Raising Canada 2022: Inequity and the Impacts of COVID-19

Children First Canada has released its annual Raising Canada report that tracks the top 10 threats to childhood in Canada. This year's report highlights how the pandemic has amplified and accelerated the top 10 threats facing kids across the country. The data also reveals that equity-deserving children and youth are facing the greatest impacts of the pandemic  including young First Nations, Métis and Inuit children, people from racialized communities, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and young people with disabilities.

From coast to coast to coast, many children do not make it to their 18th birthday: The infant mortality rate in Canada is higher than in most wealthy countries, and preventable injuries, suicide and homicide are among the leading causes of death for children and youth. These devastating statistics are too alarming to be ignored.

Every child deserves to survive and thrive.

Raising Canada 2022 underscores that children are in crisis across Canada. They continue to feel the impacts of the pandemic, along with climate change and inflation. Yet governments at all levels are not prioritizing Canada’s youngest citizens – who represent nearly a quarter of the Canadian population and 100 per cent of our future.

It's time to make big, bold investments in kids.

Did you know that over 1.3 million children in Canada live in poverty, and about 1 in 3 kids are at risk of going to school hungry? Despite these alarming statistics, Canadians generally perceive that children are well cared for and their rights are upheld. Check out our infographic for more facts about the top 10 threats facing kids, inequity and the impacts of COVID-19.
