THIS IS EDEN - FREE HISTORY TALK
FROM CASCADES TO THE STAGE
Female convict ancestry and the making of This is Eden - a talk with Emily Goddard.
The discovery of a previously unknown female convict ancestor led actor and theatre maker Emily Goddard to delve deep into the long-hidden stories of the female convicts of Van Diemen’s Land, discovering extraordinary tales of resilience and rebellion she was shocked she had never been taught about at school.
The Cascades Female Factory in Hobart detained and processed approximately 5,000 of the 25,000 female convicts transported to Australia during the transportation Era, including Emily’s great great great Grandmother.
In this talk Emily shares her research and discusses the ways her discoveries of Cascades and her own family history informed and inspired the making of This is Eden. A great accompaniment to the show, this talk is ideal for libraries, theatre groups and local history and genealogy societies.
