Building Thinking ClassroomsBook: Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics

Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 by Peter Liljedahl helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. We had a full session at Summer Institute, and many teachers have begun implementing them in their classroom this year.

BTC Classroom Tips: Organizing Students and Supplies

I had the opportunity to join students on their first day in Theresa Slater's class at Skyview as she introduced them to their Thinking Classroom. She had great strategies for organizing students and supplies that enabled smooth transitions and that might be helpful for teachers implementing these practices.

To form visibly random groups, students received a random playing card as they entered the classroom that corresponded to the number of a card on a table tent and on a vertical whiteboard work space. This made it easy for all students to know where to sit and where to work on the tasks.

On each board, Theresa hung a small pouch from a magnetic clip. Inside each pouch was one group marker and a cloth eraser. This eliminated the need to hand out or collect supplies for group work at the VPNS (vertical non-permanent surface).

I really enjoyed watching students work together to create Number Bracelets and explore the 24 puzzle. A big thanks to Theresa and her students for including me on their first day!
