Webinar: How to Legally Protect Your Podcast

Whatever stage you're at in your podcasting career, protecting yourself and the content you make is crucial. Often, creators fail to get their podcast in order from a legal perspective, and can potentially face ramifications down the line regarding intellectual property rights, trademark infringement, and even guest agreements.
Alexia Bedat, entertainment and media lawyer at Klaris Law, will join us this weekend for a workshop on how to keep yourself legally protected, including when contracts are needed, how to think about your IP (both in the short and long term), whether copyright or trademark registrations should be filed, the RSS feed, and how to avoid getting into trouble for what you say on your podcast.
Register before tonight and join us tomorrow at 1pm ET / 10am PT!

  • Ahead of Hispanic Heritage Month coming up in a few weeks, here are some of the best Spanish and Latino podcasts to listen to for learning and laughing, according to Oprah Daily. LWC Studios' Latina to Latina is included amongst notable series like Diane Guerrero's Yeah No, I'm Not OK, Pam Covarrubias' Café con Pam and Diana Limongi's Parenting and Politics.
  • A recent article published on Apple Podcasts' creator website details the company's plans for RSS feeds in the upcoming year. In addition to new guidelines for submitting shows, tags that will no longer be supported are also mentioned.
  • In their latest study, Sounds Profitable and Edison Research address one of podcasting's biggest debates: are host-read ads really better? After These Messages examines the relative efficacy of three different types of ad execution; live host-read, scripted host-read and announcer read. The data reveals live-host read ads are received better, especially by new listeners. Download the full report.

What We're Listening To

From Us: Uncertainty, loss, fear of criticism and failure are feelings that business owners know all too well. In the latest episode of How to Talk to [High Achievers] about Anything, guest Akarsh Vinod details his internal struggles and doubts as he starts his own company and launches his first product. Psychotherapist Stevon Lewis shares tips for entering into new spaces and moving with certainty.
From Other Folks: The long-anticipated podcast from Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has finally launched. In the first episode of Archetypes, Meghan talks with none other than tennis legend Serena Williams about the double standard women face when they're labeled as ambitious. The episode opens up with a clip of 11-year old Meghan's reaction to a sexist ad for dishwashing soap. She explains it as "an awakening to the millions of ways, big and small, that our society tries to box women in, to hold women back, to tell women who and what they should and can be." Listen to the first episode and the trailer out now.

Overheard on Podcasting, Seriously Live

This week we welcomed Amy Westervelt, an award-winning journalist and host, producer of the climate change podcast Drilled, and the founder of production company Critical Frequency, to talk about fact-checking for podcasts. Some takeaways are:
  • As Amy said, “If you’re not mildly annoyed by your fact checker, they’re not doing their job.” Attention to detail and a commitment to confirming all that you can is key, especially when talking about other people's lives. Amy shared an anecdote about a fact-checker who referenced the Farmer’s Almanac to confirm a certain date in history was indeed “a warm day.” Thoroughness is also important to avoid libel cases.
  • When you're fact-checking, start by highlight anything that has a number and anything that's capitalized to verify you're covering important information like dates, figures, measurements, surnames, and institutional names.
  • Amy recommends the following resources for fact-checking:
