Medals Earned At English Champs

This weekend 3 of our juniors travelled to Bedford to take part in the England Athletics Age Group Championships. Just reaching this event is a huge achievement due to the very high entry standards required, but Lauren, Sadie and Luke all earned the right to compete. Lauren was making her debut at this level, and acquitted herself superbly to top a fine season. She finished 5th her 800m heat, in her 2nd ever fastest time of 2:15.58. A fantastic learning opportunity for Lauren. Also on Saturday, Luke Pichler began his marathon weekend in the long jump. He struggled badly with managing his approach on the very bouncy runway, but all it takes is one good jump - and valid jump is all he had and he sailed out to 6.25m to take the English national title, adding to his indoor crown.
On sunday, Sadie Parker was in action in the long jump, against a stellar field. In an exciting competition, Sadie remained in the top 2 positions throughout with a superbly consistent series. In round 5, she leaped out to a huge club record of 5.56m to put herself in the lead. However, it was not to be, as a fellow competitor ( the UK lead) produced a fine 5.61m in the last round to snatch gold from Sadie. Regardless, a silver medal and big PB was a fantastic result. Next up was Luke in the high jump, and he set things up superbly with a series of first time clearances up to 1.76m putting him in first place. He was unable to clear the next height, eventually finishing with a brilliant silver medal. Shortly after, Luke progressed through his 80m hurdles heat, despite niggles and cramps setting in. He lined up for the hurdles final and produced a relaxed and rhythmical run to take 2nd by a fraction, with a time of 11.31 - his 3rd medal of the weekend.
Closer to home, it was a quieter weekend of parkrun action. Liliana finished near the top of the field at Whitley Bay, whilst Jack Webster made his debut at the South Beach parkrun finishing in 4th place. Well done to both!

On Saturday we got the chance to promote our club at the Blyth Youth Fair, alongside other youth clubs and organisations from the region. We got the chance to meet a commonwealth boxing medalist from Blyth, as well as speak to our local Councillor and set down our demands that a track is built in Blyth. Thanks to Clair for taking charge of this!

If you have achieved a standard (must be a legal performance on power of 10), you are entitled to a badge. Athletes will receive their first badge FREE. Thereafter, they cost £4.50 each, contact Dan if you wish to purchase one.

MASSIVE PLEA FOR HELP FROM OUR PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
Athletics can only run thanks to the support of volunteers. One thing we are desperately short of is FIELD OFFICIALS. These are volunteers who can help run field events at T&F comps, in particular the NEYDL. As a participating club, we are required by the rules to provided qualified officials at NEYDL events, something we have struggled to do last year. This year, if we are unable to fulfill our obligation to provide officials, we will not only lose points, but also we will be limited in the numbers of athletes we can enter into field events. This is something that we cannot allow to happen.
If you wish to consider starting on the officiating journey, then please know that you will have the full support of the club and all fees will be paid in full by the club. Officials receive expenses, and have opportunities to progress if the ambition is there. Officials from Blyth have recently been in action at World-Class Diamond League events, and will testify that it is the most rewarding experience.
