David Deacon-Joyner is a pianist, composer, arranger, lecturer, and educator, and owner of DDJ Music Services. He has over thirty years experience as professor of jazz studies at the University of North Texas and Pacific Lutheran University and has adjudicated at jazz festivals all over the United States. He has performed all over the world and has composed and/or arranged music for symphony orchestras and jazz big bands throughout the United States, including collaborations with saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band) and Caleb Chapman (president of the Jazz Education Network). His textbook, American Popular Music (McGraw-Hill/Cengage, 3rd ed.) has been in print since 1993 and he has just completed a biography of rock ‘n’ roll founding father Bill Haley. Locally, David performs regularly with Puget Sound area musicians, including his own Tacoma-based Grit City Jazz Octet.
