Fun Fact

Hiccups are 'a relic of our evolutionary transition from water to land'. A sharp intake of air followed by a closing of the windpipe, essentially the process of gill breathing, hiccups are 'a hand-me-down from amphibians that breathe with both lungs and gills'. Humans also evolved a hiccup inhibitor nerve to stop us from hiccuping all the time, but occasionally we still forget that we're no longer a frog.
