PASA End-of-Summer Summer News

On Wednesday, August 24 PASA staff gathered together at the idyllic and welcoming Corliss-Carrington House in Providence for an afternoon of inspiration, cooperation and fun. We welcomed new team members and explored the possibilities of the new school year, while delving into the mission, vision and possibilities PASA embraces.

Throughout the day we reflected on our own individual values, and how we see ourselves in the eyes of our peers the community. As we meditated on this challenging exercise, positive words appeared on small scraps of paper that were shared with the group. The most repeated values were compassion, honesty, and respect - words which speak genuinely about our team.

Similar terms were reflected when the team was asked to ponder the values of PASA. Equity, quality, and integrity were enthusiastically proposed, alongside respect, inclusion, and community. Our PASA team seeks to build on all of these adjectives every day, to create a community of trust and success for the youth of Providence, and amongst our own team.

The PASA team is ready to begin the new school year with enthusiasm and energy.

Read on for more good news from PASA.

All the best,

Ann Durham
Executive Director

End of Summer Celebration

The last day of AfterZone summer camp came with a splash at the Latham Pool at the Boys & Girls Club of Providence - Fox Point. Swimmers enjoyed a friendly day of competition as they raced, dove, and challenged themselves and each other. Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence for a great summer of partnership; we can't wait to continue our work together with the Clubs for swim teams next season.

Good News

Learn about the All Course Network (ACN)

PASA recently finished up six weeks of summer ACN programming! This summer PASA's partners offered three courses through our ACN networks: Making Money Moves (Young Voices), Teen Data for Good (PPL), and Explore Design (Down City Design). Participating high school youth engaged in meaningful programming throughout the summer, and ended the credit-bearing courses with showcases that allowed them to highlight the deep and engaging educational experiences these programs offered.

Our Hub high school program provided incoming freshmen at 360 High School an opportunity to get oriented with their new school. Incoming freshmen participated in our Wolfpack Academy in August, where they engaged in a three day camp designed for them to build relationships with their peers, get acclimated to their new school building, and to give them an opportunity to get to know teachers and school administrators.

New Team Members

PASA is pleased to introduce Airine Alves, Dana DeMaire, and Kaila Acheson as new team members. These talented and dedicated professionals are ready to embrace the new school year, and contribute their enthusiasm for youth engagement and leadership through quality programming.

Airine is the new AfterZone Site Coordinator at DelSesto Middle School. Airine earned her B.S. in Business Administration from Rhode Island College (RIC), as well as a minor in studio art. She is passionate about painting and photography, and she is enthusiastic about contributing her talent and creativity to her role at DelSesto. Airine says that she is “looking forward to making a positive difference in the lives of the youth we serve, and working in a diverse community with youth in a creative setting.”

Dana, Hub Coordinator at Hope High School, is also an alumna of RIC, graduating with a degree in Youth Development, a minor in Psychology, with a concentration in Social Emotional Safety in Youth & Community Settings. In her role at Hope High, Dana will bring her knowledge and AmeriCorps experience to her position. Serving as an AmeriCorps member in the AfterZone provided Dana a conduit to PASA through her service work at Nathan Bishop Middle School. Dana says that she is "really excited to take on this next step in working with PASA and utilizing all my perspectives to make programming as successful as possible!"

Like Dana, Kaila, PASA's Expanded Learning Coordinator, is an alumna of RIC and AmeriCorps. She achieved a double major in Political Science and Public Administration, with a minor in International Non-governmental Studies. In her AmeriCorps service Kaila helped first generation youth to apply to college and obtain scholarships, and assisted families with the college application process.

Back-To-School Drive for School Year 2022-2023

Thanks to the generosity of Brown Rudnick LLP, a steadfast PASA supporter, we have a flood of backpacks and school supplies ready to distribute to the youth of Providence. Through our strong relationship with Brown Rudnick, we have a room full of not only backpacks, but calculators, notebooks, markers, and more. By special request of the youth, who often wait for the bus or walk to and from school in inclement weather, Brown Rudnick has included umbrellas in their school supply bounty! We are thrilled to be selected by Brown Rudnick for the donation of these vital supplies.

Pictured are just a few of the school supplies made possible by Brown Rudnick,
