Messages from the Board

This is your chance to hear directly from each board member. This section will include messages from the directors about upcoming initiatives that they are working on but also news that they want you to know about.

Treasurer Devin Campbell

Just a friendly reminder that Membership Dues were Due August 1.  If you have already paid thankyou.  If you have not paid and wish not to renew, please contact myself or the Secretary (Bevan Tomm). Please remember that as per Bylaw 2.8 "A sustaining member is in good standing unless the initiation fee has not been paid, the annual dues are more than thirty (30) days in arrears, the monthly flying account is more than thirty (30) days in arrears..."  and "[a] life member shall be considered to be in good standing if the monthly flying account is not more than thirty (30) days in arrears..."

Newsletter Devin Campbell and Warren LeGrice

This month's newsletter is going to have very little as far as board reports go.  Other than a reminder from the treasure about renewing your membership dues, this month we are focusing on stories from this years airshow.

Stories from our Member

 AirShow GA Fly-In - Story

We never know what we are going to get and have had a few unusual operations over the years. This year a text message on Friday, asking if due to the severe traffic delays did we have space Saturday to park a Eurocopter. We said we could handle it and six text messages later the plan was set.

We wanted it to not be on an airport lease and also did not want it blowing our GA aircraft nor blocking our sight lines. We considered that there was a patch of good grass between Chinook and taxiway Golf that was no mans land and met our other criteria. It worked perfectly.

Talking with the owner after shut down, I noted he was flying from the left seat, not the traditional right seat for most helicopters.  His response was that by doing so Eurocopter could fit four across the front, additional to four in the back. He said there is provision to rig a training collective but he does not. They arrived with six on board which added to our take.

Also unusual this year is we took substantially more cash then ever before and no Visa. This caused by the booking system, which would not sell tickets because considered sold out - presumably because of car parking limitations. Some pilots do not want to pay in advance in case of weather issues. Others were cars connected with our aircraft where we turned them off Queen Street and took there cash at our location. Money that otherwise the show would not get.

I got close to this airplane on my trips between aircraft parking and the clubhouse This is a Spanish built version of the ME109.

This shiny version is Rene Robertson’s latest acquisition and was proudly displayed at the general aviation ramp.

Flown in from Calgary. It belongs to Chris Tarves, a long time supporter of the AIAS.

Formerly owned by our member John Amy.

A Story from the Campground

At the campground this year the entrance had been changed from the traditional location of Queen Gate to come in from Threshold drive.  This resulted in less confusion and congestion between those coming on for the day and those who are staying over night or for the weekend.  The one disadvantage though was those who were parking the campers ended up doing a lot of walking and we all probably wore out our shoes over the weekend.  We were loved by the campers and many offered us cheers, and drinks as we walked by.  One group even started calling me "Legs" every time i walked by and would check to see if I was still smiling.  They also turned into into a game by starting a new drink every time I walked by and holding out on for me.

It is safe to say that by the end of the weekend, I was still smiling and laughing with the group and we all had a drink together and a few laughs.  While checking Facebook last week, one of our members came across this message from a camper and we wanted to share it with the rest of you. Even those post only mentioned two of us, Ledell and myself would like to extend a personal thankyou to all those who helped at Campground.  We had 33 Volunteers (a mixture of AFC and non AFC members).

Adrian's Good and Welfare

The first real Sunday morning flyout, since the start of the Pandemic almost 3 years ago that went farther than Chilliwack took place on July 24 2022, with as destination Powell River. Devin Campbell with his co pilot Feliciano Choi. Fel, as he prefers to be called, took a head start in the Kitfox around 0915 hrs. Fel has his PPL and put in his application for AFC membership. He works for Conair. Ken McKeen with co pilot Duncan Poynton took Ken’s Glastar and they took the scenic route via Pitt Lake and Mt Garibaldi park, a twenty minute detour. Ken Campbell with co pilot Bob Robertson and Adrian in the back seat took IUK out for the same destination. Take off at 0929 hrs. Follow the freeway west and climb to 2000 ft. Contact Vancouver terminal for higher. Cleared for 4500 ft. There was some concern about low sea stratus, but as we got past Sechelt, the sky opened up. Standard approach over the little lake near the airport, midfield crossing, check the wind and in this case land upwind and downhill. Perfect landing at 1026 hrs, with no backtracking required. Bob and I left right away to Julie’s Restaurant, a five minute walk from the airport to make reservations for seven people  Soon afterwards the rest of our group joined us. The restaurant is decorated with us aviators in mind, with many model planes suspended from the ceiling and numerous airplane pictures on the wall. The food and service were good. After all of us were well fed, GUFA took a head start again and all of us were airborne by 1230 hrs. Another scenic flight via Sechelt, Bowen Island and the North Shore mountains got us back in CYXX again in 59 minutes and 1.1 hrs on the tach.

All members are welcome to join us on our next flyout every Sunday Morning at 08:30. Destination to be determined then.
