Nature & Nutrition

Greenways' New Program for 55+ Community Members

We are now in the final few weeks of our first round of participants for our new Nature & Nutrition program, and will soon begin accepting applicants for our second group to start September 26th!

This 12-week program with limited spaces is designed to offer positive health changes from a boost in nutritious food and physical activity in a social, nature-based setting. Program participants will be part of a Vancouver Island-wide health research study. There will an informed consent document and both pre-program and post-program surveys for participants to complete

What is included in the program?

1 |   The Good Food Box: Available for purchase bi-weekly, and is full of all sorts of fresh, local fruits and veggies to boost your nutrition. *Participants will be eligible for a box at a subsidized rate upon request.

2 |   Healthy Pantry Staples: In addition to the Good Food Box, participants can choose from a list of complimentary healthy pantry staples that will give those Good Food Box veggies some good company in a well balanced meal.

3 |   Interpretive Nature Walks: Campbell River boasts some of the best outdoor experiences to be found. We will explore nature with knowledgeable guides and each other to discover the wonder that is right under our noses, while meeting some new people along the way.

Keep your eyes on our Facebook page for updates regarding how to register to be a part of the next group of participants!!

Fruit Tree Picking

Project Update

It's been a bizarre growing season for fruit trees of all kinds. We are witnessing not only delayed fruit production, but are seeing some smaller yields this year. However, if you happen to be one of the lucky few with a "fruitful" season leaving you with more than you know what to do with, we would LOVE to help you out.

Our project aims to eliminate waste, provide local fruit to local people, and reduce wildlife encounters by assisting community members with picking their extra or unwanted fruit and distributing amongst the homeowner, volunteer pickers, and local social service agencies.

To become a registered Fruit Tree Owner with Greenways, click here to fill out the form and we will be in touch!

If you are already a registered Fruit Tree Owner with Greenways and have a productive tree but need some extra pairs of hands, please email gleaning@greenwaystrust.ca

Hospital Food Forest

Becoming a WORK BEE for a good cause is that easy: Greenways' Director & founding member, Chuck DeSorcy, is inviting you to a weekly work party at the Hospital Food Forest on Tuesdays at 1pm! You'll be helping with weeding, mulching, seeding, and supporting the general garden maintenance. The food forest is located on Birch Street right next to the 'Contractor Parking' lot.
Please bring your favorite garden tools for working and gloves. Buckets, shovels, and water will be available on site. You are more than welcome to harvest if the plants are ready (using the honorable harvest guidelines).

LUSH Valley & Good Food Box partner up
Making Local Fresh Food Accessible

Greenways has recently teamed up with LUSH Valley to refresh the Strathcona Good Food Box program.
The Good Food Box is just what it sounds like: a box filled with food that is good for you – fresh fruits and veggies. Greenways chose to partner with Lush Valley for this program because they source as much food as possible from the Comox Valley and Vancouver Island. This fits with Greenways’ environmental values because local sourcing not only reduces the environmental footprint from transportation, but also helps promote our food security, supports local farmers, and strengthens the local food economy.

The new Good Food Box hosts a wide variety of fruits and veggies, and often includes eggs too!
There are now TWO sizes of boxes available: _ Large Boxes: $30 regular price
($21 subsidized) _ Small Boxes: $20 regular priced
($14 subsidized)
Subsidized Boxes are available to members of a low-income household. Limit of one subsidized Box per household please.
Visit our Strathcona Good Food Box Program: Campbell River Facebook page for ordering updates.
