Director's Welcome

Ron Hackney with ECORD's Gilbert Camoin [image credit Nadine Hallman]September has been a busy month of travels and connecting with our international colleagues. Following a fruitful trip to the annual Chikyu IODP Board meeting in Japan late last month, I headed to the US to attend the IODP Forum at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, then on to Aix-en-Provence in France for the ECORD Facility Board Meeting, and finally Germany to meet with ICDP. Though international travel remains challenging, attending these meetings in person – joined online by Sarah Kachovich, Stuart Henrys and Agathe Lisé-Pronovost – has been highly beneficial in planning the future of scientific ocean drilling. I also took the opportunity to share ANZIC’s challenges and plans moving forward, including our evolving strategy to partner with AuScope to secure long-term support for geoscience infrastructure for subsurface sampling.
 
While we await further clarity on the continuation of NSF support for JOIDES Resolution beyond IODP’s current phase, Europe and Japan are progressing plans for a joint program beyond 2024. We’re working closely with them to identify our place in an expanded Mission Specific Platform concept. Closer to home, the ANZIC Office has met with the Australian Antarctic Division – quite timely given ECORD's desire to utilise RSV Nuyina as a Mission Specific Platform – and is engaging with the Australian geoscience community to collect thoughts and ideas centred on ‘virtual expeditions’.
 
Finally, I'd like to congratulate Rob McKay on his recent appointment to the JOIDES Resolution Facility Board, and our upcoming 2022 and 2023 expeditioners. If you're keen to join an upcoming voyage, calls for Expeditions 401 and 402 in 2024 are now open – see below for details.

Expedition Call 401: Mediterranean-Atlantic Gateway Exchange

Applications close 1 December 2022

Scientists from ANZIC member institutions are invited to join the Science Party for IODP Expedition 401: Mediterranean-Atlantic Gateway Exchange, taking place from 10 December 2023 – 9 February 2024 onboard JOIDES Resolution.

Expedition 401 is part of the Investigating Miocene Mediterranean-Atlantic Gateway Exchange (IMMAGE) amphibious drilling proposal, designed to recover a complete record of Atlantic-Mediterranean exchange from its late Miocene inception to its current configuration and map the effect of changes in gateway geometry on global ocean circulation and associated heat transport and climate. Drilling will sample the seafloor up to a subbottom depth of 1277 metres, recovering Miocene sediments expected to date between 5.33 and 7.2 million years old.

Expedition Call 402: Tyrrhenian Continent-Ocean Transition

Applications are now open for scientists from ANZIC member organisations to join IODP Expedition 402: Tyrrhenian Continent-Ocean Transition, sailing on JOIDES Resolution from 9 February – 8 April 2024.

Expedition 402 will investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of a continent-ocean transition (COT), from breakup to robust magmatism and subsequent mantle exhumation with closely time-related magmatism. Drilling will be focused on the Tyrrhenian Basin – the youngest basin of the western Mediterranean Sea formed in the late Miocene to recent. Material will be recovered across six sites to explore the kinematics of the opening, the crust and mantle deformation mechanisms, and the relationship of melting products to the exhumed mantle.

Special seminar: Dr Carmine Wainman



Dr Carmine Wainman joined Geoscience Australia in November 2021 as a Basin Analyst following more than eight years at the University of Adelaide, where he remains a Visiting Research
Fellow in geoscience. In this seminar, he will share his expertise in expertise in sedimentology, stratigraphy, palynology and basin modelling, with a focus on his post-cruise research after participating in IODP Expedition 369: Australia Cretaceous Climate and Tectonics. Specifically, he will share how multi-disciplinary analysis of the core has revealed a rich, comprehensive story of marginal marine settings in the southern high latitudes and the response of the Bight Basin to the Cretaceous Greenhouse.

Last call for IODP Proposals

Proposals are currently being accepted as below until 3 October 2022:
  •  Mission-Specific Platforms: MSP expeditions are planned to operate once a year to drill/core targets that are inaccessible by the other facilities (e.g. shallow water, enclosed seas, ice-covered seas) in any ocean basin until the end of 2024. After that date, MSP expeditions might be implemented in all drilling environments. New and revised MSP proposals for any ocean basin are welcomed.
  • Chikyu: New Complementary Project Proposals (CPPs) are encouraged, but other new riser and riserless proposals for the Chikyu may not be submitted at this time. Revisions and addendums to any proposal that is already in the system will be accepted.
  • JOIDES Resolutionrevisions to proposals already under consideration by SEP and the facility boards can still be (re)submitted.

AILAF success for NZ scientists

Congratulations to New Zealand's latest successful applicants for IODP/ICDP Legacy Analytical Funding (AILAF) grants:
  • Agnes Reyes (GNS): 'Cycling of high-temperature fluids venting at Brothers Volcano revealed by microscopic studies of mineralogy, corrosion products and fluids trapped in crystals'.
  • Christina Riesselman (University of Otago): 'Calibrating the connection: Using the Southern Ocean’s most highly-resolved Quaternary sediment record to illuminate the relationship between primary production and Antarctic climate'.
  • Christopher Moy (University of Otago): 'Reconstructing millennial-scale coupled atmosphere-ice sheet dynamics in the south Pacific during the Pleistocene'.

ANZIC at ECORD Summer School

ECORD's recent Summer School focused on sea level, climate variability, and coral reefs was held at the University of Bremen in Germany from 5–16 September. Australia and New Zealand were represented by two students: Josie Frazer [second row (kneeling), first from left] from University of Otago and Victor Piedrahita Velez [front row, second from right] from ANU.

Outreach: Teaching for the Future



On Monday 26 September, ANZIC's Dr Sarah Kachovich presented a two-hour workshop entitled 'The Future of Teaching' at CONASTA 69: Science Revealed to science educators, all keen to explore marine geoscience and what scientific ocean drilling can teach us about oceans, climate and Earth systems.

Participants were guided through the latest in science, a selection of curated resources aligned with the senior curriculum, and an overview of how the work happening in ANZIC and IODP
and in organisations like AuScope, Australian Antarctic Division and Australian Science Innovations supports cross-disciplinary research and learning. They also enjoyed a live ship-to-shore video call with Expedition 397T, taking a tour of JOIDES Resolution and learning how they can connect their students with IODP science and scientists.

Engage with upcoming expeditions

With so many ANZIC scientists scheduled to sail onboard JOIDES Resolution in 2022 and 2023, there are lots of opportunities to connect with the science as it happens and get a taste of what life is like at sea. During expeditions you can book free live ship-to-shore video broadcasts, where the expedition's Outreach Officer will take you and your students, visitors or community groups on a tour of the impressive vessel, talk to the scientists and operators, and see the science in action.

Calls can be tailored to individual needs, from connecting with curriculum-based learning to speaking with a particular researcher or team. Bookings are first come, first served
