Final Reminder: !Khwa ttu Orienteering

Saturday sees the last of our winter events of 2022. !Khwa ttu offers you a final chance to get out and enjoy some challenging, open, beautiful countryside. With wide open spaces, some fast running, some animals, some San history and a great restaurant for lunch - be sure not to miss this one.

Entries close this Thursday, so be sure to reserve your spot to avoid missing out!

p.s. If you are an adventure machine, and a little orienteering run isn't enough to get you out of bed, why not consider starting the day with a brand new park run outside of Darling, before getting a bite to eat in Darling or at !Khwa ttu, and finishing off with the orienteering.

COURSES:

90 or 60 minute scoring event
In contrast to regular orienteering where you navigate your way along a set course, a scoring event requires you to visit as many controls as you can within a set time limit. You plan your own route to get to whichever checkpoints you want. Each control is worth points, with the most difficult to reach worth the most points. If a control is close to the start and is easily accessible then it will be worth fewer points. If it’s a considerable distance away, it will be worth a lot more. It is important to get back before your time limit expires as there are hefty point penalties for being late. Navigation, route planning and strategy are all part of the fun in this format.

The great thing is that you make it as easy or as hard as you like. Stick to an easy route on the paths, or cut across the veld and challenge your navigational skills!

TERRAIN:
!Khwa ttu is open sandy grassland. The visibility is excellent and the running fairly fast. There are two large koppies with some rock and contour detail, but the rest of the area is relatively flat and open. There are a number of wild animals (Zebra and buck) in the reserve, and the vegetation can put on an impressive flower show if the weather conditions are right.

* Group entries include 2 maps. Team sizes range from 2 - 3 participants per team. The amount shown covers the entry for the entire team. Children under 12 are free.

FURTHER DETAILS:

There are club members on-hand to help newcomers before the start. If you've never read a map before, we'll help you get going.
Run solo or in teams of up to 3 (although children are welcome to accompany adults on the course).
Teams should stay together at all times (max 20 meters apart at all times)
Children under 12 are to be accompanied by an adult on the course. Maximum 2 children per adult.

South African Orienteering Championships

This year's SA Orienteering Championships takes place in Krugersdorp, Gauteng over the weekend of 23 - 25 September. If you are going to be in the area, or looking for a reason to get away for a bit, this weekend always offers some of the best orienteering in the country.

Note that there are always novice and non-competitive courses on offer, so don't be put off by title.

You qualify for cheaper entry fees at events (membership will pretty much have paid for itself if you compete in all 4 summer series events).
