Every week, every month, I think, "I really need to write an update. There is so much to share, so much to pray about." And so much to do that I don't get to it!  Alas, I'm on another trip so will be captive on a long flight, and really need your prayers.
  God's Word Came with Power
In February we began a new project up in the mountains, in 5 languages. Not one verse of God's Word in any of them, but a small growing fellowship of believers in each of them. Jivan was a new believer in the Kanach language. He zealously threw himself into the task of crafting oral Bible stories in his language, for his tribe of several thousand people eking out a living from the terraced slopes. For several years he had repeatedly shared with his parents and grandparents about his new faith in Jesus, but they had rejected him. But he had always used the national language to share, because that is how he had learned about Jesus. But now he was learning some of the key stories of the Bible in his own language, and sharing them to anyone who would listen. And his family was listening. Intently.
Then Jivan's grandfather got very sick. The witch doctor's incantations and treatments only made him worse. So he asked Jivan to pray to God for him. Jivan prayed in Jesus' name and his grandfather was gloriosly healed! And then the really good stuff happened.  That very night his grandfather had a dream in which a man with brilliant white hair, beard and robe appeared before him and reached out and gently touched his chin and lifted his face to look him in the eye. In the morning he joyously told Jivan, "the almighty God himself has taken away my shame and restored my honor!" Because to "lift my head high" (Psalm 3:3) touches to the very core of Kanach culture. And now Jivan's grandfather (who happens also to be a chief in his village) and whole family have decided to follow Jesus.
Below: a story crafting workshop where teams from 5 languages learn to tell 3 new Bible stories.
  Looking Back
  • The most time intensive part of my role is working with partner organizations to develop new projects, trying to ensure that they are well designed, to achieve impact and life transformation, not just to complete translation goals, and to try to make sure that the capacity exists to do what they are aiming to do. It involves lots of questions, lots of waiting while the partner works with their team to make adjustments. And then come the budgets to support the plans. Praise the Lord for 4 new projects approved and started for 12 languages since April.
  • A fun side job lately has been reviewing the typesetting of the full Bible in Branchu, looking for anything that doesn't look right before it goes to the printers.
  Looking Ahead
For your prayers, here is a blow by blow of what I hope to be doing in the next ten days--thanks for praying:
  • Today, before most of you will read this, I'm in Helsinki working with the director of a Russian Bible translation organization that is doing translation in 25 languages in the region. I'll be training him and his team in a project management software for BT.
  • Thursday afternoon US time I land in Delhi to begin a whirlwind ten days. Please pray for God's favor at immigration and that I'd be able to enter into the country, as I've had some visa uncertainties in the past.
  • Friday-Saturday I lead two new translation teams who are using a new experimental translation adaptation software, evaluating how its been going and training them in best practice. Pray for wisdom to know if we should proceed with this software or shift (and train them) to a different tool.
  • Sunday I'll be meeting with a partner to work on details for an OT project for 6 languages that have just finished their NTs. Then Monday-Tuesday I'll be with a group of Seed Company leaders who will be visiting this partner to learn more about their strategy and vision.
  • Wednesday is a travel day and then Thursday I'll be leading a group of project leaders from two organizations in a refresher training for a project management software tool.
  • Friday and Saturday are more partner visits with the Seed Compnay team and then working on a project plan and proposal for a new project.
  Family Update
  • Caleb and Amanda just celebrated their 1st anniversary and are in the process of buying a house in Newberg where Amanda has accepted a job with Young Life.
  • Luke has just finished a stint working for North Face in Denver and is back to freelancing while he maps out next steps. I just had a fabulous 4 day stopver hanging with him in Chamonix, France where he's doing some photography jobs.
  • Josh has recently moved to San Francisco to work from his company's headquarters. We enjoyed having him home for a bit of July while he made the transition.

Thanks for standing with us, and with the Bibleless,

Jeff (and for LB and the boys)
