Sailing

Hello everyone

Not much racing at the Club last weekend, but plenty at the ORCV Winter race to Geelong with over 40 boats competing and of course Hamilton Island Race Week.  Up north, we have three boats flying the HBYC Burgee with Bruce McCracken and crew on Ikon, Eddie Mackevicius and crew on Merlion and Ray Nankervis and his HBYC Nuts Crew on Karm.  With a Lay Day today, all results to date are posted below.

Whilst those three boats are enjoying the tropical conditions, we are up to our final weekend of winter racing down here, with the last Brass Monkey Series this Saturday, with a forecast of 19 degrees and a Northeasterly of about 10 knots it is sounding like a great way to round off the season.

To finish, I just wanted to thank everyone, particularly our Race and Land Officers over the year, which without them we could not do what we do.  Thank you all.

Pre Season Boat Declaration.

As we move toward to the start of the new sailing season, please ensure you have completed all of the required declarations on our Man Overboard, Safety Audits, and Insurance to enable you to be eligible to enter club events.

Access to a short cut for that information can be found via the following link - https://hbyc.org.au/pre-season-declaration

Safety Category

As required under our Pre Season Boat Declaration (see above), please ensure your have bought you boat up to the required Safety Category for the events that you would like to enter.

Most of our races are held 'on the flats' and require Safety Category 6, but if you intend to enter either the Two-Handed Series or the John Neilson Long Distance Series, please note that these races require that the boat complies to Category 5.

If you intend to sail events such as the Port Phillip Sea Pilots Race or intend to sail home directly after a Long Distance Race in the dark you will require a 5N rating.

Weighing Day.

A weighing day will be held on Sunday 18th September 2022 from 9am at Sandringham Yacht Club for boats that wish to obtain or update their measurement rating certificates – AMS, ORCc endorsed and IRC.

The cost of the weighing will be $275 per boat.

All boats are weighed in an “empty” configuration and this means that the IRC and ORC weight is provided. The AMS weight is the empty weight plus the weight of the AMS permitted gear, which is weighed in a basket on the club crane.

 2022  September   Mon 5, Tue 6, Wed 7, Mon 12

HBYC now offers marine radio operator training. You can learn how to operate VHF if you only intend to sail in enclosed or coastal waters, or you can also be trained in the use of HF if you're more adventurous and plan some longer adventures off shore or being part of an ocean racing crew.

The course will consist of two 2.5 hour evening sessions and a written exam for VHF. Those who want to gain the HF radio qualification will also attend the above sessions but will have an additional 2.5 hour session before their exam.

Upon completion participants will receive the relevant internationally recognised qualification issued by the Australian Maritime College on behalf of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Cost:  VHF only - $195, VHF + HF - $295

Please Note

- You must be 16 or older to register

- All radio courses have a registration deadline as exams and handbooks need to be ordered

See you all on the water

A True Story worth telling - Barry Fitzgibbon

A true story worth telling.

HBYC Member Barry Fitzgibbon recently presented to the club this true story from the Gippsland History facebook page that would be of interest to many at HBYC.
Barry has for many years been involved with HBYC having first joined in 1961 to Race Secretary back in the 1980's and organiser of the 1/4 ton National Championships held in 1979. Barry was a shipwright whio started as an apprentice at Williamstown Shipyards before moving to Melbourne Shipyards. Barry also built his beloved 1/4 tonner "Great Scott" and sailed many races including the Sydney to Hobart  aboard his 36ft IMS rated "Prima Donna" and "Prime Number", a Farr 1104 which is still at the club today.  Barry also owned Le Cascadeur and sold it to the Blackstock family, who have actively been winning races at HBYC until the Blackstocks sold the boat at the end of the sailing season 2022. Barry now owns "Dorothy May" located on a mooring very close to Ferguson Pier.

With reference to the story Barry wrote "I was recently made aware of a moving story of incredible coincidence by past member Leigh Robinson that may be of interest to some as three of those in the story were past members of HBYC.  The author of the story Leigh Robinson joined HBYC after he started his Shipwright apprenticeship at Walsh's boatyard on the Maribyrnong River just downstream of the old swing bridge (later to be Shepherd Bridge) on Footscray Rd. Leigh was an active member when the old HBYC wooden clubhouse burnt down, and was involved in the construction of the new (present day) brick clubhouse.  One of the other main characters (and HBYC member) in the story was Martin Nordblom, a master shipwright who was for many years a foreman shipwright and dockmaster at the Williamstown Naval Docvkyard. I first met Martin in 1961 when I joined the club. Martin at the time was the sailing master of the prominent HBYC yacht "Seasalter". I later sailed many races with Martin on Mistral III. He was a skilful sailor and a great seaman. i believe that Martin also built (and sailed on) the yacht "Playtime" for Past Commodore Jim Lane. Another of the characters in the story was Martin's son Ruben, also a member back in the day."  Click here for the true story written by Leigh Robinson for the Gippsland History Facebook page.Barry Ftizgibbon
