Simultaneous interpretation EN-DE

This time, under the slogan #MakeHerCount in times of crisis – progressive answers to gender blindness we will focus on the disproportionate impact of different challenges - from the economic, health & climate crisis, to wars, and the state of democracies - on women. For us, it is clear we can only tackle those issues if we progress on gender equality as a global goal, but also if we look at current challenges through an intersectional gender lens, and by including women in every solution to these crises. Therefore, with our distinguished speakers and the audience, we will analyze how we can #MakeHerCount in times of crisis. Our keynote speakers will join two panels of experts and members of our political family to answer these questions. We hope you will join us for this important debate!

You can find all the information through the event application, which will be updated regularly. If you cannot join us in Berlin, follow the livestream on PES Women Facebook page

Agenda:

14:30 – Registration and arrival of participants (Hans-Jochen Vogel Saal)

15:10 – Welcoming

15:45 – Panel 1: No crisis is gender blind: All crises, no matter their nature, affect women and men differently. Women are disproportionately affected by crises, mainly due to the fact that these exacerbate inequalities which already existed beforehand. Nevertheless, gender is rarely, if ever, taken into account in crisis response, in long-term planning or in prevention planning. Therefore, although some crises pass or are solved, the issues that women face are worse than before, and the next crises will exacerbate them further. We believe women’s voices and gender equality need to be mainstreamed into every solution to the global problems we all face, as well as those to come. This is the only way to eradicate inequalities: to tackle the particularities of crises from a gender perspective, both in the short and long term. Additionally, we also see the need to address certain gender inequalities more urgently, because women are dying daily in the hands of men, are trafficked, or denied access to abortion, but still there is too little action taken to revert the shadow pandemic of gender-based violence.
  • Q&A from the audience
16:45 – Coffee Break

17:15 – Panel 2: Gender equality as a priority – not an afterthought: Gender equality is recognised at many levels as a top priority. However, on a practical level, it is still seen as a “women’s topic” – we only need to see the small numbers of men who work on equality portfolios – and moreover, it is seen as an issue to deal with whenever “we have the time for it”. Too often, we hear that it is important to work towards gender equality, but it is still put at the back burner. Too often, there are other priorities. We refute the idea that there is a wrong time to talk about gender equality. Firstly, because we are still lagging behind on progress, but more concerning, we are witnessing attacks and backlash from conservative and right-wing forces. Secondly, because as we have seen, all crises have a gender component which we must address holistically. This means that focusing on gender issues, even in the midst of a crisis, will lead to fewer gendered impacts, and it will contribute to reducing the consequences of any future crises.
  • Q&A from the audience
18:15 – Closing

19:00 – Reception in Willy Brandt House Atrium
