Hello to all Hort Society members

Well, where has the summer gone!! It seems to just flown by. We hope you have all been enjoying the wonderful summer weather, despite the few very hot days, and your gardens. For those of you that have vegetable gardens, you must be enjoying your bounty. The tomatoes this year have been incredible, and the peaches – yum!!

We’re sending a few timely updates now in advance of the notice of our regular general meetings this fall, scheduled for September 27, October 25 and November 22. Stay tuned for more information. We hope that our meetings will be entirely in person but will arrange for Zoom session as needed.

  1.  The Hort Society board is very pleased to announce that Sheila Hirsch-Kalm has received the 2022 Year of the Garden Hero award, presented by Gardens Canada, as part of the national Year of the Garden initiative. The NOTL Communities in Bloom Committee is holding a ceremony for Sheila to receive a certificate of congratulations on  Tuesday, August 30, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Sweets & Swirls Café at the Community Centre (14 Anderson Lane). In addition, we will be honouring Sheila at our September 27 general meeting. As you all know, Sheila is a passionate gardener who is so generous with her time and her garden and is always willing and eager to educate and foster better understanding of all things garden and horticulture. She truly deserves this award, and more.
  2.  Many of our members visited Shirley Madsen’s lovely gardens earlier this month for a morning and an evening garden stroll. We would like to continue this tradition while the weather is still nice. Shirley has offered to open up her garden once again in the next couple of weeks. If anyone else would like to do this, please contact Cindy via email or phone call to suggest a date and time. She will then send out a note to all members with this information. It would be good if we could get a schedule of two or three gardens over a few days or week. You can contact Cindy anytime at cgrant36@cogeco.ca or 905-468-7498.
  3. On a more practical note, Joanne and Cindy will be at the William/Nassau garden next Wednesday August 31 @ 10 a.m. to begin some late summer clean-up. If you are available that day, please stop by and help out. Bring your secateurs, a trowel and a rake. We’ll have bags for the cuttings, etc. We hope to see you there.
  4. Joanne and Cindy recently met with Julian Trachsel and Ruth Denyer at the new Community Garden on Niven Road to discuss the possibility of the Hort. Society working with them and others to create a pollinator garden at that site for next year. This is an exciting project that will build on the terrific success of the community garden this year. We will share more news on this at our September meeting but thought that members may like to know that this may be happening this fall and next spring.

Happy Gardening. See you on September 27, if not before.

Cindy and Joanne
