SET SAVING GOALS

Why is it important to set savings goals? Setting a specific savings goal will help you to begin to save money. If you are just putting money in a general savings account, you're more likely to withdraw money for other reasons. Here are some ideas to start your saving goal.
  1. Emergency Fund - Money to cover unexpected expenses such as car repair or appliance repair or replacement.
  2. Debt Repayment - Money that can be added to pay down loans or credit card debt.
  3. Retirement - Money to enjoy a comfortable standard of living when you stop or reduce the number of hours you work, such as a 401(k) plan.
  4. Large Purchases - Savings for things that you would like to have, but can't afford out of your monthly budget.
  5. Education - Money to help with a college education for yourself or your children, 529, or education savings account.
  6. Homeownership - Money for a downpayment on that dream home.
  7. Vacation - Money that you've earmarked for a future vacation.
  8. Investment Savings - Money that can be invested and build wealth over time.
Make a habit of paying "yourself first" by setting a savings goal. Select your goal and make it an automatic habit to put money aside for your goal. Include your savings goal in your monthly budget and commit to the amount you set to achieve.

The Financial Empowerment Center can assist you with achieving your goal! Contact us to attend one of our budgeting classes or to have confidential financial coaching sessions to discuss your finances. Visit our Booking Page or email info@fecsoco.org for more information.

Always keep an eye out for predatory lenders! When I hear this phrase, I think of a lion about to attack its prey. Predatory lenders are companies that provide loans to individuals, but at rates and at terms that are very expensive and often difficult to manage. There are several essential things to look out for that will help you identify a predatory loan.

First, be sure to do your basic research on the lender’s company name. You can find helpful feedback from the Better Business Bureau on most businesses, so perhaps start there. You can also Google the business, ask trusted friends and family or ask other lenders you have worked with. Essentially, know the party that is approaching you!

Secondly, pay careful attention to the upfront and ongoing fees associated with a predatory loan. If the upfront and ongoing fees feel high and difficult to manage, they probably are! Always compare it to other loans you may have received in the past or loans and terms from other reputable lenders, and read the fine print. Never sign something that you have not read completely because hidden fees are often buried in the fine print.

Lastly, predatory loans often have repayment terms that are difficult to manage. If you feel you are being asked to pay back a loan in a very quick timeframe
(including both principal and interest), then be sure to take a step back. When you sign up for loans, it should be under repayment terms that are manageable for you and your specific situation.

Unsure about a loan offer? The Financial Empowerment Center at South County can help! Schedule a free, confidential, virtual appointment with a Financial Coach and let our experts help you assess your situation and options. To schedule, an appointment for a financial coaching session click here.
