Visit by GLYC - 3rd September

A massive thank you to brand new members Lauren Baker and Tony Doolan who spearheaded the catering efforts for the recent visit.  They were capably assisted by Peter Bull and Buster Hooper on the BBQ, and Robyn Hooper and Anni Waller in the kitchen.  Thank you to all volunteers that helped make an enjoyable visit for the 12 boats that sailed from Paynesville.  There was a nice turnout of MYC members to greet our visitors.

Flagpole Works
Another thank you to Dick Whittaker and Ted Smith for their persistence and hard work in repairing the flagpole - it has been a long running job but the results are excellent!
CLUB SAILING
KEPPER WORKING BEE
A very important aspect of our club sailing program is our rescue boat, Kepper - without a well maintained boat, there would be no racing out on the Lakes.  Volunteers are needed to get Kepper ready for the season. This involves a clean and anti-foul so the date will be weather dependant.  If you are able to help, please call Max Young on 0408 320 743.

JUNIOR SQUAD | MENS’ LEARN TO SAIL  | SHE SAILS
JUNIOR SQUAD program
Now the weather is starting to warm up, we are really looking forward to the start of our 2022/2023 sailing season, which is set to start on Sunday 9th October 2022 at 9am. This season will see Charlie & Wayne leave Cadets behind as they look at improving their skills on the new 420’s (by the way they are looking for crew if anyone is interested?). We have many experienced crew members now looking to skipper a Cadet this season. Charlie’s old crew Arlo is keen to take on a skipper role, as is Jaden who crewed last season for Kaden. We have a good amount of young ones coming through to crew for these new skippers, and anticipate having 7-8 Cadets out on the water which is fantastic. This season we would like to focus on getting them right up to speed and ready to compete. Kaden will be excited to bring his newly acquired Cadet along – it is called Pandemic, but hopefully this year will be smooth sailing with no lockdowns! Sara & Emily will be back & super competitive, this time sailing on ‘Hacker’ – Harry & Elsie Pearce’s Cadet. It really is set to be an exciting season and we look forward to seeing great progression and increased confidence.

This Friday night (9th Sep) at the Metung Hotel, MYC Junior Squad are running the Community Raffle with all funds raised going to Junior Squad. We would love lots of our Junior Squad families to come along so the kids can help sell tickets. Any other members that would like to join us & support us, to come along from 5.30pm. A great chance to socialise, have a drink & a meal at the pub – support the pub that supports our club in fundraising for Junior Squad!

Commodores Cup – All of our Junior Squad families are invited to come along to the Commodores Cup on Sat 1st October for the start of the sailing season. There may be the opportunity for some Juniors to sail down with some adults on big boats – if your kids are interested, please contact Eagle and let him know. Everyone is welcome to come by boat or drive around to Johnsonville boat ramp/river reserve for the BYO BBQ.

SheSails Conference – we encourage all of our Junior girls to come along & be part of the SheSails National Conference & get together at the club on Wednesday 5th October 6pm.

There will be no Junior Squad session over the Melbourne Cup long weekend (30 October) due to coaches being away. Although, the 14ft skiffs & VX’s will be here for their regattas and weather permitting, are keen to take some of the more experienced juniors for a sail on these exciting boats. Please let Dean or Eagle know the week before if your child is interested so this can be arranged.

Canteen Volunteer Roster – every Junior Squad family will be expected to volunteer adults to help out in the Junior Squad Canteen. A roster will be arranged and distributed prior to the start of the season.

On water Volunteers: we need you! Our coaches are all volunteers and can’t run Junior Sailing without more parent volunteers. We love having parents involved and the feedback we get is that our volunteers love seeing the juniors progress. Parents with a boat licence are required to help out driving the rescue boats. Some of our parents are already experienced in this and help out with some coaching aswell. We are very grateful for their time. We will need to create a roster for volunteers out on the water, as of course, there are always days people are away & lots of volunteers mean we can make a roster work. Please contact Eagle 0419 122 969 or Dean 0400 181 440 to volunteer or if you have any queries.

Off water Volunteers
  • Maintenance & repairs to Junior Squad & Women in Sailing boats – please contact Eagle & Dean if you can help out prior to/during sailing season.
  • Stop/Go people – we always need people to stop traffic whilst the kids are crossing the road to launch their boats and on return. Another Roster!
  • Launching & Retrieving rescue boats – to have the rescue boats put in the water & ready for our coaches & volunteers, so they do not have to leave the club and can focus on teaching the kids, helping to rig boats & supervision. A perfect role for some of our senior club members. Thank you to Peter Kane who has already volunteered to help – but again, we need more helpers. Please contact Eagle & Dean if you can help.

The International 420 Australian National Championship is being hosted at Metung Yacht Club from the 2-6 January 2023. We are very excited to have two 420’s at the club now for our youth sailors. The pictures above are Wayne and Dean Smith putting one of the 420’s through its paces.  Wayne Smith and Charlie Edwards are looking for crew that are keen to train and compete in the National Champs with them.  Thank you to Buster Hooper who has kindly volunteered to coach our MYC 420 teams. Hopefully we can get them up to speed to be competitive in the coming regatta and then go on to compete further afield.

Eagle & Dean

We need your help to make this season a success.
MENS ‘LEARN TO SAIL’ COURSE

Due to recent interest, we are considering a Mens’ “Learn to Sail” course this season, which will run alongside our Junior Squad on a Sunday morning -  with theory, on land practice & rigging then progressing to learn to sail a Laser. We are seeking expressions of interest from interested parties. Please phone or SMS Dean Smith on 0400181440 to register your interest.
We would like to invite all of our MYC sailing girls & ladies to join us at the club for the SheSails National Conference Event on Wednesday 5th October 2022 - which will be delivered via webinar and will be designed to champion female involvement in sailing and empower attendees to reach their full potential.
This year’s inspirational guest speaker line up includes:
Jessica Watson OAM, SheSails Ambassador, sailor and pioneer who will discuss her experiences; how she had a dream, worked hard at it, and proved that anything really is possible.
Nina Curtis, Olympian and Trailblazer who will discuss her journey that has taken her to the Olympics and onto being the first female on the Australian SailGP team.
This event will also be a great chance to get the girls & ladies together socially at the start of the sailing season.
If you can’t make it in person to the club, you can still watch the conference online, the webinar event is FREE however registrations are essential.

Women in Sailing!

If you’re anything like me, Winter has provided me with a couple of extra kilos and a massive hankering to get back on the water!!!  As the days warm up, it’s time to dust off those runners, get fit again and prepare yourself for another season of Women in Sailing.  If you’re new to the club, or have never tried sailing before, never fear - there's no better way to improve your water skills - while having heaps of fun and making lifelong friends than jumping in a boat and giving it a crack and having a laugh!

This year’s Women’s in Sailing will kick off on Sunday November 6th at 10am.  The first session will be in the classroom, focusing on dusting off our newly acquired skill sets from last season and re-acquainting ourselves with the difference between a headsail and mainsail and our knots!  Then it’s back on the water😊 .  My partner Marcus will also be helping me this year, so that we can hopefully have 2 groups of sailors.  One group learning second level skills and learning more about racing, and the other starting with the basics.  Of course, this all depends on numbers, so please, gather your friends and lets get as many women down there as we can.

If you have questions, please call me on 0418 342235.   Oh – and before I forget!  Lock in 6pm - Wed Oct 5th in your diaries for the SheSails Conference outlined above!

Looking forward to a FAB season on the water!
Sarah (Skippy) xox
