WMHS to Host Kerry Wilkins-Demming Sept. 8th

The Winthrop Maine Historical Society Presents Kerry Wilkins-Demming
Thursday, September 8, 2022, 6:00 pm
Winthrop History and Heritage Center
107 Main Street
Apple enthusiasts of Winthrop gather 'round! Kerry Wilkins-Demming will discuss a History of Apples in Winthrop: What We Know and What We Don't Know. Her talk will cover the early history of Pond Town, the more recent history of apples in Winthrop, and the future of its apple orchards.
An early settler in what was then called "Pond Town," Ichabod Howe, planted orchards there. One of the seedlings became known as the "Winthrop Greening." The variety is now over 250 years old and can be found at the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity, where scion wood for it is available from Fedco trees.
A full-time registered nurse for 30 years, now working in hospice care, Kerry appreciates all things Maine, especially the history of apple orchards in Winthrop. One of her articles recently appeared in "ZEST" magazine and features a beloved cranberry bog near her family home, where she lives with her husband, Matthew, and their four children.
