Update on Paw Paw Tunnel Detour and Temporary Shuttle

Contractors deployed by the C&O Canal National Historical Park to remove eroding rock material from the closed eastern portal of the Paw Paw Tunnel will begin hauling away scaled material using Tunnel Hill Trail -- the current detour for thru-travelers during the existing eastern portal closure. Beginning around August 24, the contractor will provide a temporary shuttle service between the intersection of the towpath and Tunnel Hill Trail to the intersection of Tunnel Hill Trail and Tunnel Hill Road. This shuttle is intended to run roughly 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, every 30 minutes, through late October. Outside of these hours, the normal detour will be re-opened. Click for more information directly from the National Park Service, which can field your questions.

Count Your Cards at the Labor Day Poker Run

Bring your family and friends to participate in the 29th Annual Labor Day Poker Run, sponsored by the Westmoreland Yough Trail Council. Bicyclists and walkers will leave from West Newton to collect playing cards at checkpoints along the Great Allegheny Passage. The best hand among several categories at the end of the event wins a prize! Raffles and a 50/50 drawing complete this day of fundraising to help volunteers maintain, preserve and enhance the GAP in Westmoreland County. Register here.

Register Your Team for the One-of-a-Kind GAP Relay

Gather a ragtag group of your friends to tackle a fun overnight running relay on the Great Allegheny Passage this October 14 and 15, from Cumberland to Pittsburgh's South Side.  Supported from end to end by P3R and sponsored by UPMC Health Plan, this baton-handing event features 24 staffed checkpoints, prizes, and a party at the finish line.  A 40-mile adventure option on Saturday is perfect for those seeking a shorter event.  Register for the GAP Relay today!  Proceeds benefit volunteer maintenance and the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy.
