🌳 Fines for illegal tree work in Glenfield

Glenfield tree works

Fines totalling £5,880 have been given to both a tree specialist and a landowner for illegal work to a mature ash tree in Glenfield protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

Arboriculturist Mr Lee Ward of Mountsorrel undertook extensive work on the tree under the instruction of Mr Paul Powell at Steyning Crescent, Glenfield, despite being protected by a Tree Preservation Order since 1990 along with other trees in the area.

As a result of the severity of these illegal works, and the condition that the tree had been left in (which can be seen with the picture above), the Council prosecuted both Mr Ward and Mr Powell. At Leicester Magistrates’ Court on 29 June 2022 and 24 August 2022 both were fined for their involvement in the works.

Mr Ward, who undertook the works without consent, was ordered to pay a fine of £1,600, with £980 in costs and a victim surcharge of £160. Mr Powell, who instructed the works without consent, was ordered to pay a fine of £1,360, with £1,620 in costs and a victim surcharge of £160.

⚖️ Date set for Blaby planning appeal

Sycamore Street appeal

An appeal hearing for an application we refused in Blaby in May 2020 will take place later this month.

The hearing against the application on land off Sycamore Street will be held on 22-23 September 2022 at the Council’s offices in Narborough.

Following the appeal hearing, the Planning Inspectorate will either agree with the Council’s refusal and ‘dismiss’ the appeal or disagree with the decision and ‘allow’ the appeal, which will grant planning permission.

More information is available in a Fact Sheet using the link below.

🧶 Yarn Bomb enters its last days!

Cosby Yarn Bomb
Have you been to see the Cosby Yarn Bomb yet? Time is running out to see this year's edition!

Once again volunteers have outdone themselves with incredible displays across the whole village and their 'Make a Splash' theme.

You still have a chance to see the incredible and colourful sea themed displays, as well as a few surprises! Our Visit Blaby team have also sponsored one of the displays, this fantastic 'Al-ask-a-Salmon' installation you can see above.

The display will start to come down on Monday (05 Sept) so this weekend is your last chance! You can find more pictures of what you can see, as well as more details about visiting the village using the link below to visit their Facebook page.

Everyone at Blaby District Council would like to congratulate the group for their amazing efforts, and for ensuring Cosby remains a popular tourist destination for so many people.

🤝 Agreement reached to transfer park

We are delighted to say that that an agreement in principle has been reached with Enderby Parish Council to transfer the ownership of Southey Close Recreation Ground.

Southey Close Recreation Ground, known locally as Wimpey Park, is a former landfill site and popular open space with a football pitch and playground. The agreement, subject to approval by Blaby District and Enderby Parish Councillors, will see the Parish Council own and maintain the site to be used as open space forever more.

As part of the agreement both councils committed to ensuring the whole site will remain an open space and that no development will ever take place.

Blaby Ice House
We thought you might enjoy this classic picture of the historic ice house in Blaby, which was taken in 1995.

You might remember reading and seeing the work we undertook in the last year to restore the ice house back to its former glory, along with our archaeological dig on Bouskell Park, where the ice house sits.

The history of both the park and the ice house is fantastic, and we're giving you the chance to take a look round and experience the ice house and park for yourself on one of our tours.

📍 Young people can make their voice heard

Blaby district Youth Council logo
We're looking for members for our Youth Council and Youth Green Forum!

Our Youth Council meets monthly and gives young people the chance to discuss issues close to their heart, engage with our councillors and to make a difference within the local community. This year, our Youth Council has chosen to focus on hate crime and vaping.

The Youth Green Forum is a newer group, with current members working on the agenda for the next year. Green Forum members meet monthly and give young people a voice to talk about and act on their concerns about climate change and our environment.

Interested in joining? Know someone who might want to be a part of our Youth Council or Youth Green Forum? Anyone can join up to the age of 19! Benefits of joining include:
  • Valuable skills and experiences for the future
  • Certificates of achievement to add to a CV
  • Volunteer hours that can be used towards Duke of Edinburgh or other accreditations
  • Getting an insight and active role in local democracy
If you would like to join either (or both!) of these groups, or you would like any more information, please email our team using the link below.
