CELEBRATIONS AND THANK YOUS

  • Thank you to everyone for contributing to an amazing Book Week Parade. Thank you to those who helped with organising, setting up, supplying music and speaking. A special mention to Tom Norman for keeping things fun and engaging, you absolutely nailed it.
  • Thank you to Sue and Anita for hosting the Year 3-6 jumps, throws and long distance events on Wednesday, and to all those who supported the students. Thank you to the Year 3-6 crew who stayed on Thursday afternoon for this week’s carnival briefing.
  • Thank you to teachers who came out of their classes to meet with Dr Lorraine Hammond last week; especially Sarah Druitt who bravely modelled a demo lesson at short notice!
  • Thank you to Katelyn and Kylie who have sourced, read, researched and short-listed which decodable readers would be best for middle and upper. These are now going to be ordered. We really appreciate them both giving up their DOTT and personal time to do this.
  • Thank you Anne for organising the Italian incursion. The students were happy and well fed!
  • Thank you Bree, Paulina and Mel Cross for all of your extra work in preparation for NAIDOC Week. We appreciate your efforts and look forward to an exciting week.
  • Thank you to all of the teachers who have been trying out different features of the Compass platform.

PRINCIPALS PEN

After a long period of pandemic-induced disruption I think many of us had forgotten the special feeling that large-scale whole school events that are inclusive of parents can bring to us. How last Friday changed that!

Family-school partnerships are crucial to every school and we have an important responsibility in nurturing these. Families trust schools to provide educational foundations for their children’s future and this is why it is important for families and schools to work together in partnership. Research demonstrates that effective schools have high levels of parental and community involvement, and this involvement is related to improved student learning, attendance and behaviour. Family involvement in schools is therefore central to high quality education and is part of the core business of schools.

To walk down the steps to the Tiger Turf on Friday morning to 800 kids and 200-300 parents and community members made me so proud to be a staff member at Mount Hawthorn PS. Then to chat with parents as they left the school later in the afternoon showed me how valuable they found the day. Everyone I spoke to was high in praise for the event and how much they enjoyed it. I had a parent of an ex-Mount Hawthorn PS student tell me that her daughter’s most memorable event from all of primary school was the book week parade, and that’s how many of today’s participating students will remember it. The dedication, effort, joy you all put into your roles on a daily basis was out there on display for our parents and community to see and it was deeply appreciated by those I spoke to. MC Captain Hook received plenty of kudos, too.

This week we move onto two more of our big annual events that are both great opportunities to celebrate the distinctive breadth of student opportunities at our school as well as further nurture family-school partnerships. Wednesday is our Year 3-6 faction carnival at Menzies and I am again looking forward to spending time enjoying the day with our students, staff and parents. It’s fabulous that the weather is looking likely to be amazing, too! Our NAIDOC week events also kick off, with the fabulous Alton Walley joining us for sessions with all PP to Year 6 classes, and a welcome and smoking ceremony on Friday. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

Have a great week, everyone!

- Leon

COMPASS CORNER

It was fantastic to see so many staff at the PL last Wednesday. If you could not attend the PL please view the recording so that you are ready to login and sandpit (play) with the features for the remainder of the term. We go live on the first school day of Term 4.

Tasks for this week;

  1. Login into Compass using your E Number and DOE password on the app or via a web browser eg Chrome on https://mounthawthornps-wa.compass.education

  2. You can access your school email by clicking on the icon when using a computer.

  3. Practice marking the roll at least once a week. You will need to mark the roll in Integris and Compass during the sandpit period. In term 4 you will only mark the roll in Compass.

  4. Please select a Compass Leader for your year level. There is no extra work required. This position is just a go to person for your team and I will liaise with them as needed. Please let me know who is selected from your team.

  5. If you would like some online PL on various aspects of Compass there are short videos available on the  Compass Academy. You will need to sign up initially and enrol in a course that suits your needs. Teacher Fundamentals is a good start and you can watch videos at your own pace on relevant topics.

  6.  Alternatively, when logged in to Compass, press at the top and then cid:image005.png@01D8B93A.C137F020. This contains useful .pdfs of how to do things within Compass.

Catch me or email if you have any questions. Have fun playing around!

Thank you - Jen

NAIDOC WEEK

Please find attached the outline of NAIDOC events for Weeks 7 and 8 here
Passports will look a little different this year. You will receive an A3 overview of activities you can action throughout Week 8. Do as many or as little as you like and tick them off as you go. These will also be printed and put into your pigeon holes this Friday the 1st of Sept, ready for the start of next week. Student copies are optional and available on the Drive and a copy will be placed in your pigeon hole.

Some activities use spaces in our school like the Outdoor Classroom and the Cultural Garden. Please work together to either share the space or if you find another class is there, please be flexible!
The activities with the Google Drive icon, mean there are resources/info on the Drive. This will be under @Mount Hawthorn Staff > RAP > **NAIDOC Class Overviews/activities.

FYI: Link to Alton Walley's timetable can be located here.

GREAT BOOK SWAP

Please support this fundraiser by encouraging students to bring in a preloved book. At this stage we do not have enough books to swap. An overview has gone out to parents and community this afternoon. Please send any books to the library. The Great book swap will be held next Wednesday 7 September 2022 during NAIDOC Week.

Thanks - Bree, Mel C & Paulina

BOOK WEEK PHOTOS

Last Friday everyone looked incredible, dressed up for the Book Week Parade. If you have any great book week photos of staff or your classroom, please send them through to myself so we can get them on our communication channels.

ALL STAFF MEETING RECORDING - 24 AUGUST 2022

Here is the link for the previous All Staff Meeting with the Introduction to Compass. The actual meeting starts at 18 minutes and 30 seconds, so skip to that part in the recording. Please note: the sound is a little soft - I think the audio may have switched to the computer’s microphone instead of the conference microphone.

PARENT DETAILS FOR FACTION CARNIVAL

Teachers Year 3 - 6 you need to make sure you take a class list with parent contact details with you to Menzies Park on Wednesday. This could be put in the same bag as your medicals.

Thank you - Anita & Sue

CLEANING OF SCHOOL

We are very short on Cleaners this week and due to this, I have asked the Cleaners just to do the necessities. Which are:

  • Toilets
  • Wiping Students Desks
  • Emptying of Rubbish Bins

So no mopping or vacuuming will be done, including shelves, in the classrooms.
It would help greatly if you could keep your rooms cleaner than normal, asking students to collect paper or items off the floor and clear desks? Anything will help!

Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you - Sharron
