'Ka tangi te pīpīwharauroa ko ngā karere o Mahuru'

With the arrival of spring that brings the longer days and warmer months, this time of year is about new growth and beginnings. Its also a time to become active whether that is preparing and planting your garden, getting out into the environment and walking our many tracks or spending time at the moana.

The Te Kāhui team in turn are actively preparing for our upcoming Hui-ā-Tau (AGM) on Saturday the 15th of October at Parihaka. This is always a busy time preparing the Annual Report, but really it's about reflecting on our last year and celebrating what we have achieved.

We look forward to hosting you at the pā, and while we will ensure we complete the formalities of a Hui-ā-Tau, we also look forward to being together which will include providing activities for our tamariki.

SHARE YOUR TE REO MĀORI EXPERIENCE AND MEMORIES!
This year Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori invites you, your whānau and the community to record and share your stories of te reo Māori.  The battle for te reo Māori has been fought by generations of people, from our smallest towns to our biggest cities. On our televisions, in our schools, homes, in our sports and culture clubs and workplaces. These stories need to be told and saved for future generations.

The 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Māori Language Petition is on 14 September this year.  Hana Te Hemara was a founding member of Ngā Tamatoa.  In 1972, with other members of Ngā Tamatoa (The Young Warriors), Victoria University’s Te Reo Māori Society and Te Huinga Rangatahi she presented the Māori Language Petition to Parliament calling for te reo to be taught in schools.

The determined efforts of those language champions who organised the petition, and the 33,000 New Zealanders who signed it, marked a turning point for te reo Māori which was critically endangered and remains at risk to this day.

2022 marks an extraordinary year of te reo milestones and anniversaries:
  • 50 years since the Māori Language Petition was presented to parliament,
  • 50 years since the first national kapa haka competition was held (now known as Te Matatini),
  • 40 years since the first kōhanga reo opened,
  • 40 years since Te Karere, the first te reo news programme aired,
  • 35 years since te reo Māori became an official language of Aotearoa, and
  • 35 years since Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori opened our doors for the first time.
2022 is also a year of new beginnings as we celebrated our first Matariki public holiday in June and join the United Nations to launch the International Decade for Indigenous Languages.

The struggle for the survival of te reo Māori will be told on the Stories of te Reo website (launching soon!). It is the first time a timeline of this sort has charted the pivotal moments in the assaults on and revitalisation of our indigenous language. We know the timeline only tells part of the story; we need your help to complete it.  So, we are inviting all New Zealanders to share their stories, their memories and the actions they have and are taking to ensure its survival as a unique part of our national identity.

Share your story your way!
At your next whānau, family, hapū, iwi or community group gathering, consider organising a wānanga to share and record your te reo memories and experiences for future generations. This ensures they know and understand the journey.

Tell your story or share a memory in whatever way you choose: videos or whakaahua (photos) from the past; video and/or oral recordings/interviews with your whānau;  waiata; kōrero tairitenga (stories, plays, poems); mahi toi (art, craft) or even a letter to your mokopuna/tūpuna.  You may want to do something on social media instead, like on TikTok or a written post. Your story is yours to tell in whatever format you choose.

ReoMāori.co.nz
Our site www.reomaori.co.nz hosts photos, videos and written records of Māori language moments and activities. You can create your own or your group’s (whānau, family, hapū or iwi) profile and connect to any group to share it with your community.

Social media
You can share your story on your own social media for friends and whānau to see or hear.
  • You can share your story on your hapū or iwi social media or website
  • You can publicly share your story and hashtag #reomāori to be featured on Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori social media channels
  • You can share it with your community or groups you belong to for them to post and share it.
