Hello everyone -
I can't enter this month without thinking of
"September Morn", Yeah, maybe I'm a romantic.
I'm also a big Neil Diamond fan for those who don't know. I've seen him in concert at least three times but those were all ages ago. He's had to stop touring for health reasons, and I really regret I didn't see him his last concert in Austin in 2015. Thank you Neil for all of the songs forever ingrained in our hearts.

We love to cultivate community, and with that, we are happy to share we have another
Friend In Music feature this month. This month's friend is
Anaïs Mitchell. I first saw Anaïs at the Kerrville New Folk competition back in 2003. I've followed her career ever since and have always loved any chance of running into her and/or seeing her perform. She even played SXSF in 2007! Everyone in our folk family was so happy to hear Anaïs's "folk opera" project,
Hadestown, was going to be on Broadway in 2019, she had been working on it for so long. Months before it even opened, I remember telling my 14 year old theater niece something like "Oh yeah, this folk friend of mine wrote a play awhile back and it's actually opening on Broadway next year and I'm sure you probably don't know it but..." My niece interrupted, "
Is it Hadestown?" I already knew Anaïs was a star, but, wow, my niece and her theater friends knowing about her work took it to a whole other level. Hadestown is still on Broadway and Broadway on Tour. As the touring production will be in Austin this month (we will be taking my niece of course), I asked Anaïs if she might share a little bit about touring again after Hadestown. And now, from the desk of Anaïs:
Hey ComboPlate friends! I’m Anaïs, a longtime friend of Laura and many of the incredible artists on her roster! She asked if I’d write a little note to y’all so here I am— typing with my thumbs from the back of a sprinter van headed from England to Ireland by ferry today.
It’s wild to be out here again, playing, traveling, criss-crossing paths with other artists in the mystical ways that happens. Just played two festivals in a row that were returning after a three-year hiatus. Everyone seems to be re-learning how to do things. Everything and nothing is the same, and I know that’s true for every single one of us since the pandemic.
For me it’s especially rare to be out because my touring life got upended for a number of years while I worked on a musical called Hadestown, which finally landed on Broadway and is now touring through Austin! It’s a story from Greek mythology of love and resilience and it has a recurring line “we’re gonna sing it again”. And we are, we are.

Hadestown Broadway On Tour will be in Austin, San Antonio and Tulsa this month. Next month is Houston, Oklahoma City, St Louis... and so more dates all over through 2023. Winner of 8 Tonys and
so much more. Sixteen years in the making, go see this beautiful creation if you can.
