Portishead Big Clean 27th - 28th August
Slade Road Woodland Play Area and Playing field used to be part of Slade Road Primary school. Portishead Town Council (PTC) now owns the Play Area which directly borders the Playing Field land which is owned by North Somerset Council (NSC). The results of a recent PTC public consultation asked for both the Play Area and Playing field land to be retained as public amenity land, with a woodland recreation area and possible forest school area on the Woodland Play Are site. PTC is now in the process of engaging suppliers to re-create the woodland amenity and to put a long-term environmental management plan in place.

Turn The Tide have offered our help to get it free of litter. Our next Portishead Big Clean is weekend of 27/28th August, and we’d like your help in the Slade Road Woodland. We would love you to join us - just turn up when you can over the weekend. How amazing if it was all litter free by Sunday afternoon!

Please remember to take sensible precautions - wear gloves, use a litter picker if possible, don't reach into areas if you cannot see clearly in case of broken or sharp objects. Should you find any needles, please contact a Turn The Tide volunteer (orange Hi-vis jackets); but if none around at the time, please report to North Somerset Council Connect online.

PTC will be arranging for Glendale to collect bagged waste on Monday morning so please leave any securely bagged waste in an accessible area if you are unable to take home for disposal.

Happy birthday to us
September marks 5th birthday for Turn The Tide Portishead
We have booked The Windmill for Sunday 11th September from 12 to 2 pm. There will be an invite on Facebook so that we can have a good idea on numbers. Reaching 5 years is a great milestone for us so do join us in celebrating!
North Somerset Community Lottery
We have signed up as part of the North Somerset Community Lottery. Every £1 spent generates 50p for TTT, 10p to general fund for all groups, and 40p for prizes and admin fees. We will be promoting this as much as we can via social media and posters. If you sign up before end of August you go into draw for £1,000 of Curry’s vouchers. We are receiving a small monthly income from this, and so far Coral has won 6 free entry tickets!
Colourful plastic
This is a call out to those doing beach cleans. We want to make a display board highlighting the effects of ocean litter, and so would ask that you might collect any colourful plastic items that you find on beach cleans (not general street litter picks) so that we can use them to make the display board. I will put out a container for these on my driveway (36 Hillcrest Road BS20 8HP) labelled 'TTT Plastic' for you to drop off, or Penny (chair@turnthetideportishead.co.uk) can collect if that is easier. Thank you to those who have already dropped off some colourful bits and pieces.
HiVis jackets
Any volunteers who do not have a Hi Vis jacket, please email chair@turnthetideportishead.co.uk and we will arrange to deliver one to you. If you have a Hi-vis jacket (especially the orange ones) that you are not using, please return so that we can pass on to other volunteers thank you.
Portishead Big Clean 24th and 25th September
This coincides with Severn Estuary Big Beach Clean “Spruce Up The Severn” and we are going to invite Portishead to join us for a community beach clean. It would be great if we could have ALL 7 of Portishead beaches cleaned over the weekend.
Turn The Tide Portishead/Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Below is a press release sent to Local Reach for the October issue

"Since July 2020 Turn The Tide, a local beach cleaning / litter picking group, has mentored Gordano School students volunteering for Duke of Edinburgh medals.
We have completed assessments for 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 40 Bronze awards.
Students have spent 675 hours collecting 325 bin bags of litter from 62 local spaces and the 7 Portishead beaches.
They have joined us to improve our local environment whilst gaining valuable knowledge about the damage litter, especially single use plastic, does to our waterways and wildlife."
