More highlights from the 2022 Arts Conference!

Thank you Apolonia with South Dakota Public Broadcasting for sharing such a wonderfully heart filled interview with JJ James, Tyler Brink and Heather Pickering!  Grateful to have you all a part of our Arts Conference 2022!
Dakota Life: The Chair Is Not Me
"The Chair Is Not Me" is a poem and a collection of poems written and performed by Lakota actor and poet "JJ" James Janis. Born with cerebral palsy complicated with several other conditions, he was only expected to live for 12 hours, but 60 years later, he is still here! Flutter Productions creates theatrical opportunities for performers of all abilities to craft new works that challenge the perception of people with disabilities. Led by Artistic Director Heather Pickering and supported by fellow Black Hills Works actor Tyler Brink, Flutter Productions inspires people to connect and learn from the diversely abled. Featured performer at the 2022 South Dakota Arts Conference.
South Dakota Candidates Survey
on Arts and Government

As a service to our statewide membership and constituents, Arts South Dakota is conducting a survey of candidates for the South Dakota Governor, Legislature, United States Representative & United States Senate, asking for their perspectives on the arts and government.

As the state’s only arts advocacy group, Arts South Dakota is the public partner to the state arts agency. We do not endorse candidates for public office and all responses are published verbatim.

Visit Arts South Dakota for more information!

Sidewalk Arts Festival September 10
Arts South Dakota had such a great time connecting with the community last year, we wanted to participate again this year!

Join us for Arts, Crafts, Food and More at the Sidewalk Arts Festival on Saturday, September 10.

The festival is located on the streets surrounding the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls, SD, and is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Arts South Dakota has booth number 306, close to the food court (like last year)! See you there!

Join us for a series of arts meetups around the state! Arts South Dakota will be traveling to hear more about what is happening in a few of the many vibrant arts communities around the state, and to provide a space for local arts groups, artists, and arts supporters to come together.

Join for a drink, appetizer, and conversation. Invite your friends, colleagues, and community leaders – all are welcome, and no RSVP is necessary.

Arts in the Field
Stephen and Catherine Thurman truly brought the Arts Alive for South Dakota.

Arts Alive was the fist publication in South Dakota to bring together art enthusiasts and organizations throughout the state. They (Thurmans) wrote, edited, designed and coordinated 69 issues, plus a memorable edition in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the South Dakota Arts Council.

Last week Arts South Dakota gathered with much gratitude to give thanks to Stephen and Catherine for everything they have done for arts. Happy retirement Thurmans!

Artists in Schools and Communities Roster applications open
Black capital letter A with a blue squiggle through it and the works South Dakota Arts Council below it.

The South Dakota Arts Council invites artists in and near our state to apply to join our teaching artist roster to work in-residence throughout South Dakota communities. The deadline is Sept. 24.

The Artists in Schools and Communities program provides intensive, hands-on education in all arts disciplines to students of all ages by providing funds to schools and nonprofit organizations for residency activities. Artists develop their own residency lesson plans and then adapt them for work throughout the state. Residencies are coordinated through the South Dakota Arts Council as part of the Arts in Education program.
