First, From the Heart

Greetings friends,

In our monthly alumni gathering yesterday, colleagues expressed deep appreciation for simply being together at this time. We felt the aliveness of being in community, the safety of sharing our difficult emotions, and marveled at how the grip of intensity lessened as we offered our presence and hearts to each other.

For some, the pace of work life is quickening as September beckons with a torrent of new activity. We heard about anticipation, anxiety, and personal intentions for reinvigorating the practices of inner compassion. We explored the simple idea of savoring the good, if even for 30 or 60 seconds. And we reminded each other that the most challenging and triggering people in our lives are doing the best they can. Just like me.

As the amount of daylight shifts – increasing or decreasing in your part of the world – we are called to honor the natural cycles that we often forget we are a part of. When we engage wholeheartedly with all that is, and especially with each other, life shows us what a gift it is to be here, right now.

With love,

Laura

Positive Links Speaker Series: What Inclusive Leaders Do Differently – Quinetta Roberson
University of Michigan Center for Positive Organizations
Wednesday, September 14, 2022, 2-3:00pm ET

As workplaces have become increasingly disconnected, individuals have a stronger need for a sense of connection and community. They want to work in environments in which they can be their authentic selves and are valued for their contributions. Leaders are expected to build these types of environments, but to do so in a moment when their plates are already full.

This talk will explore the how of inclusive leadership. Based on her body of research and advisory work with organizations, Dr. Roberson will offer strategies for developing an inclusive mindset and practicing leadership behaviors for creating more inclusive work environments. By incorporating inclusive leadership into daily activities and interactions, we can foster workplaces in which everyone feels enabled to be their best selves. Find out more and register.

Practice Matters

Communing

Alone. Many of us relish time for ourselves to tune inward. The quiet inside space that nurtures, restores, and fuels our creative juices. We sit in our aloneness, and simultaneously sense our connection to all there is. This place at the intersection of our inner and outer selves is a rich resource for our wellbeing. Both alone and connected – whole.

Yet sometimes we feel alone and isolated. Or maybe we are in the physical presence of others and suffer from feeling apart or not belonging. Separate. Unsupported. Loneliness can literally be the death of us. Our basic human instincts drive us to overcome the profound lack of emotional or energetic connection. Sadly, sometimes we lose our capacity to connect and then we withdraw and wither.

Especially in these times, we need the support of our fellow humans – those with whom we resonate and who offer us a safe connection and a sense of belonging. A community that is like-minded, understanding, and aligned with our deepest values and desires. When the old structures are broken or no longer serve you, find new communities or create your own. Meaningful relationships are the lifeblood that will enable us to build the next chapter of our emerging world. Reach out, with love and compassion for all.

When can we practice? Always!
