After Soorp Badarak, the parishioner marked the 32nd anniversary of Der Hayr's ordination to the priesthood. Congratulations Der Hayr! May God grant you many years!

Prelate Extols AYF at Opening Ceremony of Olympic Games
On Sunday, September 4, His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan, Prelate, took part in the opening ceremonies of the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) Olympic Games held in Worcester, Massachusetts), addressing the participants and the public. He was accompanied by Very Rev. Fr. Ardag Arabian, Pastor of Holy Trinity Church (Worcester, MA), Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, Pastor of St. Illuminator’s Cathedral (New York City), and Rev. Fr. Mikayel Der Khosrofian, Pastor of Soorp Asdvadzadzin Church (Whitinsville, MA). Fr. Ardag offered the opening prayer and the Prelate delivered his message to the presents. Archbishop Anoushavan greeted the great family of the AYF on behalf of the Eastern Prelacy and its Executive Council. He congratulated all participants who came from all over the country to Worcester to strengthen their bonds and renew their pledge towards their founding father, Garegin Nzhdeh, who almost nine decades ago firmly believed in the integrity and sanctity of the homeland and in the mission of the youth to preserve and continue the legacy of their forefathers.

Տօն Վերացման Սրբոյ Խաչին
Պօղոս Առաքեալի Թուղթը Գաղատացիներուն 6:14-18
Գալով ինծի, քա՛ւ լիցի որ մեր Տիրոջ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի խաչէն զատ ուրիշ բանով պարծենամ: Այդ խաչին միջոցաւ աշխարհը մեռած է այլեւս ինծի համար, ինչպէս ես մեռած եմ աշխարհին համար: Կարեւորը մարդուս թլփատուած կամ անթլփատ ըլլալը չէ, այլ՝ նոր արարած ըլլալը: Թող Աստուծոյ խաղաղութիւնն ու ողորմութիւնը ըլլան բոլոր անոնց հետ, որոնք այս սկզբունքին համաձայն կ’ապրին. բոլոր անոնց՝ որոնք իր ընտրեալ ժողովուրդը կը կազմեն:

St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians 6:14-18
May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.
From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body.

The Gospel According to John 3:13-21

Exaltation of the Holy Cross
|
|
This Sunday, September 11, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachverats), which is the last of the five Tabernacle Feasts observed by the Armenian Church during the liturgical year. The Exaltation celebrates the transformation of the cross as an instrument of punishment into a venerated symbol of life and victory. A sacred religious symbol that was now exalted and glorified.
Most Christian churches commemorate this holy day on September 14. The Armenian Church celebrates it on the Sunday closest to September 14. It is the oldest of the feasts devoted to the cross. The cross, once a means of death for criminals, became the dominant symbol of triumph over death. Christ’s apostle James, Patriarch of Jerusalem, elevated the Holy Cross during a religious ceremony while chanting the hymn, “Khachee oh Krisdos Yergeer Bakanemk,” (To Your Cross We Bow), thus accepting the cross as a symbol of salvation and an object of utmost veneration. James was later martyred in Jerusalem, and upon his grave stands the expansive Armenian monastery of St. James in Jerusalem.
There are four feasts devoted to the cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar, with the Exaltation being the most important. The other three are: Apparition of the Holy Cross; Holy Cross of Varak, and Discovery of the Cross. Each of these four holidays devoted to the Holy Cross are related to the life and the salvific work of our Lord.
The ceremony for the Exaltation begins with the decoration of the Cross with sweet basil (rehan), a sign of royalty, and also as a symbol of the living cross that is carried around the church in a procession led by the priest, and followed by deacons and altar servers. After the Bible readings, the officiating priest lifts the Cross and makes the sign of the Cross, and blesses the four corners of the world (Andastan service), asking God’s blessing and bounty for the prosperity of the Armenian Church and for the fruitfulness of the land, and all the holy places and inhabitants thereof.
The Khachveratz ceremony was prepared by Catholicos Sahag Dzoraporetsi (677-703). He also composed the hymn that is sung on this day. As with other Tabernacle Feasts, the Exaltation is preceded with a week of fasting (Monday to Friday), and followed by a Memorial Day (Merelotz). The Eve of this Feast is also celebrated (Navagadik). Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, following Memorial Day are feast days dedicated to the Holy Church.
Name day commemorations this Sunday include: Khatchadour, Khatchig, Khatcheres, Rehan, Khatchkhatoun, Khachouhi, Khatchperouhi, Khosrov, Khosrovanoush, Khrosrovitoukhd, and Nshan.

Այս Կիրակի, 11 Սեպտեմբերին, Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցին կը տօնէ Խաչվերացը, որ մեր եկեղեցւոյ հինգ տաղաւար տօներէն վերջինն է, որ կը պանծացնէ խաչի գերեվարութենէն ետք անոր փառաբանումը։
Քրիստոնեայ եկեղեցիներու մեծ մասը Սեպտեմբեր 14ին կը նշէ այս սուրբ օրը, մինչ Հայ Եկեղեցին զայն փոխադրած է ամենամօտ Կիրակին։ Քրիստոսի աշակերտներէն Յակովբոս Տեառնեղբայր առաքեալը՝ Երուսաղէմի առաջին պատրիարքը, Սուրբ Խաչը բարձրացուցած է կրօնական արարողութեան մը ընթացքին, մինչ կ՚երգէր «Խաչի քո Քրիստոս երկիր պագանեմք» շարականը, այսպէս ընդունելով խաչը իբրեւ փրկութեան խորհրդանիշ առարկայ։ Յակովբոս առաքեալը աւելի ուշ նահատակուած է Երուսաղէմի մէջ, եւ անոր գերեզմանին վրայ բարձրացած է Սրբոց Յակոբեանց լայնատարած հայոց վանքը։
Մեր տօնացոյցը խաչին նուիրուած չորս տօներ ունի, որոնցմէ ամենէն կարեւորը Խաչվերացն է։ Միւս տօներն են՝ Երեւում Սբ. Խաչի, Վարագայ Սբ. Խաչ եւ Խաչի Գիւտ։ Այս տօներէն իւրաքանչիւրը կապուած է մեր Տիրոջ կեանքին ու փրկարար գործին։
Խաչվերացի արարողութեան, Խաչը յարդարուած կ՚ըլլայ ռեհանով, ինչ որ թագաւորական նշան մըն է, բայց նաեւ խորհրդանիշ մը՝ կենդանի խաչին, որ եկեղեցւոյ շուրջ թափօրով կը տարուի։ Աստուածաշունչի ընթերցումներէն ետք, պատարագող հոգեւորականը խաչը կը բարձրացնէ եւ խաչի նշանը կը կատարէ՝ օրհնելով աշխարհի չորս ծագերը (Անդաստանի արարողութիւն), հայցելով Աստուծոյ օրհնութիւնն ու առատութիւնը՝ Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ բարգաւաճման ու հողի պտղաբերման, ինչպէս նաեւ աշխարհի բոլոր վայրերուն ու բնակիչներուն համար։
Խաչվերացի արարողութիւնը պատրաստած է Սահակ Ձորափորեցի Կաթողիկոսը (677-703), որ նաեւ յօրինած է տօնին երգուող շարականը։ Այլ տաղաւարներու պէս, Խաչվերացին կը նախորդէ պահքի շաբաթ մը եւ կը հետեւի Մեռելոցի օրը։ Այս տօնին նախօրեակն ալ (նաւակատիք) կը տօնուի։ Մեռելոցին յաջորդող Երեքշաբթի, Չորեքշաբթի եւ Հինգշաբթի օրերը տօնական են ու նուիրուած՝ Սուրբ Եկեղեցւոյ։
Այս Կիրակի յիշատակուող անուններն են՝ Խաչատուր, Խաչիկ, Խաչեր, Խաչերես, Ռեհան, Խաչուհի եւ Նշան։

Basil, a member of the mint family, was known as the “king of herbs” by ancient Greeks.
Cultivated for over 5,000 years, basil (rehan) has a long tradition in Armenian cooking and in the Armenian Church.
St. Helena (Soorp Heghine to Armenians) is believed to have discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem under a pile of debris covered with a flourishing crop of basil.
During the Exaltation of the Holy Cross each September, the processional cross is adorned with blessed basil leaves.

Monday is Memorial Day
The day after the five Tabernacle Feasts is a Memorial Day in the Armenian Liturgical Calendar. Traditionally the Divine Liturgy is celebrated on this day and the faithful go to the cemeteries where graves are blessed to honor the memory of their departed loved ones. Remembering the dead is an important ritual for the living. In a sense it is an act of faith and love, which may contribute to understanding and healing.
