ISPB and PBIL would like to thank Zenni for their incredibly generous donation of over 200 free glasses coupons for children in need.

If you have access to your child's current prescription (with pupillary distance, and the prescription is less than one year old), and a new pair of glasses is needed, please contact rbarraza@preventblindness.org.
 
Prevent Blindness' Financial Assistance Program
If you are in need of a complete eye exam and/or glasses, Prevent Blindness offers a financial assistance program for those who qualify. Prevent Blindness partners with VSP Eyes of Hope Program and the OneSight Eyeglass Program to provide access to quality eye care and glasses.

Program qualifications include:
  • Income at or below the current 200% federal poverty guidelines
  • No vision benefits through Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance

Community Happenings
 
Our staff, team of interns and volunteers provide eye health education and outreach at all types of community events that include health fairs, presentations and screenings! After an action packed summer of screening over 440 children and adults and delivering vital eye education to 1,500 people during 22 events, we will be continuing our efforts during these dates:

September 17             Aetna Fall Festival, Chicago
September 25             Horizon Screening Event, Soldier Field
September 30             Horizon Screening Event, Wrigley Field
October 9                    HEAL Elgin, Elgin
October 14                  Alderman Cardona's Senior Health and Resource Fair

Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month
 
September is Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month at ISPB and Prevent Blindness Illinois. Some sports present a heightened risk of serious eye injury and blindness. To reduce the occurrence eye injuries, Prevent Blindness strongly supports efforts to ensure that anyone involved in athletics utilize appropriate safety eyewear. 
 
Ninety percent of eye injuries are preventable and using the right kind of protection while playing sports can help prevent serious eye damage!  Visit our dedicated page to learn more about sports eye safety and download our free resources.
 
Looking for a Presentation for your Organization?

PBIL/ISPB offers presentations on a variety of eye health topics and can range from from 30 to 60+ minutes.

Some topics include:
  • Living Well with Low Vision
  • Aging and your eyes
  • Women's Vision and Eye Health
  • Eye Safety in the Workplace
  • Diabetes and the Eyes

Don't Forget Back to School Eye Exams!

If you child is attending kindergarten or an Illinois school for the first time, they must have an eye exam before October 15 or within 30 days of enrollment (for new students who are coming from out-of-state). A licensed optometrist or doctor who conducts eye exams must perform the exam.

Vision Screening: Birth Through High School Webinar

Interested in children's vision screening? Attend this webinar presented by Kay Nottingham Chaplin, EdD. This session will provide information about evidence-based screening tools for children, and ways to bridge the gap between the vision screening referral and the confirmatory eye examination process. Join us on October 19th to learn strategies for successful follow-up after vision screening referrals.
