During Langley’s First Saturday Art Walk
Angèle Woolery works in a richly colored, impasto style of painting, portraying florals, landscapes, and still lives. In bold, yet measured strokes she captures the vitality of her subjects and gives them a dynamic essence that radiates off the canvas. Her exuberant engagement with her subject results in paintings that capture the viewers immediate attention.
Woolery loves the challenge of a blank canvas; the prospect of a new beginning. “There’s an excitement and exuberance in the beginning of each painting,” she said. “I have a need to paint, to express whatever I’ve got going on inside.”
Angèle said she feels her strengths are in the bold way she uses the paint, and her use of brilliant color. “For me painting is a series of corrections. When I don’t see any more need for corrections, I know I’m finished.”
Woolery grew up in post-war Munich, Germany, tagging along with her father on plein-air painting expeditions. At 14 she moved to the United States and attended the High School of Art & Design in New York. Later she moved to Los Angeles and worked for many years drawing Flintstone and Scooby Doo cartoon cells for Hanna-Barbara Studio. Since moving to Whidbey Island she has concentrated on painting the lush images she imagined doing in her youth.

Kelly Liedtke, pen & ink aritst
Kelly Liedtke is a pen and ink artist with a full time life, who resides in the Coupeville area. The drawings are created using .038 and .005 mm fineliner ink pens and micron or similar ink pens. Each drawing takes between 20 and 60 hours to complete based on color and density. The subjects are usually ordinary miracles shown in a new perspective. The drawings encourage the viewer to delight in the shadows and dance in the highlights.

Mary Ellen O'Connor
I am passionate about nature, wildlife, metalwork and color. My work as a fine art metalsmith combines all of these, and keeps me creatively engaged on a daily basis. Whether I am making a pair of earrings, a sterling box or a 24k gold and copper wall piece, I see variations of the shapes and designs that I have been exploring for decades. The wall pieces are allowing me to work larger than ever before, and are bringing challenges and rewards in equal measure. I am enjoying applying 24k gold leaf to copper panels to bring a new dimension to the wildlife I use in my designs. The flame patinas add incredible colors in a process that takes me to the knife's edge of disaster or success. That level of challenge at this point of my career is truly a wonderful place to be as an artist.

Coming up is a free morning of information about REMBRANDT OIL COLORS professional artist oils by JEFF OLSEN FROM ROYAL TALENS, Jeff Olsen holds a BA and MFA in painting and drawing and is a working artist exhibiting for more than thirty years. He has more than a decade of college and university teaching experience in studio art, and more than twenty years in the art material industry with product expertise in a variety of mediums; Olson’s lectures deliver meaningful insights into the history, development, and application of artists’ materials.

Aleah is from Langley, Whidbey Island and we are very proud to have her. Aleah is an unusual and extremely impressive painter whose direct portrayals of the human form have expanded the conversation around western culture’s representations of the body in art. The first Saturday Art Walk on September 3rd from 5pm - 7pm is your
chance to see new work at Whidbey Art Gallery in Langley and
meet many of our artists in person.
We are excited to have Ellen Santoni as our guest artist for the
month. She is a local artist who retired to South Whidbey after
a 40 year career in marketing and advertising. She now works
exclusively in transparent media: watercolor, ink, cyanotypes and
eco prints. She says, “This collection represents the authentic
beauty and profound unpredictability of nature. Coaxing color and
defining shapes out of common local plants provides a
playground for my creativity.” You will want to see this body of
work!
Our featured artist is gallery member Carol Rose Dean. We are
looking forward to seeing her featured handmade tile work. She
always has something interesting in the gallery.

Artworks Gallery's featured Artists for September are
Madrone Moulton and Ginny O’Neill.
Artist Madrone Moulton enjoys craft work, and she has always been curious about how things come together. She has extensive experience in picture framing, so her artwork involves taking treasures and showcasing them to create exceptional, one-of-a-kind keepsakes filled with balance and harmony. Recently, Madrone was given four lovely slices of lapis. She was inspired to create a set of four shadowboxes. Pictured works: “Compassion,” “Wonder” and “Deep Blue Sea.”
Ginny O'Neill has been a watercolorist for 20 years. Although her work appears quite detailed, she's eager to follow the accidental patterns that only watercolor can produce. Her subjects include the water and land of the Pacific Northwest and wildlife of the region. She recently started working on canvas and incorporating more color; the results are stimulating and exceptional. Pictured paintings: “Crow with Sunflowers” and “Boats in a Row.”
September Guest Artist, Cheryl Weisz, is an award-winning illustrator. Her work is influenced by Impressionism and Photorealism but carries its own creatively emotional content. Cheryl: I have been gifted a lifelong happy career in making my Ideal Artist Lifestyle a reality. I was born to draw and did, in advertising agencies, publication houses and newspapers. Having illustrated my fill of products like hamburger bun packaging and furniture, I’m delighted to now paint the things I find around me in this island paradise. Pictured paintings: “Dungeness Dames,” “Grandfather Tree II,” and “A Wonderful World of Water.”

18th Annual Woodpalooza
In 2001 the Whidbey Island Woodworkers Guild was formed to bring together the woodworking community of Whidbey. The Guild includes makers of furniture, cabinetry, architectural woodwork, tuners, clock makers, sawyers, carvers, restorers, musical instrument makers, boat builders and refinishers.
Each of the monthly meetings, typically hosted by a different member, provides an opportunity for the exchange of ideas, tips, solutions, business practices and insight to the various respective fields.
The Guild seeks to support professional woodworkers as well as inspire and educate the budding amateur and provide awareness to the general public of the skills available locally from its talented members.
