THE BEST VALUE FRENCH GRENACHE IN AUSTRALIA!
''It's another insane value from Domaine Lafage.''
Jeb Dunnuck

''This is all about wonderfully pure, concentrated fruit, showing Grenache off in its finest light.''
Jamie Goode, The Wine Anorak

"This Estate has been on fire, producing gorgeous wines."
Wine Advocate Magazine
Hi Folks, this is new to Australia.  It's from the winery considered to offer among the best value in France and today we have an outstanding, well reviewed old vine Grenache.

It's the Domaine Lafage 'Nicolas' Vieilles Vignes de Grenache 2019 and it's just $34.95.
It's off 65 year old vines in Languedoc-Roussillon and I can tell you, you'll never see a Rhone producer release a wine this good and price it anywhere near today's offer.   The quality-to-price-ratio is outstanding
But don't just take my word, Jamie Goode of The Wine Anorak wrote:

''Domaine Lafage produce a quality line of wines that offers insight into the diversity of the Languedoc-Roussillon, using local varieties. The wines offer character and personality, and also excellent value for money.'' Jamie Goode

This 2019 Old Vines Grenache has a great concentration of ripe red and dark fruits, spice and savoury notes, soft tannins and very long finish.  And its good to know that we're not the only ones that have been impressed by the 2019, check out the captivating reviews below.
"The 2019 Old Vines Grenache has a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices and peppery garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness. It’s another insane value from Domaine Lafage.'' 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck ''Enticing and fresh with sweet cherry and berry fruit with notes of pepper and herbs, this shows great concentration but also finesse. It’s more red fruits than black, with some structure and a fine green hint that adds brightness, and no noticeable oak. This is all about wonderfully pure, concentrated fruit, showing Grenache off in its finest light. So supple.'' 93 Points, Jamie Goode, The Wine Anorak "An old-vines Grenache with a tender nose of fresh red fruits and a delicious mouthfeel, spicy on the finish.'' Guide Hachette des Vins (France) “I’m impressed with the Languedoc - Roussillon collection of Domaine Lafage they're very well made and well priced.'' Andrew Jefford, Decanter Magazine

"once again delivers a delicious and exceptionally well-priced bottling"

"both serious and playful, food-friendly and highly drinkable."
Christina Pickard. Wine Enthusiast

'This historic Hawke's Bay estate once again delivers a delicious and exceptionally well-priced bottling. A blend of three subregions, including the famed Gimblett Gravels, this ruby red Syrah sings with vibrant plum and berry fruit, cracked black pepper, graphite, dried florals and chocolate mint. Aromas flow seamlessly onto the palate, which threads finely structured tannins through the juicy fruit, herbs and spice, emerging out the other side to form a complete wine that is both serious and playful, food-friendly and highly drinkable. Drink now and over the next several years."  Rating 95 Points.  Christina Pickard. Wine Enthusiast

Holm Oak Pinot Noir 2021

96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

"Holm Oak has always been a reliable source of well priced Tasmanian Pinot Noir"
 Angus Hughson.  The Wine Pilot.

"A magic carpet of seven clones (in separate blocks) were picked between March 20 and April 16. All batches were destemmed and hand in small open fermenters, matured for 10 months in French oak (20% new). The colour is a massive come-on, deep in pinot terms, and the palate duly delivers, spicy tannins running through the black cherry and plum fruit in an even, lingering stream”  96 Points & Special Value Wine. James Halliday.

"Holm Oak has always been a reliable source of well priced Tasmanian Pinot Noir made with fruit grown near the banks of the Tamar River. Winemaker Bec Duffy crafts wines that appeal thanks to their finesse and delicacy rather than sheer power."  Angus Hughson.  The Wine Pilot.

Vinea Marson Grazia 2018

"Seamless and concentrated, it’s a perfect example of the layered character that can be achieved by blending grape varieties...the price is a gift"  Huon Hooke
"This outstanding wine is a kind of ‘super Friulian’ blend, a mixture of pinot bianco, friulano, malvasia d’Istria and picolit. It has a medium to full yellow colour and an extremely complex bouquet of nuts, spices and various fruit aromas skillfully entwined with barrel-fermented characteristics. A little positive bottle-age is the icing on top. In the mouth, it’s very rich and multi-layered, the finish long-lasting, cleansingly dry and satisfying. Seamless and concentrated, it’s a perfect example of the layered character that can be achieved by blending grape varieties, adding a patina of winemaking inputs. And the price is a gift." Vinea Marson Sangiovese 2016

" An Italian-Australian's glorious ode to sangiovese."  Jeni Port, Wine Companion,
"Crushed, cold maceration for 7 days, inoculation and natural fermentation, 10% of juice was saigneed, fermentation and maceration over 30-40 days, maturation in French barriques (20% new) for 12 months, fined, filtered. An astonishing number of 13 clones employed, which bring an extraordinary degree of complexity and savouriness to the finished wine. Feel the sun and the earth, the black cherries, charcuterie, leather and earth. Sour cherry, cherry pip resonates on the palate which is taut, savoury and wild. An Italian-Australian's glorious ode to sangiovese." Drink by 2032.  95 points.  Jeni Port.  James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

Vinea Marson Nebbiolo 2016

"At six years old the tannins offer solid structure without dominating"  Nicole Bilson.  Wine Pilot.

"Glistening garnet highlights in the glass hint at the age but there’s still so much freshness – red plums, macerated strawberries, and compressed watermelon make up the fruit spectrum. There’s the ethereal aroma of pressed rose petals, and the earthiness of roasted beetroot and leather. It is rich with a lovely ripe-fruited weight, and mouthfilling spice. At six years old the tannins offer solid structure without dominating, fleshed out with baked rhubarb, an ironstone minerality, and meat jus umami. I drank this with a rich mushroom ragu pasta and the only thing I would change is to add some truffles on top.  Rating: 95 Points. Nicole Bilson.  Wine Pilot.

Ashton Hills Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir 2021

"A strong, firm, exciting young pinot. $40"  Jeni Port
"This is in lovely form."  Campbell Mattinson

"94 Points. Fermented with 30% whole bunches, matured in French oak for 9 months. In the dark and brooding class of pinot, with undergrowth, autumnal leaves, dark berries, woodsy spices and sage. The amount of whole bunches has been decreased from 2020, a good sign, bringing an element of added complexity rather than sharpness. A strong, firm, exciting young pinot. $40. 13.5% alc. Drink by: 2028. Screw cap" Jeni Port, winecompanion.com.au.

"With a pedigree dating back over four decades, Ashton Hills has a well deserved reputation for its cool-climate Adelaide Hills pinots noir -and a change of regime has not diminished quality. The fruit for this appealing young wine was taken from six different blocks in the cool Piccadilly Valley and is just lovely. Think juicy, red-fruited goodness with some softness and style on the finish. I’d pair this with Chinese roast duck - a classic combo for excellent dining." Winsor Dobbin, Winsor's Choice.

"93 Points. This is in lovely form. It tastes spicy and it feels well structured but the fruit is ripe and juicy. Cranberry into boysenberry and red cherry, florals and woodsy spice. It’s fairly light on its feet but it has enough insistence to make its quality clear. Oak, gently smoked, is so very well played here, so neatly tucked. It’s well played all around."   Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Bleasdale Vineyards Tempranillo 2021
Top Gold - 2021 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show
Made from a single parcel offered by a grower; destemmed, whole-berry fermentation, 2-day cold soak and 5-day fermentation, pressed to tank and used French puncheons for 5 months. Low SO2. The colour is bright through to the rim. A enticing bouquet of some complexity, with a red cherry and chocolate mix, the palate light–medium bodied with a positive texture and structure, all derived from fruit.  Rating: 93 Points.  James Halliday.  Halliday Wine Companion.

Bleasdale Wellington Road GSM 2020
Top Gold - 2021 Royal Adelaide Wine Show
Crimson red wine with cherry and blackberry fruits supported by nutmeg, spice, white pepper and some savoury, earthy characters. A generous, opulent palate built around a core of finely textured tannins. A delicious drink in its youth, however this wine can be cellared for a number of years for those that have the patience and enjoy more savoury secondary characters.

Bleasdale Vineyards Cabernet Franc 2021
Top Gold - 2021 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show
Bleasdale has been using cabernet franc in blends for over 25 years, but the ’21 vintage demanded this should be bottled as a 100% varietal. Destemmed for whole-berry open fermentation, pressed at 4 baumé, matured in used French puncheons and tank for 5 months. Low SO2 usage. Magenta-crimson hue, brilliant clarity. High-toned bursts of raspberries and flowers lead the way into a light-bodied, delicious wine that demands immediate consumption. Rating: 92 Points. James Halliday.  Halliday Wine Companion.

''A medium-bodied, elegant red with raspberries, dried cranberries, tobacco and orange peel. Silky, ultra fine tannins. Delightful and refined finish.'' 93 Points, James Suckling

''Wild rose, red woodland berry, graphite and Mediterranean herb aromas mingle together in this elegant red.  The lithe, savory palate combines finesse and racy tension that surround juicy strawberry, sour cherry, star anise and cinnamon before a flinty close.'' 93 Points, Editor's Choice, Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast Magazine

''Smells of rose hips. Elegant, slightly smoky, touch of tobacco leaf, the texture of chamois leather. Orange peel and rose petals infused in pomegranate juice. Tannins as delicate as paper-thin panes of stained glass. Just beautiful. Perfect in its dawn-spider-web of delicacy, light, tension, translucency.'' Tamlyn Currin,  JancisRobinson.com

''Mount Etna's terroir is rocky and mineral rich. These soils are fashioned from the succession of eruptions dating back millennia. What has made the red wines of Etna so appealing is their similarity in some ways to Pinot Noir and Burgundy. The tannins are quite silky and aromas of strawberry and cherry call to mind Pinot Noir.'' Joseph Micallef & Tom Hyland, Forbes.com

Varvaglione Puglia Reds 3 Pack!
The highly respected Varvaglione Vigne e Vini estate from Puglia is one of the oldest and most awarded family run Southern Italian wineries.  We bring into the limelight 3 of the best wines Varvaglione Puglia produces.  With the consistent quality produced by Varvaglione right across their range and their consistent awards,  it was a challenging task to narrow it down to 3 select wines, but we did, with the Primitivo and the Negroamaro and of course we couldn't leave out their flagship, the mighty Papale Primitivo di Manduria, a great wine with 4 x Gold Medals and acknowledged by Luca Maroni as one of his favourite Reds from his 2020 edition of his Italian wine guide with one of his most inspired reviews I've ever seen.
Varvaglione Dodici e Mezzo Primitivo del Salento 2020
''A great value Primitivo del Salento from the Puglia wine region produced by the Varvaglione family. Look for ripe plum, cherry compote, dark chocolate and vanilla flavours on the palate in the smooth red.'' Natalie Maclean

Varvaglione Vigne e Vini Linea Oro 'Papale' Primitivo Di Manduria 2017
"The features of its most sumptuous consistency are first and foremost in the dense depth of its tint, in the opaque strength of its intense colour. Therefore, in the thickness and wealth of the perfume: successive levels of the overlapping flesh of berries, fused with strands of minty spice that hint at medicinal liniments, yet with deep notes of forest fruit. If the sense of smell is resinous, the touch is real cream. Cassis jam, made plump and pulpy from the tannin. And if the dosage of spices and the oenological sharpness of transformation give the complexity the balanced radiance of the whole, the last sign of its thick density is the unwillingness of its most soothing and minty fruit echoes to vanish. Among the best Italian reds of the year."  97 Points, Luca Maroni, Annuario Del Migliori Vini Italiani Awards 2020

Varvaglione Dodici e Mezzo Negroamaro del Salento 2020

Domaine de la Bongran Viré-Clessé Cuvée E. J. Thevenet 2017

“The Cuvée E.J. Thevenet, which ranks as one of Burgundy's greatest wines"
  William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

This is superb - a Viré-Clessé with genuine substance and longevity.   Neal Martin, Vinous.com

“...The Cuvée E.J. Thevenet, which ranks as one of Burgundy's greatest wines. What's more, its longevity is legendary: even in challenging vintages such as 1984, the Thevenets' humble Mâcon is still cruising along in the cellar, while most of the Côte de Beaune's grandest whites are already senescent” - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (click here to see full review)

The 2017 Viré-Clessé, which will be bottled at the beginning of 2022, has a killer nose with an almost Germanic feel, intense nectarine, melon and damp earthy scents with just a hint of petrol. The palate is beautifully balanced with a line of acidity keeping everything taut and linear. The 2017 is a little waxy in texture with orange rind, stem ginger and white pepper furnishing the very persistent finish. "A succulent, delicious and classy red of strong regional character. A delight."  Mike Bennie.
"Rich, savoury red of medium weight, fine grip and general sense of vitality. Redolent of dark berries, char and pot pourri with faint game meat notes wafting around. The palate is brighter than expected from that sweet earthy hit of perfume, lifted on blood orange acidity and cinched with a web of fine and firming, feathery tannins. It’s deeply flavoured yet filigreed and fresh. A succulent, delicious and classy red of strong regional character. A delight." Rated : 95 Points.  Mike Bennie.  The Wine Front.

Philippe Bouchard Beaujolais Gamay 2019
''2019 is probably the most consistently exciting vintage for Beaujolais since 1976. Renowned for classic lively acidity and vibrant aromas with lots of floral, spice and licorice notes.'' James Suckling
If you want a low cost risk free entry to Beaujolais, I'm sure it does not get any better than this.  There's a thing about great vintages - that wines from the top of the class to the most inexpensive are inevitably good and this rings true with Philippe Bouchard Beaujolais Gamay 2019.

And 2019 was one of the great Beaujolais vintages.  James Suckling wrote: ''2019 is probably the most consistently exciting vintage for Beaujolais since 1976. Renowned for classic lively acidity and vibrant aromas with lots of floral, spice and licorice notes.''

Rusted on Cloudwine folk may have noticed real and proper Beaujolais has been a big thing in the industry this year.  But we've never in 20 years offered a Beaujolais for less than $18.  Not many retailers have.  I'll say now, this is not a $40 Beaujolais, but boy do you get a whole lot of juicy Beaujolais, especially after a 2 hour decant.

Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir 2020

"Destemmed fruit off the South Leongatha vineyard and some from Leongatha, wild fermented, left 14 days on skins then pressed off to French oak (63% new). A best-barrel selection. It's a sterling wine. Incredibly savoury with charcuterie, dried herbs and wafts of earth and autumn leaves with the oak both etched into and bolstering the palate. Fuller bodied but not weighty. This feels quite effortless, as the plush tannins and refreshing acidity work towards a lingering, very long finish. Quite a beauty."  97 Points. Jane Faulkner. Halliday Wine Companion

"Medium to deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is rich and intense smoky dark-cherry aromas, which leads into a gorgeously flavoured and balanced palate of intensity and supple texture, the tannins of the highest quality. The fruit sweetness in the mid-palate is delicious, the silky texture persisting right to the end of the last aftertaste. There's a wonderful elegance about it." Bass Phillip 'Estate' Pinot Noir 2020

Beautifully expressive red and dark berry fruits with a brambly undergrowth and complexing black tea notes. A very pure expression of Pinot Noir. The palate is just perfection...sweet, lush, sweet berry. Lovely fine tannins holding it all together and flavours echoing the nose that crescendo to the finish.

"Medium to deep red/purple hue, an excellent colour for a two-year-old Aussie pinot, the bouquet irresistibly attractive, with 'forest floor' and sappy overtones to dark-cherry fruit intertwined with smoky oak resulting in a complex smoked-charcuterie touch. The wine is medium-bodied at most, softly textured—even glossy—in the mouth, the tannins quite smooth but with the faintest gritty, bitter aspect in the aftertaste. A very smart pinot."  Rating: 93 Points.  Huon Hooke.  The Real Review.

Medium-bodied, nutty and spicy, particularly good feel to the tannin here with a slate and Turkish coffee feel, all that healthy silty stuff, anyway, dried flowers, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel, and cool fine acidity, all the grip and perfume on a long finish. "No doubt it’s Chardonnay, but has a certain Italianate quality to it, which I really like, kind of like a good Timorasso! So lovely."  Gary Walsh.
"Over the years, I seem to vary the capital letters in the name of this producer. Anyway, older oak, three barrels produced, one of them went through malo. It’s from a vineyard in the Upper Yarra, not the home turf.   Melon, a little nougat, white peach, subtle fennel  perfume and spiced top notes. It’s soft and flavoursome, almond meal, a lovely glycerol glide, but fresh in acidity too, a slight grapefruit bitterness, fine chalky texture, with lime and slightly tropical flavours on a long firm finish. "So purple. So vital. Grilled meat, spicy, blueberry and fresh blackberry, violet perfume. Medium-bodied, savoury, meaty and spicy, but pure of intense black fruit – blackcurrant, raspberry,  sage, succulent, yet tight. "Deep crimson. Classical blackcurrant cedar aromas with lifted espresso, roasted chestnut notes. Inky deep and beautifully concentrated wine with dense blackcurrant, dark plum, dark chocolate flavours, fine grainy/chocolaty tannins and perfectly integrated cedar oak. A superb grainy firm finish and mineral length. A great Leeuwin Estate Cabernet. The foundation vineyard of Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet is the 1975-planted Block 8. The vineyard is meticulously managed to promote the development of high intensity fruit and fine classical grainy tannins. Although the growing season and maritime climate are similar to Bordeaux, the atmospheric conditions, lateritic soils, Karri forests and bush-garrigue bring a very different and highly particular set of challenges." Rating 99 Points.  Andrew Caillard MW

"One of the last wines released from the great 2018 Margaret River vintage, this has to be one of the finest cabernets yet from Leeuwin. Supremely balanced and poised with stylish lines through to a very long finish. Scented aromas of cedar and leafy blackcurrant with a trace of oyster shell. The palate is quite brilliant with the distinct chalky tannins and super fine grained oak holding the fruit gently to its extended finish. Great wine here. Rating: 97 Points; Ray Jordan. Wine Pilot

"Leeuwin Estate is for me one of the most Bordeaux like of Margaret River's top line cabernets. Aromas of red currant, blackcurrant, woody asparagus stems, cedar and cassis with a solid backbone of new oak. There is then great density of fruit to the palate, again not bold but reserved and full of energy; a young, tight ball of vibrant, stylish and youthful flavours exceptionally well balanced with manicured tannins which support an incredibly long, elegant finish. Super impressive and a new benchmark for this label. " Rating: 97 Points.   Angus Hughson.

"seriously good-value pricing." Stuart Knox

"79/21% cabernet sauvignon and shiraz; small open fermenters; wild yeast; 2-week ferment; matured for 10 months in French oak (10% new). This is all about cabernet sauvignon kicking up its heels in the Barossa Valley and making no apologies for doing so. There is an edge of authority to its expression provided by the firm tannins, shiraz ending any suggestion of excess force. Bargain on a grand scale."  94 Points.  James Halliday Wine Companion

"Sourced from old, dry-grown vines in Blewitt Springs; hand-picked, wild yeast fermented and basket-pressed before a brief stay in used French oak. Neither fined nor filtered; gloriously spicy red fruits create the same magic as young, high-quality pinot noir. Truly delectable."  Rating: 96 Points. James Halliday. "‍Extraordinary value here"
Mike Bennie

"Packs a lot of flavour intensity into its medium-bodied frame"
Jeni Port
"‍Extraordinary value here, it seems. A wine packed with depth of fruit, savouriness, peppery spice and a malty-woody seasoning underpinning it all, with bouquet and palate in synch with these characters. Depth and grunt are two good words, but it never forgets a sense of lively pinosity, too. Is there something old school about the wine? Sure, and it also delivers satisfaction in spades.  Mike Bennie.  Gourmet Traveller Wine

"It’s made from vines planted in 1980 and 1987 in the Concongella vineyard, and from 1997 plantings in the vineyard at Rhymney.  Despite its asking price this Pinot Noir will drink at its best after a few extra years in bottle. The flavours sit back in the palate, not so eager or in a hurry to please. Given time to breathe though there is yet good drinking to be had now: its cherried fruit comes earth-strewn and macerated, its beet-like flavours laced with woodsy/smoky herb and oak notes. It’s varietal, it’s well balanced and made, it feels settled and composed, with perfectly-judged tannin drawing back through the finish. At $25 I’m firmly of the opinion that this is fantastic value."  Campbell Mattinson

"Packs a lot of flavour intensity into its medium-bodied frame, together with a strong Aussie bush signature. Delightfully aromatic aromas in dark cherry, pomegranate, rhubarb, bay leaf and violet. Gentle oak spice on the palate introduces a detailed, deeply flavoured and creamy palate wrapped in close-knit tannins. A good pinot is a rare beast in these parts and one to be enjoyed".  Jeni Port.  The Wine Companion.

Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2020

"Close your eyes, and this shiraz will give you a magic carpet ride to the upper reaches of the Rhone Valley"
97 points. James Halliday

"An elegant and stylish shiraz."  Huon Hooke.

"A wine of towering richness and complexity, black cherries, licorice, black pepper. Close your eyes, and this shiraz will give you a magic carpet ride to the upper reaches of the Rhone Valley. Most remarkable is the freshness of the wine, and the dark spices of a night time drink. 14% alc, screwcap 97 points, drink to 2040."  James Halliday, The Weekend Australian.

"Deep red with tints of purple and a sweetly jammy blackberry and squishy mulberry aroma, plus a slight meaty overtone. The wine is lean and sinewy on the tongue with tense tannins, a trace of bitterness, and is medium bodied with moderate length. There's a Rhône-ish note to the nose. An elegant and stylish shiraz." 92 points.  Huon Hooke - The Real Review

Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2021

"This is a polished release"
Campbell Mattinson

"Already a seriously complex pinot"  97 points
 James Halliday

"Already a seriously complex pinot, high-strung aromas of spice and forest floor providing the parameters of a palate that builds intensity as it moves from red and blue fruits towards the triumphant peacock’s tail finish. 13.5% alc, screwcap 97 points, drink to 2031."  James Halliday, The Weekend Australian.

"Love the tannin structure of this wine. It feels both perfumed and inlaid with fruit, but more impressively it sheets across the wine in a wide spread, integrated and balanced while at the same time being assertive. It gives the wine a bit of class, not that it lacked it in the first place. This is a polished release, with varietal red berries fruit flavours splashed with earth, chicory and dry spice. It’s ultra primary now, as you’d expect, but it feels settled, and so it’s already drinking well. Fruit and the formation of tannin here though are its main quality markers. 93+ Points. Campbell Mattinson.   The Wine Front

"super vintage for one of the country’s most consistently concise and high quality Chardonnay wines."  Andrew Graham

"Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, fermented and matured in French oak. Its crystal clear quartz-green hue signals the ’21 vintage in all its glory, the bouquet and palate a seamless array of nectarine, grapefruit and cashew. The feel and flow of the aftertaste implore a second glass. 13% alc, screwcap 97 points, drink to 2030."  James Halliday, The Weekend Australian.

“Its impeccable self. Flavours of pear and quartz, nectarine and cedar, a gentle floral element, a subtle lactose note. It feels powerful, taut and refined at once. This is not a smack-you-in-the-eyes chardonnay and yet its quality and intensity are clear. As with many of the finest Australian chardonnays now, this will need a year or three from release to start showing its best self.”  95 Points Campbell Mattinson, Winefront

"Released too early, which is the only blight. Otherwise, this is another super vintage for one of the country’s most consistently concise and high quality Chardonnay wines. Sliced white peach, a lemon cordial acidity thing, then acidity that is mouthwatering. Clay powder oak, lemon citrus. Power. Very firm. Very classic. It feels graceful if pre-pubescent, and that’s the only thing sliding it from top gold to just gold. Come back next year for the full kit and kaboodle of flavours as this is an A1 vintage. It just needs patience."  Andrew Graham.  The Real Review.

Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021

"A wine of real gravitas and presence."
95 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

"This is a beauty."
 94+ points, Campbell Mattinson

“Batches of pinot noir from different blocks, wild fermented with 20% whole bunches. Matured 10 months in French hogsheads (25% new). A wine of real gravitas and presence, the '21 reflects a most impressive year. Abundant, enticing aromas in pristine red fruits, maritime herbs, humus and dusty beets. The palate fairly bristles in fruit freshness and energy, the tannins pricking the tastebuds and laying the foundation for a long life. Oak? Yes, it's evident in the texture and the binding but totally integrated.”  95 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

“Bannockburn has never really been out of form but I get the feeling that winemaker Matt Holmes and team have the ship about where they want it to be, now. This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There’s a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it’s most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver.”  94+ points, Campbell Mattinson, WineFront

Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

"True to the Bannockburn style which offers both power and finesse."
95 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

"This is an excellent release; it’s good for drinking now but it has many years up its sleeve.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson

“Whole-bunch pressed, fermented wild in French hogsheads and puncheons (20% new), 10 months on lees, partial mlf. True to the Bannockburn style which offers both power and finesse. The former is set in structure and solid in body. The latter is all about a world of marvellous fruit and oak flavours: mandarin skin, nectarine, white peach, buttered toast, almond bread, quince paste. It's dense, lifted by a citrusy acidity that is just so cleansing, so right.”  95 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

“Grown on a range of vineyards across the Bannockburn holdings, from 1976 plantings through to the most recent (2016). 20% new oak, with 70% of the final wine going through malo. Bannockburn chardonnay is never short of flavour and so to this release, though the fresh zing of the finish brings a more modern twist, arguably. Pear, grapefruit, peach, cracked wheat and cedar flavours come strong and convincing, aided by citrus and fennel notes, the latter especially notable on the finish. The flavour of tinned pear here is as strong as it is delicious, it must be noted. This is an excellent release; it’s good for drinking now but it has many years up its sleeve.”  94 points, Campbell Mattinson, WineFront

Mayford Tempranillo 2019

"This is a very serious example of Australian tempranillo"
Angus Hughson.

"This wine is definitely heading in the direction of super-complexity."
Jeni Port.

Trophy  – Best Tempranillo
Winewise Small Vignerons Awards 2021

"Winemaker Eleana Anderson is among a handful of leading tempranillo producers in this country forging ahead with the grape. This is a smart tempranillo, delivering a fine-grained elegance. Ripe, dark fruits lead by black cherry envelope the senses. Red licorice, violets and herbs add a fragrant touch on the palate, nicely entwined by savoury tannins. This wine is definitely heading in the direction of super-complexity. Keep it ageing a little longer, if you can."  95 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

"There’s plenty of bold flavour here though there’s a firm undertow of tannin and it feels seamless throughout. In fact overall integration here, particularly of oak and fruit, is excellent. Coffee, cola, black cherry, sweet herbs and roasted meat notes. It feels up-front and generous at first but then the finish trails out beautifully."  94 points, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front

"Mayford have over the last decade risen up and are now considered one of the leading producers of tempranillo in the country, while at the same time also helping the Alpine Valleys region to build a name for itself with alternative grape varieties. Attention to detail is high with 14 parcels of fruit handpicked over 18 days, which is a hell of a lot for what is a small production wine, with some whole bunches also used in the ferment. It has produced quite an unusual style of Australian tempranillo, almost sangiovese like with its combination of bright acidity and firm tannins. It’s embryonic and would up tight with fleshy dark berry fruits plus a dusting of tobacco and stalky spice. It’s so juicy, but also muscular with deep set tannins and balanced but visible oak helping to drive a long, acid driven finish. This is a very serious example of Australian tempranillo built for the long term. But if you want to drink it young, make sure you match it up with slow cooked lamb shanks."  Angus Hughson.  The Wine Pilot

"has a power of aroma and a spectacular allure. Supreme.'' 97 Points
Luca Maroni, Annual Italian Wine Guide

''No Italian white boasts and reveals an aromatic integrity as crystalline as that of a glass of Tenuta Ulisse Terre di Chieti Pecorino. The varietal aromas stand out with a clearness and a fragrance that make them absolutely shine.  With their native perfumes displaying aromatic results that excite the senses. This is a wine of maximum value: the dense grape, perfectly ripe and clear as in nature, has a power of aroma and a spectacular allure. Supreme.'' 97 Points, Luca Maroni, Annual Italian Wine Guide

''Pecorino is beautifully balanced by fine acidity and complex minerality making it a prime candidate for age-worthy wines. But the other beautiful thing about Pecorino is its character, noticeable terroir, a rich flavor profile; soft fruits, florals, dry herb, minerality, all balanced by freshening acidity. Put simply, Pecorino is tremendous bang-for-your-buck.'' Emily Bell, Vinepair.com

Plus 7 Gold Medals

Let me introduce you to San Marzano Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria 2017Luca Maroni's Best Italian Wine from the 2021 edition of his Italian Wine Guide (Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani).  Luca Maroni is Italy's answer to James Halliday.  He tastes more and rates more wine than any other person in Italy.  This is a big deal.

Should it come as no surprise?  San Marzano is one of our favourite Italian producers I'd say Italy's most awarded producer.  Just this year, Gambero Rosso, Italy's most respected food and wine magazine, have awarded San Marzano as their Italian Co-operative of the Year for 2022.

In addition to Luca Maroni's 99/100 rating, this wine also received Gambero Rosso's highest possible rating (3 glasses) as well as receiving 7 gold medals (including 2 double golds) at international wine shows across Europe, Asia and closer to home in New Zealand.

Moss Wood Cabernet Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

99 points - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
98 points -Sam Kim, WineOrbit.com
96 points- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

"96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice-daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar."  99 pts - Ken Gargett., Wine Pilot.

"Gracefully powerful and exquisitely expressed, the wine shows blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedary oak, green olive and warm spice aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers outstanding fruit purity and intensity, combined with finely textured mouthfeel and beautifully pitched grainy tannins, finishing with a great line and length. Impeccably detailed, precise and undeniably classy."   Rating: 98 Points.  Sam Kim. WineOrbit.com

This needs a swirl or two, it's a little shy from the outset. Then suddenly a whirl of roses, black plums and subtle sweet baking spices emerge. The fruit is poised and wonderfully fresh and there's a graceful air to the palate. It flows across the palate with some pleasing amaro tannins guiding the way. This is an elegant cabernet with a fine yet youthful structure. Its full-bodied warming core has years ahead of it.  96 points.   Bob Campbell.  The Real Review.

"Generally, contrary to many, I tend to favour 2019 Margaret Cabernet over 2018. I bit more brooding, dense, tight, ‘minerally’, and all that.  Powerful, compact, brooding sort of style, but tight too, all black fruit, dark chocolate, a seasoning of bay leaf and baking spice, some floral notes peeping over the top. Tannin is earthy and dense, but smooth and layered, boysenberry and dark raspberry, firm acidity set neatly inside, and a tobacco and black olive savoury finish of length and intensity. A very strong release, indeed maybe the best in the last decade. High drinkability, even early."  Rated : 96 Points.  Drink : 2027 - 2043+.  Gary Walsh. The Wine Front.

La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir 2019

"La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir is one of the most popular wines in the world."
Scott Butterfield

"La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir is one of the most popular wines in the world. It’s been instrumental in creating a market for this grape that eventually overtook Cabernet in the marketplace. Such a monumental shift took place, in part, through crafting single-vineyard wines with impeccable fruit. Although headquartered in the Russian River Valley, La Crema has a major presence in vineyards up and down the Sonoma Coast. And there’s enough soil variety here to rival all of France.

Monterey is Pinot Noir’s dreamland, planted on south facing slopes of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The grapes here, on average, enjoy an extra forty-five to sixty days of development on the vine compared to other northern viticultural areas. Its distinctive physical geography, which includes cooling fog and natural wind tunnels, gives it one of the longest growing seasons in the world."  https://halleckvineyard.com/la-crema-monterey-pinot-noir-review/

"All very nice." Gary Walsh.

"I saw the new Domenica wines being offered in an EDM from the distributor (World Wine Estates) so I hit them up for some samples. A very good producer in my opinion.  A discreet style of Chardonnay here, with everything set to sotto voce. I minor amount of matchstick, ripe grapefruit and white peach, a little nutty, a light application of spicy ginger oak. Subtle chalky texture, a little spice and citrus, but again somewhat nutty and saline, with a zesty finish of good length. All very nice." Rating: 94 Points.  Gary Walsh.  The Wine Front.

"Nebbiolo is a wonderful grape variety for rosato, and I often wish more producers from Piedmont would make one, though I ask and they kind of say, to paraphrase “Nebbiolo is for red wine, we have white wine for drinking if you want something lighter or cooler (you idiot).”

Such balance, wonderful fine powdery texture, a little floral and aniseed perfume, red cherry and blood orange, fresh acidity but softness in the mouth, with a long faintly spicy finish. This is outstanding. Yum." Rating: 95 Points.  Gary Walsh.

"It’s looking like a good vintage in many places. Fine bones, but with flavour. Strawberry, raspberry, some spice and dried rose perfume. Medium-bodied, crisp and bright, has a bit of a sap and semi-dried tomato flavour in the mix, fine chalky tannin, and a finish of good definition and solid length. Still pretty young as at now, and I suspect it has more to offer. Lovely."  Gary Walsh.  The Wine Front.

Oakridge Vineyard Series Henk Chardonnay 2020

"It has all the line and length you could wish for."
Campbell Mattinson

“From a single vineyard in Woori Yallock, from 2008 plantings of 95 clone.  Hand picked and whole-bunch pressed to puncheons for maturation and fermentation.  A bright green gold, this is immediately engaging and open with its aromas of white peach, white flowers and preserved lemons.  With its superb purity of fruit, I love the way the acidity cuts through the wine, giving it backbone and length.  All the 2020 Vineyard Series chardonnays are subtle variations on a theme, with the Henk being my pick today.  They all completely over-deliver for the price, too.”  97 points, Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

"This is a piercing release with green pineapple, cedar, oatmeal and lime flavours bursting through the palate.  Indeed it’s a wine that just seems to go on and on.  It’s lean and daring but it has enough flavour to carry it and then there’s that finish, which is impressive to say the least.  What this wine needs is time, to flesh out.  It has all the line and length you could wish for."  93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

“A similar feel or DNA to the Light Dry Red and you know what that means?  It's a delicious drink.  Full of bright, juicy cherries and pips, laced with woodsy spices and a dash of Angostura bitters.  Smoky and sultry, too. Just shy of full bodied, textural and plush, with slightly grainy tannins. Lively and fresh.  Get into this now.”  94 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

"This is a $30 Pinot Noir with quality written all over it.  It’s drinking beautifully right now and there’s nothing really to suggest that it won’t maintain the charm offensive for a good few years. It feels both dry and polished, savoury and sour, but it’s the swish, ripe, red berried fruit and the seamless integration of smoky oak that has it feeling both certain and seductive.  It’s an A Grade Drink Now Pinot Noir, with the attributes to hold and mature."  93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The WineFront

"Youthful and bright in the glass. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, sap, spice and dried herbs.  Fresh and bright in flavour, cherry, redcurrant, woodsy, spice and brambly.  The tannins shape the wine and the acidity is crunchy and gives plenty of freshness and drive."  92 points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review

"Arguably a little serious for this list and the finish is a bit drying, but it’s also very drinkable.  It’s the mezzanine level Pinot for Oakridge, after the Over The Shoulder entry point, but the lines are classic Yarra Valley Pinot.  Generous, sappy, and full of red fruit, the mid-palate chugs along with great raspberry plum generosity, then with a firmer-than-expected tannin handshake to finish.  That red fruit core is pretty handsome for this price.  Definitely recommended."  92 points, Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2021

"Delicious right out of the gate, this medium-bodied and refreshing wine will age well too."  Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

"Red fruit, spice, a little pepper, something of a blood orange/ Campari character too."  Gary Walsh, WineFront

"A very bright, light–medium crimson red.  A gentle waft of fresh raspberries and cranberries, with just the right amount of spice-rack spices.  Delicious right out of the gate, this medium-bodied and refreshing wine will age well too.  The perfect introduction to modern Yarra pinot."  96pts, Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

"Red fruit, spice, a little pepper, something of a blood orange/Campari character too. It’s slightly sappy, red cherry and spiced strawberry, again that blood orange flavour and some savoury ‘autumnal’ character. Tannin has light emery grip, and the finish is juicy/sweet/sour and slightly bitter, offering solid length. Good drink. Better again with a little more time in bottle."  93pts, Gary Walsh, WineFront

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021

"Flavour, crunch, gloss, and all up a Chardonnay of fine balance and appeal"   Gary Walsh, WineFront

2021 was a terrific vintage for both vineyard quality and quantity, a wet spring followed by a healthy amount of sunshine and some well timed rain in January, leading to large green healthy canopies.  The overall temperature during the growing season was lower than average which led to a long slow ripening period and great concentration of flavours and natural acidity.

"A blend of Sexton, Tarraford, Applejack, Primavera and Wombat Creek vineyards. 15% new oak (puncheons). About 10% malo.  Flavour, crunch, gloss, and all up a Chardonnay of fine balance and appeal. White peach, almond, a little fennel and lime, fine acidity, flinty texture, a cool cucumber thing happening, and clean, with a well-defined finish of excellent length. Very good in 2021."  94pts, Gary Walsh, WineFront

Luca Maroni - Annuario Italiani Awards 2021

Old school Chardonnay lovers, here is your drink. This is a blend of  80% Chardonnay, 15% Moscatello Selvatico, 5% Fiano.  It spent 4 months in oak, which is just enough to give it that old world charm without the harshness so many producers released in the 80's.  This unqiue blend also has unique fully-ripened peach and floral aromatics, which are interwoven with delightful hints of freshly squeezed lime, mint and herbal complexity. Beautifully balanced, the rounded palate is beautifully styled and will be enjoyed by many chardonnay drinkers.

Here it is, our very popular Aussie Oaked Chardonnay 6-Pack, updated with a mixture of new chardonnays together with annual favourites.  This is a 6-pack for Chardonnay drinkers containing chardonnays people want to drink, not the unoaked, "natural" wines that stuffy sommeliers offer at restaurants.  For me, each wine in this 6-pack has everything a chardonnay should have - they all ooze creaminess that smooths the middle palate; have an oak influence that while present, doesn't overpower and displays a fresh dose of fruit that makes you think this is a chardonnay, but a darn good one.

Furthermore, this 6-pack explores regions and styles and is a great introduction the wonderful world of oaked chardonnay.  This 6-pack contains the following wines:

Mount Macleod Gippsland Chardonnay 2021
Trevelen Farm Great Southern Chardonnay 2021
Beechworth Estates Chardonnay 2019
Bellvale Gippsland Chardonnay 2019
La Curio Suffragette McLaren Vale Chardonnay 2021

Pitchfork Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2018

"A very appealing, fruit-driven young cabernet at a great price" The Real Review - Huon Hooke

"Outstanding, dazzling, stellar value for money. Don't walk past it"  Rating: 92 Points. Erin Larkin

"Sourced from several vineyards within Wilyabrup. The brilliant 2018 vintage has produced this juicy, spicy and bouncy little number. Outstanding, dazzling, stellar value for money. Don't walk past it."  Rating: 92 Points.  Erin Larkin. James Halliday Wine Companion

"Medium to deep red colour with a tint of purple. The aromas are flowers and violets, cassis and blueberry, a suggestion of leafiness, the palate bright and fresh with lively mouth-feel and great vitality. The fruit is rich, ripe and sweet in the middle,  possibly due in part to a touch of residual sugar. It has intensity and persistence. The tannins are fine but assertive. The finish is very refreshing. A very appealing, fruit-driven young cabernet at a great price." The Real Review - Huon Hooke.

Tahbilk '1927 Vines" Marsanne 2014

"Moreish and mouth-watering...so delicious"  Mike Bennie

“A benchmark, of course, here from 2014. Matured gracefully. Tart and tangy acidity is a strong feature, so too the soft, mellow like texture around it. Lemon balm and curd, green apple, grapefruit pulp and a general sense of talc-chalk minerally character. Moreish and mouth-watering here, fresh yet in an early stage of maturity. So delicious. 94 Points” Mike Bennie.  www.winefront.com.au

"Stylistically akin to the best Hunter Semillon, this Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne 2014 is a fascinating piece.  Sourced from a patch of Marsanne vines that dates back to 1927 (who knew!) it’s even built in a Hunter Semillon mode – early picked fruit, cool fermentation, released with some bottle age. The Tahbilk soil types are sandy loams too – it’s all meant to be.

At six years old, this is just entering its peak drinking window. Waxy, lanolin edged palate combines understated, gently honey edges, with pithy, grapefruit and apple through the middle, the finish lightly toasty and gently powerful. That last part is important – it’s much firmer, deeper and more powerful than you realise, almost chewy. That whisper of Marsanne honeysuckle is the counterpoint to the acidity too. It all adds up to pleasure and charisma that will be delivered for decades. I’m a big fan.

Best drinking: honestly I’d wait until early next year and then drink over the next ten years plus. 18.5/20, 94/100. 11%, $46.30. Tahbilk website. Would I buy it? Yes. A bargain given the easy cellarability."  Andrew Graham.  Oz Wine Review

“Light yellow colour, with a herbal, wet cement, straw-like, dried lemon-peel bouquet that is youthful for its years and yet to develop much toastiness. A hint of fresh quince. The palate is delicate, refined and intense, tightly wound and yet smooth and soft, with balanced acidity and lovely flavour, not austere as these wines can be but possessing plenty of drinkability. In typical form, it’s very like a middle-aged Hunter Semillon in the traditional early-picked style.” Huon Hooke. The Real Review

Tellurian Pastiche Shiraz 2019

Trophy - Best Shiraz - Heathcote Wine Show 2020
Trophy - Best Young Shiraz - Heathcote Wine Show 2020
Trophy - Best Single Vineyard Wine - Heathcote Wine Show 2020

In addition to winning 3 trophies at the recent Heathcote Wine Show, what I also really like about this wine is its pedigree.  Tellurian are a family owned, certified organic vineyard & winery, intent on crafting solely 100% Heathcote wines.  They have previously won Best Shiraz at the Heathcote Wine Show for their Redline Shiraz.  They also like to keep their prices in check, you don't need to pay $100 a bottle like some more established Heathcote producers from the region will ask you for.

We'll avoid advertising the likes of whom this wine out-performed in order to receive these awards (I've received feedback they don't like this published), however we will talk about price because it's rare to see a Heathcote shiraz priced under $30.  This Tellurian Pastiche Shiraz is excellent value and we all like value.

"Yet another classy red from Tellurian. The plum, mulberry and spice characteristics have considerable appeal, as do the savoury tannins."

Those words above are from a Winewise Magazine tasting and they're spot on.   This is a richer style of wine, just like Heathcote is famous for and Cloudwine "best in Australia" price of $26.99 means you can stock up.
