Text: Proverbs 25:6-7, Luke 14:1, 7-14
12th Sunday after Pentecost

Worship This Sunday

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host, and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 14:1, 7-10)

In the Roman Empire, social status and the accompanying power and privilege wasn't just about being invited to the right social occasions, it was the place you were assigned at the table when you got there. Jesus came to show another way and tell another story to live by, one in which everyone is included and there is always room at the table.

Welcome New Cornellians!
As part of their orientation, new students at Cornell will be volunteering throughout the Mount Vernon-Lisbon communities. A group of 4-6 students will be at our church, pulling weeds on the embankment north of the parking lot. Feel free to join Pastor Lori and the crew and give them a warm welcome!

THIS SUNDAY—NOISY OFFERING
During Discovery Time this Sunday, August 28, the children will be collecting loose change and "quiet money" that will be shared with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). Current PDA campaigns include response to flooding in Missouri and Kentucky, in July, tornadoes that touched in the midwest last December, assistance for refugees from Afghanistan and ongoing assistance in Ukraine and the surrounding countries helping refugees. Long after the headlines are forgotten, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance continues to help. Join us supporting their good work!

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
Sunday School begins again on September 11th!
Kids participating will leave the Sanctuary following Discovery Time during the morning service.
Two classes will be offered based on grade level: PreK through 3rd, and 4th through 6th.
This year both in Worship and Sunday School, we will use the Narrative Lectionary. The Narrative Lectionary follows the story of the Bible from the Old Testament through New Testament, from Genesis to Pentecost.

WEDNESDAY YOUTH FELLOWSHIP
We are also excited to announce Youth Fellowship will begin on Wednesday, September 14th in collaboration with the United Methodist Church and Seeds of Faith Lutheran Church.
Youth Group will be for Grade 6-12. Meetings will take place from 6 - 7:30 pm either at the Methodist Church or here at First Presbyterian and include a meal.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS
To save paper and postage, we have not been sending out quarterly contribution statements. We will send out end-of-year statements in late December/early January. If you ever have a question about your contributions or pledge amount status, please reach out to Marie (FirstPresMV Treasurer) at office@firstpresmv.com.
