Note from Dr. Cannon
August 29, 2022
Dear Breton Downs Families,
It was wonderful to have everyone back in the building last week and to feel the excitement of a new school year! The first month of school is always busy as students spend time learning classroom and school routines, procedures, and expectations inside and outside of our building. The staff and I are excited to cultivate a love of learning with our students and celebrate that we are kind, caring, and respectful. Please note that there is no school this coming Friday, September 2 or next Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day holiday.
Throughout the year the staff and I will take photos of our wonderful Bulldogs. We encourage parents to do the same when joining us for school events. You can share pictures in this google folder. Some of these pictures will be included in our end of the year slideshow and/or the Breton Downs Yearbook.
COVID-19 Guidance
If your child tests positive for COVID-19, 5 days of isolation is recommended. Individuals may return any time during days 6-10 if their symptoms are largely resolved and fever-free without the use of medication. It is also recommended that a mask be worn on days 6-10. Each school is required to report all communicable diseases to the Kent County Health Department (KCHD). If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please notify your building administrator. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!
Supporting Absent Students
While we encourage families to plan vacations in coordination with the school calendar, we understand that absences will occur for many reasons. If your child misses school due to illness or vacation, please encourage them to work on IXL, read a good book, and write in a journal. We are unable to replicate a school day of instruction during an absence or upon the student’s return. Your child’s teacher will be sure to touch base with your child when they are back in the classroom.
Available Supports for Families
It is important that all children have access to the various opportunities offered at school including field trips, evening PTO-sponsored events, book fairs, etc. As a staff, we never want money to be a barrier to participation for a child. If your family is experiencing monetary challenges, please reach out to the classroom teacher or building principal. All information is confidential and we have options to support you and your child(ren).
East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety
At the start of this school year, you may see some of our EGR Public Safety Officers walking our grounds before and after school. They are here to observe our cross walks, meet students and families, and answer any questions you may have.
Parent/Guardian Information Night
On September 7 and 8 Breton Downs is hosting our annual Parent/Guardian Information Nights. Each grade level has a designated time on one of these evenings (listed below) for you to visit your child’s classroom and learn from his or her teacher what curriculum will be taught this year. In addition, you will learn other important information pertaining specifically to the classroom, ways you can support learning at home, and have the opportunity to have any questions answered. We look forward to having you join us!
