Mahuru | September 2022
Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to our September pānui—there's lots happening in our sector at the moment, and below you will see a bunch of training opportunities available to you, all kinds of events, and a range of job opportunities that might be the perfect fit for someone you know!

It's been a pleasure to attend some of our member groups' AGMs over the last month or so, and hear what is going on in your organisations. I'm sure there will be some more this month too. PNCSC's AGM is at the end of this month—12pm, Thursday 29 September at Hancock Community House. Formal notice and agenda will be sent out in the coming weeks. If you are interested in standing for the Collective (CSC's board), please get in touch with me, and I will make sure you get a nomination form.

Top of mind for us is the local body elections coming up very soon. Voting opens Friday 16 September and closes at noon, Saturday 8 October. We are hosting a Meet the Candidates event on Monday 12 September 6pm-8pm at Te Manawa Museum, so I hope you are able to come along and take the opportunity to meet Mayoral and Te Hirawanui general ward candidates. No RSVP necessary.

Many will have already registered for Tonic Conference, which is happening here in Palmy on 19-20 October, but if you haven't it's not too late! More info on their website. This is a great opportunity to invest in your staff without the added costs of travel and accommodation!

We are also hosting the Social Wellbeing Forum on Friday 28 October, 9am-12:30pm. The Social Wellbeing Forum is a key opportunity for us as a sector to make our voice heard and the discussions at the forum will be compiled into a report which will be used to shape decision making over the next period of time. Please save the date in your calendar and keep any eye on your inbox next week as we will be sending out some more information, and a survey to help us narrow down the big topics that the sector wants to discuss.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) is coming up 12-18 September. We'll be doing some activities with our neighbours around Hancock Community House, and I encourage you and your teams to get involved too! Have a look at reomaori.co.nz for some great ideas and resources about how to celebrate and learn some reo Māori in your workplace or at home.

Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the CSC team if we can assist you in any way.

Ngā mihi,
Tim

Kia orana
It’s the time of the year when Annual General Meetings are taking place, and I’d like to thank those who have extended invitations to me to attend these.  My team and I will do our best to be at as many as we can.

Thanks also to those who have stepped in and taken up new roles in your organisation, as well as those whose service has come to an end – your time and contribution is very much appreciated.

Local government elections are almost upon us as well, and this is an opportunity for people to have their say in the running of our city.

I encourage you to learn about each of the candidates, and have a think about who has served the interests of the community sector when placing your vote.

Succession Planning
19 September, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Hancock Community House
$20 for CSC members/$30 others

Succession planning is the process of making sure your organisation is prepared to successfully continue. This workshop, facilitated by Megan Thorn from Exult, focuses on three different types of succession planning: strategic, leadership and emergency, across both governance and operational teams.

The workshop shares practical processes for covering all three, and for building succession planning into a process for the organisation, as opposed to an event.

We share ideas and stories that help organisations discover:
  • Why Succession Planning is essential for non-profit organisations, regardless of what stage of the journey they are at.
  • What things need to be considered in developing a succession plans.
  • Who needs one? And what should be in it?
  • Ideas for raising the idea of Succession Planning as a positive process for the long-term sustainability.
  • Ideas for building a culture of succession in the organisation.

Attracting Donations
23 September, 10am-12:30pm
Hancock Community House
Free

Presented by Helen King, an experienced grants writer and communicator who has worked in the local for-community sector since 2006.

Donations can be an important stream of income in helping organisations thrive and grow, but sometimes it is hard to know where to start and, once you have, how to sustain donor engagement and interest.

This discursive and interactive workshop will look at why donations are important, how to begin the process of attracting donations, and, importantly, how to tell our stories in a way that connects with people who want to give.

Social Wellbeing Forum

Save the date: the 2022 Social Wellbeing Forum will be on 28 October, 9am-12:30pm. Last held in 2019, the SWF is an opportunity to take stock of the most prevalent social needs in our community right now, and will produce a report which we hope will inform and influence policy and programming across local government, central government agencies and the social sector. Held regularly since 2007, this will be the first SWF since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Our team is currently conducting visits and interviews with various community groups, and we will be reaching out over the next few weeks to seek your input as we prepare for the forum.

Managers’ Forums are a space to share and grow your knowledge with other managers in the community and social sector. Facilitated by Jude Bartlett, each forum will have some time to share ‘what’s on top’ for you, a short talk on a topic, and a group discussion about that topic. Forums are on the last Wednesday of each month, 2pm-3pm at Hancock Community House. Email Tim Kendrew if you would like to be kept up to date.

We were able to start this 10 week programme this week and our first lesson was on computer basics. This programme has been supported by Pub Charity who funded the new HP Envy laptops that we provide to attendees if they aren't able to bring their own device.

The lesson resources we use are provided by the Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa. Our 3 volunteer tutors who take the lessons are sometimes adjusting the lesson to suit the needs of the attendees.

Thanks to one of our super volunteers Umesh who took our first lesson and we received some great feedback. “I loved the course!” “I felt nervous going to the lesson, but you made me feel relaxed and comfortable”.
