Who Do You Say I Am?

Mark 8:29 says, “And he asked them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Peter answered him, 'You are the Christ!'"

This dialogue with the disciples helps us get to the core of the matter. The question on Jesus’ mind was not who the people around the disciples thought he was. The real question Jesus was after was who the disciples thought he was. It is really the only question for us too. Who do you say that Jesus is?

As you consider that, let me share this quote from C.S. Lewis in his book, Mere Christianity: "I am trying there to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about him: 'I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either Jesus was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill him as a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

It seems that in our day people want to take this part of Jesus, and that part of Jesus, but leave out the parts that they don’t like. It is almost as if Jesus is diced up and put on a buffet line. We pass through the buffet taking the parts we like and leaving the unpopular parts behind. We build our own particular Jesus to our taste and liking.

I think that is why Jesus kept reminding everyone to “Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.” A faithful life is not one or the other. We don’t get to choose. Loving God will naturally lead to loving others. We don’t need to resist the work of God in our lives, we need to embrace it.

If we will seek first the kingdom of God, we might find that what matters is not what we want, but what God wants in us.

 Blessings,
