Webinar on Zoom: Wednesday 7th September 3-4pm

The Social Model of disability has driven much of the successes of the Global Disability Rights Movement. Developed by disabled people it informs many key policy approaches including the UNCRPD. But how much do we know about what the social model means, its importance to disabled people and its practical implications for policy development and investment in the inclusion of disabled people?

Join ILMI for an informative webinar on Wednesday 7th September at 3pm. Our ILMI ONSIDE project Coordinator Peter Kearns will MC a panel discussion featuring disabled activists from Ireland and abroad. The panel will feature inputs from ILMI ONSIDE Disability Equality Coordinator Dr James Casey, disabled activist and author of “The War on Disabled People” Ellen Clifford, ILMI VOICE Community Development worker Paula Soraghan and ILMI Strategies for Change Coordinator Fiona Weldon.

ISL will be provided on the day.

Who is this webinar for? This webinar will benefit anyone who is interested in learning about how building an inclusive Ireland, and why the social model is crucial to informing inclusion. It will be of particular interest to politicians, policy makers, public servants, funders, Community organisations, Trade unions, equality and human rights organisations and disabled activists.

ILMI VOICE Tipperary Project

IMAGE: photo shows Nicola with a group of young people in NLN as she gives her talk on the VOICE Project

This week Nicola Meacle our ILMI VOICE project worker met with some of the great people who work in the National Learning Network Clonmel in Tipperary. Nicola gave a fantastic talk about the project to a brilliant group of young people.  They asked some good questions which Nicola fielded well and that is part of the beauty of VOICE, we all learn together as we go along. (In fact Our Nicola may become a Tik Tok expert!)

Nicola also paid a visit to Employability in Clonmel to meet with John Collins who was keen to hear about the VOICE project and agreed to promote the project locally.

Are you a disabled person living in Tipperary? Would you like to learn new skills, meet more people and work towards being a more active agent for change in your local community? Then sign up for our one hour free online workshops over the 5 weeks.

“VOICE” stands for Virtual Online Inclusive Communities for Empowerment and is based on digital networking, peer mentoring and empowering disabled people to be agents for change.

It uses Zoom to build online collective spaces for disabled people. This is a practical way to connect with other disabled people and work together to resolve a local issue, i.e., an access issue, or get advice from others in the sessions on getting on the local council housing list etc.
