training in Italy

Julie, Mariangela and Leslie participated in a training in Italy provided by GEAI’s partner organisation, Glore Network. The organisation presents an innovative way to certify ‘soft skills’ as well as training through non-formal education practices. Between the 10th and 16th of September the “Eureca” training was held in the idyllic Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park in Italy.
People from 13 different countries had the opportunity to network and learn more about Glore. Furthermore, through activities like reflective walks and empowerment exercises, all attendees learned non-conventional tools to improve their future participation in volunteering and mentoring projects. To know more about Glore please click here.
