Work Day to Enhance Wildlife Habitat and Recreation

On Sunday, September 11, Audubon of Kansas (AOK) and Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever's "Women on the Wing" are collaborating to offer a hands-on habitat management opportunity and hike at AOK’s Connie Achterberg Wildlife-Friendly Demonstration Farm. Two work groups will focus on different tasks.  One group will focus on habitat management by removing invasive elm from grassland buffer areas using chainsaws and loppers, applying chemical herbicide to prevent regrowth, and making wood piles so that they can be burned at a later date. If the elms are not removed, they will replace the diversity grasses and wildflowers with a monoculture of elm.  Quail prefer native grasses, wildflowers and trees for nesting and foraging. Another work group will add 0.6 miles of trails to the already established 0.6 miles of trails.  To do this, they will use weed eaters to remove grassy vegetation, hand pruners and loppers to remove small limbs, chainsaws to remove larger limbs, and shovels to remove tripping hazards. Equipment for trail improvements will be provided by the Kansas Trails Council’s ‘Trail in a Box’ program. At midday, AOK will provide a lunch while AOK and Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever representatives discuss the key components of managing for bobwhite quail.  After lunch, a short hike will show how AOK is managing for quail on the property.

The schedule consists of two working group sessions from 9-noon, and 2:30-5pm.  Lunch will be provided to participants at noon, followed by the discussion of managing land for quail.  The hike to see quail management areas will be from 1-2:30pm. Participants are welcome to come all day or for any portion of the day.

The sanctuary is the northwest corner of Iron and 170th – follow the Audubon of Kansas signs from Highway 14.

Participants should be prepared to spend the day outside. Although equipment will be provided, participants might also want to bring their own equipment including work gloves, sun protection, bug spray, loppers, chain saw, post hole digger, etc.

For more information, contact Jackie Augustine, AOK Executive Director, at 785-537-4385 or jackie@audubonofkansas.org.
