City Launches DOT Paratransit Services

Alexandria Paratransit

The City of Alexandria introduced a new app that allows users of the City’s paratransit service, DOT, to book pre-scheduled rides using a mobile device. DOT is a specialized transportation service for city residents and visitors who cannot use transit due to disability.

The new app and accompanying software will also improve efficiency and quality of service for riders by streamlining vehicle dispatching and shortening wait times. Other benefits include the ability to:

  • Reserve, track, and cancel rides through the app
  • Receive automated ride notification reminders the night before a reservation, when the vehicle is approaching, and when the vehicle has arrived
  • Pay for fares by credit card
  • Receive a 30-minute pickup window to allow service to run more efficiently and serve more riders
The enhancements to the DOT program were made through the City’s partnership with Via, a LOCATION-based transit technology company that has implemented similar improvements to paratransit programs in Hampton Roads, VA, Grand Rapids, MI, and Berlin, Germany. Via’s tech-enabled public transportation solutions are used by more than 600 communities in 36 countries.

Visit alexandriava.gov/Paratransit for more information on the City’s paratransit program, including service hours and instructions on booking a ride through the new app.

Major Blue and Yellow Line Closures

Major Blue Line and Yellow Line Construction

Starting Saturday, September 10, WMATA's Major Blue Line and Yellow Line Construction will rehabilitate the Yellow Line tunnel and bridge between Pentagon and L'Enfant Plaza stations and connect the new Potomac Yard Station to the mainline rail system. During the Potomac Yard prep work, six stations south of Reagan National Airport on the Yellow and Blue lines will be closed from Sept. 10 - Oct. 22, 2022.

The closure is necessary to complete the rehabilitation of the Yellow Line tunnel and bridge between Pentagon and L'Enfant stations, as well as to connect the new Potomac Yard Station. The shutdown is expected to end in October 2022. Construction work on the Blue and Yellow Line will continue in the second phase of the project, which will take place from October 2022 to May 2023.

To learn more about the project and sign up for construction alerts from WMATA, visit: wmata.com/majorconstruction. Please refer to Transportation Options on the The Carlyle Council website for alternative commuting options.

Car Free Day 2022

Car Free Day 2022
Drop your car keys for a day and participate in the Car Free Day 2022 on Thursday, September 22, 2022! Use public transit, carpool/vanpool (car-lite), bike, scooter, walk, or telework.

Car Free Day is a worldwide event that encourages greener methods of travel; meaning ways to get around other than driving alone by car. Commuter Connections hosts Car Free Day in the Washington, DC region to bring awareness to the benefits of travel options such as transit, bicycling and walking; and also telework for people who can work from home. Carpooling and vanpooling count too, we call that “car-lite” since they are both lighter on the wallet and the environment than driving alone in a car.

All are welcome to take the Car Free Day pledge whether you’re a Washington DC area resident, commuter, or student. Once you take the Online Pledge, we will automatically enter you into a raffle for all sorts of great prizes!

As a thank you, all who take the Car Free Day pledge will receive a confirmation email with a $30 Nift Gift (neighborhood gift) online Promo Code. With the Nift app, discover great local businesses in neighborhoods where you live or work.
