Pastor’s Ponderings

September, 2022

Beloved Friends –

As I write this, it’s a hot August day, and I’m watching a few puffy clouds roll through a brilliantly blue sky.  I love warm weather, so I’m revelling in these last few weeks of summer.  However, Labor Day is just about upon us, and soon we’ll begin a new school year – and life all over will start to move to a faster pace, as it typically does every year around this time – except, of course, for the last couple of years.

Ever since COVID made its presence felt in our world, we’ve all felt as if we were in some sort of suspended animation – as if our lives were, at least in part, on hold. Thanks be to God, during the course of this very strange time, we have learned how to live with a pandemic.  We’ve learned what precautions we need to take.  Our Lord has blessed us, giving doctors and other medical personnel so much more knowledge, and so many more tools to use, so now COVID is much less lethal for most people.

We will always mourn for those we lost during the terrible early days of the disease, and we will never forget the lessons we have learned – not just about COVID, but about how, despite the fragility of our mortal lives, God sees us through even the most stressful times.  We will remain vigilant,  and we will continue to take the steps necessary to insure our safety -- but many of us are starting to acknowledge that it’s now time for us to come out of hibernation.

And there is no doubt that it’s time for the church to get back into full swing – both the Christian church as a whole, and also our congregation.  The world is in desperate need of what Jesus offers us from His abundance: salvation from sin, a source of unending love, a vision of eternal life, and a plan for the kingdom-building that God wants us to accomplish on earth.

At WHUMC, we are going to act on that divine plan.  Part of this will involve reviving programs that have made our church such a distinctive place in the past.  For example, we’ll be re-starting our Monday Morning Mission, to help those within our community who are in need.  We’ll be making our food drive a year-round event, since food insecurity doesn’t go away when the summer comes to a close.  And we’ll be bringing back our puppet ministry, as a means of making learning about the gospel fun for our kids – and for the kid who lives in every adult.

Of course, we’re not only going to bring back things we used to do; we’ll also be exploring new ways to make WHUMC the vital and vibrant place we all want it to be.  We’ll be extending our evangelism in new directions, so that we may carry out Christ’s command to spread the Good News of the gospel and grow our church community.  We’ll be expanding worship opportunities with an exciting series of Sunday night programs that we hope will reinvigorate our faith, and expand our understanding of what worship can be.  These new forms of worship will include a greater emphasis on the arts, which can shed such a powerful light on how the love of God works in our lives.  And there will be more new activities by which we will channel the love of Almighty God and help the Lord to touch more and more lives.

All of this is the result of ideas that members of the congregation have brought forth; truly, they will be the fruit of our whole community working together.  It's an exciting time to be part of the WHUMC family!

In the midst of all the brainstorming and planning, I have had the chance to start the process of getting to know many of you.  My profound thanks to the SPRC for organizing the small group meet-and-greets that have allowed me to find out so much about your lives, your work with the church, and the long and wonderful history of WHUMC.  If I haven’t yet had the opportunity to have an extended chat with you, please feel free to make an appointment and come in so that we can find out more about one another.  Truly, working with everyone here has already become one of the greatest privileges I’ve enjoyed in my life, and the prospect of doing God’s work in communion with all of you reminds me of how blessed I am to be here.

As the summer rolls into autumn, our congregation enters a new chapter.  May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ strengthen, guide and inspire us, and may we feel the great energy of the Holy Spirit running through all that we do!

Blessings,
Pastor Bill

What is Coffee Hour?

After an extended period of time, coffee hour after the service has been resumed. This gives individuals the opportunity to enjoy fellowship while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea and a snack.
Coffee is prepared and set up by Karen Loveland. The large coffee pots will be emptied and washed out by Pastor Bill. Paper plates, bowls, cups and napkins as well as sugar, diet sweetener, etc., are provided by the church. Baked goods such as cookies, pastry, cupcakes and cakes are provided by the church and stored in the kitchen freezer.

The process of hosting a coffee hour has been simplified to encourage people to participate.

The coffee hour host provides –

A large container of lemonade, or fruit punch.
A healthy snack such as fruit or goldfish crackers.
A gluten free snack such as popcorn.
Half and half creamer.
The host is responsible for set up and clean up.

Seasoned coffee hour hosts will be more than happy to show new hosts where coffee hour supplies are kept.

A signup sheet will be outside the kitchen. Please note if you wish to have help.

Hi Church Family!

September is a very busy month, but we still have to eat!  Please see the following flyer to find a way to eat AND make a contribution to the Friendship Service Center where I am blessed to spend my days.  A whole 20% of their sales that day goes to the FSC to provide services to people experiencing homelessness!    AND, the owner says they will be serving their "Fair Food", including Apple Fritters after Labor Day.  I love apple fritters!

Peace with Justice!

An ice cream social was held in the shade of the trees on church grounds. Seven adults and five children attended the event o

PUMPKIN FESTIVAL

Saturday, October 22 from 11:00 to 4:00

Our Pumpkin Festival is just weeks away, and of course that means our Annual Silent Auction, always a popular event.

We are currently seeking donations for the auction, which is being held online. If you are able to secure a donation please contact me at
grammy2drewski@yahoo.com, by phone 860 523-8017, or drop it off in the church office to my attention.

We have a number of beautiful handmade items from our Harvest Fair available to sell in the craft area. All of the items are priced, but we need a couple of folks to set up the tables, sell the merchandise, and pack up what hasn't sold at the end of the day. Why not grab a friend and spend the day enjoying the fellowship of the Pumpkin Festival and help us out by selling some of our beautiful handmade things.

The Food Drive will continue through Labor Day, and we're also accepting gift cards to Staples, Walmart, and Target to help students who are unable to afford the necessary school supplies. We're also accepting checks made out to "The Town That Cares" to support the "Back To School" effort.

In Christ's Service,

JAM News
September 2022

Greetings JAM Families,
This month we began each session with reflecting about what we are grateful for.  My hope from this exercise is to have children realize the importance of gratitude in their lives and that they have many people, situations, and things to be grateful for.  We call this: Gratitude is Attitude. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 it is stated
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
My hope for all adults is to daily tell their children “I am grateful to God, for you.” One of our favorite videos on gratitude is
This past month our topics have been:
- Jesus fixes what is broken
- It’s our job to follow Jesus
- Trusting Jesus when life gets difficult
- Jesus doesn’t leave anyone out and neither should we

Families, JAM sessions are created around the same weekly scripture you hear during service. Please connect with your children around the scripture.

WHUMC Youth Group

The Youth Group enjoyed a pizza party with Pastor Bill last month. We had a chance to meet the new pastor and ask him questions, to say goodbye to seniors leaving for college, and to welcome new middle school students.

High School and Middle School youth will be meeting on the first and third Sunday in September at 9:30 am before service for a bible study.
For October, we'll meet on Sunday evenings in the pumpkin patch - time to be announced.

We'll be planning a fall hike and other events - dates to be determined.
New youth are always welcome and kids can invite a friend. If new to the group, please send Mary & Linda your email for group updates. We know the schedule is tight for this age group, but they might be free for some of the events! If wanted, please also provide kids/parents cell numbers for text updates.
