Directors Message

It seems like ages since I’ve written one of these pieces, and as usual there has been a lot happening across the Centre.  We do our best to ensure that all this activity is captured for posterity in the newsletter.

August is the start of semester two and that means a huge extra load on all our academic staff as well as the many research students who provide critical support for tutorials and pracs.  I have been quite consumed with teaching the Introduction to Robotics unit, including some redesign to give the students some exposure to a physical robot.

I’d like to use this opportunity for a special farewell to Steve Martin, who I have worked with for a  very long time.  I first met Steve in 2009 when I was still at CSIRO (but in the process of leaving) and he was a QUT undergraduate doing his capstone project with the CSIRO robotics lab. In 2010 I came to QUT and Steve signed up as my first PhD student here.  He also provided great feedback on what was needed in a mechantronics/robotics curriculum, and this helped us design the current EGB339 and EGB439 units.  Steve spent a year or two working in Canberra, finished his PhD and joined us as a research engineer.  Along the way I’ve worked with him on some truly out there projects: Kinect sensors to check how well people wash their hands, a massive RobotWars event at Southbank as part of ICRA, testing a cheap and cheerful ventilator on anaesthetized pigs and most recently on a proposal for robots in space.  I’m thankful for all Steve’s contributions, they’ve help make this lab the powerhouse that it is, and I wish him all the best for his next gig.

Enjoy the issue.

Peter

Siganto Foundation Medal

Congratulations to Dr Doug Morrison who was awarded the 2022 Siganto Foundation Medal at Graduation.

The Siganto Foundation Medal was established by the late Dr Bill Siganto AM and his wife Dr Marie Siganto AM, to recognise excellence in early career research and to support outstanding QUT Doctor of Philosophy graduates in engineering disciplines.

Dr Doug Morrison’s thesis title “Robotic Grasping in Unstructured and Dynamic Environments” received a $10,000 award to allow him to undertake multidisciplinary professional development, and local and international research activities.

Doug is currently working at Amazon in Berlin and was unable to be present, but his parents accepted the award.

Behind the Scenes

… with Dimity Miller

What do you do in the Centre and what are you currently working on?
I am a chief investigator with the Centre. Two things I'm excited to be exploring at the moment -- how class imbalance affects object detection performance metrics, and how large language models can be used in object detection.

What’s on your desk?
Too many things... a coffee cup, tea mug, headphones, laptop, pistachios, printed papers, green hippo, orange robot... the list goes on.

How would you describe your work to a child?
I help robots see, and try to make them smarter and safer.

Three words to describe your work.
Fun, fascinating, fast-moving

What’s your dream travel destination?
I'd really love to visit Iceland

Please finish these sentences:

I'm currently reading:
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (not yet finished, but strongly recommend!)

And currently wishing
that I'll have good weather for my upcoming holiday

My last meal would be
chocolate pudding

Final question!  Tea, coffee or no caffeine?
Tea AND coffee!

Who do you nominate for next month?

Helen Carson 🙂
