Meet the district community engagement team
Since July 2022, Caleb Roberts and Yuriana Coronado have joined the Community Relations & Communications’ engagement team to focus on developing new partnerships while enhancing its current relationships. The outreach team will work with the Community Relations & Communications Director to plan and implement outreach programs as it relates to the Student Investment Account (SIA) community engagement initiative and overall district community engagement strategy. It’s almost time for a new school year
Next week, nearly 40,000 students will return to classrooms across Salem and Keizer for the 2022-23 school year. This next year will bring many new opportunities for students, staff and community. Welcome back, Salem-Keizer.

Free breakfast and lunch all year for SKPS students
Salem-Keizer Public Schools is participating in a federal program available as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program, Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). For the 2022-23 school year, a nutritious breakfast and lunch are available to all SKPS students enrolled in virtual, hybrid or in-person classes at no charge to families. Superintendent Perry announces retirement following the 2022-23 school year
Superintendent Christy Perry announced her plan to retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year. “In life there are seasons, and as I enter my 19th year as an Oregon superintendent, I believe it’s time to plan for the next season – my next season and the next season for SKPS,” says Perry. Superintendent Perry will continue to play an active role in this school year as well as efforts to engage the larger community around common ground as it relates to student achievement and success. SKPS leaders visit Anahuac Farm
Capaces Leadership Institute and the Anahuac Team invited leaders from across the district to Anahuac Farm for a tour to learn about the cultivation of the land and production of seeds native to their indigenous communities. The group learned about the history of the Anahuac Farm and culture and were given an opportunity to enjoy traditional foods like Bolillo (a traditional, savory bread) and Atole (a traditional corn- and masa-based beverage). Salem-Keizer community provides bags of hope for students
Many thanks to Intel and all community partners involved in providing bags of hope to students for delivering over 1,500 bags to elementary school students who attended school this summer. Each bag was personalized with a handwritten note and positive message of hope. Also included in the bag was a STEM activity for students to complete. Students are grateful for the kindness and support of district partners.

New SKPS learning spaces thanks to the 2018 bond
School staff and students at nine Salem-Keizer schools will be welcomed back this fall into brand new and improved spaces, thanks to the community’s support of the 2018 bond. More than a dozen additional schools started construction at the beginning of summer 2022, and many are scheduled to be ready for students early in the fall of 2023. Students are excited about the improvements. Hear from three third-grade students at Pringle sharing their excitement and thoughts about bond-funded improvements for the Panthers.

SKPS Safety Systems - Working closely with community partners
Safety and well-being of all staff, students and community members at SKPS facilities is the district’s priority. SKPS has a robust, community-connected and nationally-recognized system to proactively improve school safety and respond quickly.
