Daytime humidity will be over 60% with early mornings and afternoons above 70%.

Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page with satellite images and live weather feeds.

The Storm

Empalme, San Jose and Guaymas experienced severe flooding after this week’s rains. El Valiente bridge, just north of San Carlos, collapsed and there was no traffic able to pass between Guaymas and Hermosillo (pictured below left). There is now one-way traffic in each direction and repair work has begun on the bridge (pictured below right). Flooded roads also closed the road to Obregon, but traffic is again moving in that direction too. Expect traffic to be slower in the effected areas.

Arroyos in San Carlos were full and running fast, sweeping a desert full of dust and debris into the sea.

According to everyone's favorite weather wonk, PJ Schramel, in San Carlos, the Ranchitos area got the most rain at around 3 inches. Marina Real area had around 1.6 inches. All other areas got less than an inch.

Help those effected by the floods

The rains over the past few days have been devastating for many. Neighboring cities, San Jose and Empalme, were completely flooded, with people losing everything in their homes. Clothing. Furniture. Food. Essentials required to live day by day. Guaymas also saw its share of flooding, and the water coming from the mountains effected San Carlos as well. Life was lost. Livestock was lost. It was a harrowing few days. And as we wake to sunshine (thankfully!), our community is needed to step up and help those less fortunate.

The communities have banded together to help and several businesses set themselves up as collection centers for supplies needed by the hardest hit. Several relief efforts are underway. La Calaca, El Mar Restaurant, La Palapa Griega, and Maukaa Restaurants are collecting monetary donations and/or essentials which they will give to those in need.

 * Bottled water
 * Non-perishable food
 * Basic necessities such as diapers, sanitary towels and disinfectants
 * Clothing
 * Footwear
 * Pillows
 * Personal hygiene and cleaning supplies
 * Furniture
 * Pet food

You can bring your goods to La Calaca, El Mar, La Palapa Griega or Maukaa Restaurants, or you can make a donation via PayPal at: greghovey@hotmail.com and he will do the shopping for you. 100% of the funds collected will go towards the relief efforts. Greg and Elizabeth own the Dragon Fruit farm and they are generously collecting monetary donations to help the families in need and displaced by the floods in San Jose and Empalme.

The damage from these rains is reminiscent of Hurricane Jimena in 2009, for those of us who lived through that. Similar to then, the help is needed desperately and immediately! Thank you.

Fishing Report
I don't think that many boats were out last week. My boat tried Sunday morning after the storm and struck out. I did hear one report of some football sized tuna earlier in the week, even though they claimed they were 20 pounds, 16 - 20 miles out. It is that time of year, so good to hear that they are around. It looked like the waters stayed relatively cool, so we'll see if anyone heads out this week.

The photo is of my friend from Hawaii, who after nearly thirty years of trolling out there, finally got his fish. His buddy on the rod wore out, and my friend ended up handling the fish in. Many charter boats out there go trips without a fish, so sometimes it's just about the experience. We usually have pretty good fishing here, but nothing is guaranteed. Sometimes the wait makes that big moment even more fantastic.

We enjoyed some decent fishing at Steamboat Lake at 9,000 feet. I tangled with some trout to 7 pounds at North Delaney Lake. I thought that I had 'the one', but after twenty minutes I saw that I had it hooked in the dorsal fin. There were still a few biting trout on the Yampa tailwater, but they've had a lot of pressure lately. Off to the Aspen Valley area this week and then making our way west. I'll appreciate the light rains and sunny skies after seeing the photos and San Carlos weather this last week.

New Pickleball Courts Coming Soon - please help

You can help us build a beautiful 14 court pickleball facility here in sunny San Carlos.

The San Carlos Pickleball Association is building a world-class 14-court pickleball facility that will be the biggest and best pickleball complex in Latin America.

We don't have any government funding and we need your help to make this dream a reality. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Even if you don't (yet) play pickleball, this is a great Community Project and something that San Carlos can be proud of. Aside from being a place for exercise, fun and friendship and being a community hub, our goal is to be designated the Mexican National Pickleball Training Facility, supporting athletes of all generations.

We've created a GoFundMe campaignPlease donate now. Every little bit helps. Thank you in advance.

The Grand Opening will be on November 1, 2022. Hope to see you there!

Please get in touch with me (Christa Thomas) at: christa@whatsupsancarlos.com if you would like to donate a more significant amount. We have several court sponsorships and commemorative bricks of various levels that recognize the donations that went above and beyond to make this project a success. You can have your name or business name on a court or on the sponsors' wall. You can read more about it on our website.

Paid work & Volunteer Opportunities Available

Navarrete Bilingual School is looking for American / Canadian native English speakers to teach and/or volunteer at the school.

Navarrete Bilingual School (NBS) is a private school located in Guaymas. They need native English language speakers for full-time and/or part-time work for the upcoming school term for all grade levels, including: Kindergarten; Elementary; Middle School; and High School.

This is a great opportunity to become part of the Mexican culture, while sharing your English language skills with willing and eager students. Research shows that learning a second language is easiest at an early age. At NBS, starting in Kindergarten, students already begin to learn English. You can help these kids by coming in once a week and reading them a story. Or if you have more time, you can join them more often. Older students would also benefit greatly by hearing and learning English from native speakers. Bilingual people, especially in San Carlos, will receive better job opportunities to work here after their studies.

As a neighboring community to Guaymas, let’s help to make as many kids bilingual as possible.

If you are interested in volunteering or in paid employment at Navarrete Bilingual School, or for more information, please contact Mariel Llano at: marieldellano@yahoo.com.

Bliss Cochran Needs Your Help

Many of you who love animals know who Bliss Cochran is. Unfortunately she has been diagnosed with cancer and is bravely taking it on in the San Jose Hospital in Hermosillo.

She will be traveling back-and-forth between San Carlos and Hermosillo and be experiencing expenses well beyond her Social Security check.

Bliss is an incredibly supportive and active member in our community and now needs our help more than ever. You can send donations to help support her fight with cancer to her personal PayPal. If you send it as a friend/family, there will be no fees.

The email address to use for Bliss’ PayPal is: blissinger@gmail.com.

If you prefer to give her US cash or pesos donation, you can bring it to Vive Real Estate in Plaza Arrecifes (behind the ARCO gas station) and leave it in an envelope for Bliss.

Thank you San Carlos Community!
