Dear <<First Name>>

Message from our CEO

Welcome to the September newsletter.

I do hope you’ve all had a lovely summer and enjoyed some time away from work. This is normally a quieter period at FNF, but these past few weeks we’ve been as busy as ever.

I do hope you have all managed to enjoy this summer and have taken some well earned time off work.

Usually August is a quieter month for the FNF but not this year, we continue to work hard to ensure we plan and deliver leadership development opportunities for hundreds of nurses and midwives across the UK. The FNF Board of Directors has approved a new 5-year strategy and we are just in the final phase of consultation before we launch the plan in September.

Autumn is the time in the year when we open for scholarship applications. Already we have received many and we are delighted to see outstanding nurses and midwives make the decision to apply for this career enhancing and personal development opportunity.  If you’re considering applying for a scholarship, or you have mentored a colleague to apply, please don’t delay, applications close on 21st October.

To celebrate the successes of our 2021/22 scholars we are planning our annual FNF Scholars Conference that will take place at our offices in London on 13 October. It’s a great day for all scholars, sponsors and mentors and of course the FNF Team that has worked behind the scenes to support the scholarship journey. Without our sponsors and mentors these opportunities would not be possible, we are so very grateful for your support.

To ensure FNF’s incredible work is shared as widely as possible we are working with a fantastic agency to shape our marketing and communications.

 Yours,
Professor Greta Westwood CBE

Nightingale Frontline

Thanks to the Garfield Weston Foundation, throughout September we are able to offer Nightingale Frontline sessions free of charge to all nurses and midwives.

The Nightingale Frontline Leadership support service provides a psychologically safe space for individuals to explore professional and personal challenges. Since the service launched in April 2020, we have supported over 3,000 individuals working in all areas of health, social and voluntary care across the UK.

Mandeep Lally, a junior sister shares her incredibly poignant and moving memoir about her experiences of being a nurse leader during the Covid-19 pandemic. She discusses the need for Clinical Supervision and provision of safe spaces for well-being and retention. #FNFLEJOG2022

On behalf of the whole FNF family, we want to say massive congratulations and a big well done to Major Mike Collins and the team on their fundraising journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG). They left Land’s End on 13 August, the 112th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s death, and reached John O’Groats on 26 August. The aim was to raise money for the FNF to fund a scholar; ‘The Scholars Scholarship’. A selfless idea of the 2021 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Scholarship, who are looking to leave a legacy and pay it forward.

In this video, Mike Collins explains the reasons, motivations, planning and much more that led to FNF LEJOG 2022, and you can see all the posts from their journey by following Mike Collins on Twitter.

Let’s raise money for our #FNFScholars, every little will make a massive difference to a #FutureScholar. You can donate here.

Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives (IENM) Online Leadership Programme

We are very excited that in September we will be opening the applications for an innovative online leadership programme for IENM working in the UK.

The challenges of migrating and building a career as a nurse or midwife in the UK are well documented. This programme is funded by the Burdett Trust and has been developed in close collaboration with IENM partners and subject experts. It will give up to 1000 IENMs the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities and boost their career prospects, benefiting both them and the services they work within. All who complete the programme will become FNF alumni and join our growing community of excellent nurse and midwife leaders.

The Foundation already supports International Nursing and Midwifery Associations in the UK to offer pastoral support and career development to their members. With the launch of this programme, we are taking the next big step in helping our IENM colleagues in the UK to thrive.

Look out for the applications opening and spread the word!

Wound Care

Professional Record Standards Body (PSRB) have been commissioned to develop an information standard for wound care to support the adoption of best practices in wound care. The focus is on wound care for lower limb, leg and foot wounds, pressure ulcers and surgical wounds. It includes assessment, management, maintenance, and prevention. It is UK-wide and applies across all health and care settings.

To support the development of the standard we are holding three multidisciplinary workshops throughout September. Details of the workshops and registration links are below. Please do share details of this consultation within your networks.

06/09/2022 - Wound Care standard consultation: Pressure Ulcers

08/09/2022 - Wound care standard consultation: Surgical Wounds

14/09/2022 - Wound care standard consultation: Lower Limb (lower limb, leg, and foot)
