$31.5 million to boost COVID-19 research

Fourteen projects will share $31.5 million from the MRFF’s 2021 COVID-19 Treatment Access and Public Health Activities grant opportunity to improve our understanding of COVID-19, find new ways to treat the disease, understand its longer-term impacts, and better manage it in the future. Funding is from the MRFF’s Coronavirus Research Response.

Testing solutions to prevent male suicide

Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australian males aged 15-49, with research indicating this could be because fewer males reach out when they are not travelling so well.

The Buoy Project, led by Professor Jane Pirkis from the University of Melbourne, is testing 7 suicide prevention programs for boys and men, such as MATES in Manufacturing, and Men in Mind, to see how effective they are.

Fighting antibiotic resistant superbug outbreaks with artificial intelligence

Antibiotic resistant superbugs threaten to undo many of the gains of modern medicine. They cause previously curable infectious diseases to become untreatable and spread, causing severe infections and death.

Professor Anton Peleg at The Alfred Hospital believes he could improve patient outcomes if he could quickly assess all available data about the patient and the infecting bacteria. However, with 80 to 120,000 data points occurring during every patient hospital admission, this is more data than a single doctor can process in their brain.

Read how the SuperbugAI Flagship is harnessing the power of new technologies to combine data from different information systems and analyse patterns to predict outcomes in Using artificial intelligence to stop antibiotic resistant superbug outbreaks in our hospitals.

This MRFF Project was supported by the MRFF’s Genomics Health Futures Mission.

Become a MRFF Grant Assessment Committee member

Would you like to support the MRFF in identifying high-impact projects that can deliver real outcomes to all Australians? You can by becoming a MRFF Grant Assessment Committee (GAC) member.

Decisions on which projects should receive MRFF grant funding are based on the assessments of independent GACs, comprising national and international assessors who consider applications against technical and non-technical assessment criteria, with a strong focus on impact and value.

Find out how you can register your interest on the NHMRC website.
